I am really loving the 2nd gen Apple Pencil

    • Written by CANDACE L. S from Sterling

I found the original Apple Pencil unwieldy to use, to keep charged, and to keep track of. This second generation product works so much better for me that I find myself using it daily, and not just with drawing apps. It’s easy to charge and my Otterbox case keeps it right next to my iPad Pro where it’s easy to grab, fully charged. It’s a much better tool for sketching, drawing and painting.

    Fantastic Device - Incredibly Accurate

    • Written by Stuart R from Mortlake

I sold my original iPad and Pencil over a year ago, awaiting the new edition. I must say, it has solved all of the problems I had with the original, charging, storage, and the 120Hz screen has no notable lag for me. As good as writing on paper, and infinitely more flexible!

Usefull! To some more than others.

    • Written by Evelyn F from Toronton

I had got the apple pencil to draw digitally since it is what I enjoy and do as my hobby/free time and have been using it since November 2018. It is hands down the best stylus you can get for the iPad Pro, with its no lag, tilt, and pressure capabilities. The very handy magnet used for charging/storage has not let me down once, and my apple pencil has not fallen off. It is very useful for: digital artists (like me!), note takers in school, and even people who like photo editing, but if you are not planning to use the apple pencil for something along those lines then you may be seeing it as a "pointless accessory". Think hard about what you will be using it for and if you are not using it in daily use then think a bit more about if you are willing to spend hard earned money on something you could potentially never use. Overall a great experience when drawing no problems whatsoever.

Once used 2, wouldn’t go back to pencil 1 even for free....

    • Written by Andre V from Blackburn

Writing exeperience and encouragement to continue using is increased x5 more. Absolute unbeatable writing convenience. No more glossy, slippery feel. Now is matte that is please to hold, and has much better grip contact with skin. Ultra fast charging. Accuracy is impeccable. Double tap? To me it’s no big deal feature actually, but useful if wish to gently tap. 10/10 product.

Best sketching stylus on the market

    • Written by Woolf N from Arlington

I've used intuos and cintiq tablets (and still do) but when it comes to sketching down ideas, the apple pencil is absolutely the best. For final designs and vectoring I still go to my cintiq, but everything up until that point is on my iPad. This stylus has legitimately cut down on the turnaround time for my professional design projects.

Made a great product even better

    • Written by John M from North York

I had the original Apple Pencil with my 10.5 iPad Pro. The new 2nd gen pencil has all the great features of the original and made it even better. The new charging method is a great improvement over the original. I love how the 2nd gen pencil magnetically attaches to the top of the 11” iPad Pro. It is easy to reach for and use at anytime. The double tap feature is incredibly helpful when writing notes. I highly recommend this accessory for anyone who has a 2018 iPad Pro.

    The verdict is still out

    • Written by David G from Rochester

I will preface this by saying my opinion may change once I can get some questions answered!
My first impression is that I love the Apple Pencil 2, easy to pair, goes into low power mode when not in use. It is the best stylus I have ever used for creating artwork digitally (I actually like it more than my Wacom tablet!). I do have some questions I need to get answered before I can give it the 5 stars I want to give it. Can this device be be charged any other way besides sticking it to the iPad? OR has anyone made an iPad case/cover that will actually protect the edges, the most vulnerable part of the iPad while allowing for the Pencil to charge? The Apple Smart Folio seems to expose the edges of the iPad which is great for charging the pencil, but one accidental drop and I fear that the lovely screen will crack. I would really prefer a TPR back cover case that protects the edges but would have a section that would allow for the pencil to charge. I certainly do not want a case that has to be removed to charge the pencil. The only other change I would have liked is to have the pencil flat on 6 sides like a typical pencil.

Good tool, why no extra tip?

    • Written by Kieran G from Droitwich

Great tool, good precision. No extra tip like the previous version which is annoying because I dropped my pencil and had to get a replacement tip (some advice, don’t drop the pencil on concrete). Would have thought, at this price point, an extra tip is pittance to Apple, oh well. Magnets in the iPad hold the pencil strongly, however, one can still knock the pencil off, like I did, if given enough of a whack. The original tip that came with the product seemed to be missaligned slightly with the body where you could feel the ridge of the tip on one side and the ridge of the body on the other. Since getting a new tip this seems to have gone, I don’t know if the previous tip was manufactured wrong or the drop realigned the inside?

    5-star hardware, 3-star firmware

    • Written by Chris S from St Ives

Beautifully weighted, tactile and precise. The matte finish provides better grip than the v1.

Firmware loses one star for not offering gestures beyond the double tap, and loses another for registering phantom double-taps and switching to the eraser randomly.

Both these issues can be resolved with firmware / software updates so I hope these come in an update soon.

Overall, the combination of iPad, pencil, Paperlike screen protector and Notability is still the ultimate digital notebook in my opinion.

Nice improvement. Body is wearing thru.

    • Written by Charles S from Laguna Beach

I had the previous gen iPad pro and pencil. And this one is so much better with the magnetic mounting and wireless for charging and pairing. Have not had any issues with pencil becoming detached - stays in place for me. Sometimes I have to reattach to pair even though I just removed it.

One issue that I will bring to Appke store is the plastic body is wearing thru where the magnets are located and exposing the magnets. The exposed metal has not scratched the iPad body but I'm worried it will probably get worse.

Magnetic Charging is great, otherwise like gen 1 better

    • Written by DEAN C B from Newton

What’s the first word you think of when someone says Apple? Expensive? Possibly. Easy to use? Sometimes, but that’s three words. For me, it’s “shiny.” This pencil is not shiny at all! It feels cheap and too light. I like that it can be recharged continually in its storage position. I like that it has a flat edge so it doesn’t roll off the table into the mouths of waiting puppies. However, as stated in other reviews, this thing will fall off the ipad in your bag. For this reason (and others) I’m ditching the keyboard cover and getting the otter box cover which has a pencil-securing thingy.

The 1st Pencil was great, the 2nd is even better!

    • Written by Luca Lorenzo B from milano

I upgraded my old 1st gen Pencil when I bought the 3rd gen iPad Pro, and I really am a happy customer.
under iPadOS the lag is actually reduced to zero and it feels 90% like a real pencil. just perfect to sketch with.
the only thing I complain about is that you can’t swipe back to the home screen with it, and still have to use ur finger.

Works Flawlessly with iPad Pro, With One Minor Problem

    • Written by Paxton W from Johnstown

This product works great with my iPad Pro. It is just like using a regular pencil, but it is more intuitive and more fun to use. I also love that you can charge, store, and pair it by clicking it to the top of your iPad. It really is a genius product. The only thing I can say otherwise about the product is that it seems to make brown marks on the magnet part of it where you store it, when it’s stored. I don’t know if that is the magnet coming out of its shell, or what it is, but there are some brown marks.

Amazing ergonomics but software integration leaves a lot to be desired

    • Written by Kyle R from LOS ANGELES

Feels great in the hand but I wish you could control more with tap/swipe gestures. For example a swipe to switch between apps or control volume or the navigation bar. Also I wish there was a prompt on every app that support the pencil; I find myself not knowing what it can and can’t do.

    Good, professional level

    • Written by Mark S from Vancouver

Overall: Great product. My iPad and Pencil have virtually replaced my desktop setup and sketchbooks right now. I bring them to work, on the bus, pretty much anywhere with me. Sensitivity is on point, relatively comfortable in my hands and durable enough that I've been using pretty much every day since December 2018 and have had no functional issues or structural issues.

Criticisms: It's about the size of a regular pencil, but after using it for a while I start to wish I had some kind of ergonomic grip to it for more comfort. I guess I could technically put any kind of pencil grip on it, but something to consider for Apple.

The nib tends to start loosening after a while as I'm working. You can just tighten it again easily enough but there's a concern that if you're not paying attention, your nib could fall off. I use this every day and that hasn't happened yet because it would take some time and neglect for you to not realize the nib is loosening.

The magnetic connection to the iPad is good, but the pencil could fall off if you brush it from the side. If you stow this in a bag, I could see the pencil sliding off into the bag while traveling. I bought a case with a flap that goes over the pencil, so I never have this issue. Cheaper options to fasten the pencil would be useful.

Conclusion: I see some of the negative reviews on the product and I just have to shake my head. There are certain things that are up to the customer to pay attention to and is not necessarily a fault of the product. You just need to take care of your things. Writing a 1 star review because you lost your pen or you think its "trash" is useless and goes to show you're not using the product correctly or you're not taking care of your stuff. I use this every day and I'm really happy I got it. It can use some more accessories and some design tweaks, but I definitely recommend it for anyone who has the money. This goes without saying, but you should also be responsible about the things you buy.

    Magnet is weak

    • Written by TIM A from Edmond

This pen worked great, and was completely happy with it. However, the magnet is somewhat on the weak side, as it fell off down the subway tracks. So be careful.
