Not great for an awesome iPad

    • Written by Ming Y from Chiswick

The new iPad is pretty special. You would have thought the new keyboard would be a step up from the previous too.

On the key front it pretty much is. Same layout, same texture, same feel. The only different is the back covers the back of the iPad with magnets and there are two different positions to tile the iPad (I still have no idea how they worked out that these were the two ideal positions because they don't work for me).

That's not all where there is changes from this year's new Smart Keyboard compared to last years. Last year's model if you wanted to fold away the keyboard and use the iPad you could very easily, fold it away and hold the iPad comfortably in your hands. This year's model folds around so the keyboard faces out. That's right, if you fold away the keyboard they face downwards so holding the iPad feels very uncomfortable. It feels weird holding the iPad and feeling the keyboard on the otherwise. It makes freak out that I'm gonna hit keys and it will start typing as I'm using the iPad. Very strange design.

Another oddity is the overall design of the folio. Last year's case had the folds so the over looked nice with the grooves. It's something that you come to expect as an iPad user and using Apple covers. The new folio is flat at the front, of course no folding parts for the keyboard but when you have something as beautifully designed as the new iPad Pro, something that reflects that in its accessories isn't asking the work. I'd even be happy with a subtle Apple indent at the front.

Overall the keyboard is great, can't fault it but compared to last year's folio keyboard it's not great. The design features really let it down and I'm actually looking at third party keyboard and folio cases to replace this one which is a shame to say.

    Expect better by now

    • Written by Nicolina D from Kingston

I wanted to love this slick and fine design. The concept is there, duribility and action will definitely become an issue. Magnet and the connection is good/ not great. However, give it a good shake that IPad Pro will go flying. The design really needs some side gri,on at least the 2 top corners. The action is horrible. I noticed sometimes I had to hit a key sometimes 3 times before it would type a letter! The Numbers also don’t respond well. I have tiny Xs hands with no long nails. So it’s not m,e every other key board I use works just fine. Just poor response and design. I question if they made it so fragile so people would blow through these every year or have their IPads fly out leading to broken bits.
Seriously, give me 5 min in the design room. By 2018 the keys should also light up.Not impressed probably going to return. Much better designs out there.

Great case, good keyboard if you don’t fly

    • Written by Dan K from Maplewood

While I am overall pleased with the keyboard and like the form and fit better than the first generation keyboard, I am frustrated that the keyboard consistently stops working when in flight. The keyboard works during takeoff and as we get close to landing, but does not work during cruising altitude. Seems that I am not the only one experiencing the issue. If you fly a lot and plan to use your keyboard in flight, do not buy!

    Not worth the price

    • Written by Johnny N from Ridgefield park

For $180 I expected a lot more than this flimsy cheap feeling case. The magnets are pretty weak and pops off the ipad extremely easily. The keyboard is decent but nothing to rave about and no backlit keys. Although the new pencil is magnetic, it would be nice if the case could be designed to securely keep the pencil in place in addition to the magnet. Overall a decent attempt, but overpriced and unfortunately nothing else is on the market yet. Hopefully logitech releases a keyboard case soon.

    Not so Smart Keyboard Folio

    • Written by Michael L from Duluth

I just purchased this product yesterday and it leaves a lot to be desired.
    Pros:
Fit is nice, pencil can be charged wirelessly, magnets were decent (not great but held up to normal use), keyboard felt good without being cramped
    Cons:
No side protection, cheap feeling material, shows every little mark, when folded back the keys are exposed making for a very uncomfortable feel, price point is awful

I ended up returning this and am currently searching for something better. The old keyboard may not have had back protection but they were smart enough to cover the keyboard when it wasn’t in use. I hope Apple comes out with more options in the very near future.

    Disappointing

    • Written by Patty J from Indianapolis

I purchased this keypad with my iPad Pro about 18 months ago. About 5 months ago I starting having problems with it and now it is almost useless. After going into the store to have it looked it it was decided to replace my iPad as the connector seemed worn. After one more day the keypad is still not working properly. Now I need to purchase a whole new keypad- it is expensive given the short time it works. Not happy

    Cheap Material

    • Written by Randall M from Watertown

The keyboard is functional. However it has some flaws. The biggest one is that the material is cheap. Didn't see this as a problem at first which other reviewers pointed out. However Ive had the case for less than a month and its already starting to tear. Very disappointed.

    An okay keyboard case

    • Written by Kris S from Birmingham

It fits nicely with the iPad as it should since it's made by apple.
The case has kind of sharp edges which is annoying.
Keys aren't backlit, since I've bought this, I've had time to try a few other keyboard options that are easier to type on.
No side protection at all which is probably my biggest annoyance.
The build quality does not seem to justify the cost at all. Feels very cheap.
The keys are exposed on the back when I'm just using the screen on the pad only. The case does come off very easily so it's not a huge deal.

    Needs a backlight

    • Written by JEFFREY M from San Francisco

Why on earth Apple created this keyboard and did not make it backlit I will never know. It’s a great keyboard as long as you don’t ever need to use it on airplanes at night or in any dark setting. In other words, you will not be able to use this keyboard 50% of the time. It needs a backlight.

    Mixed thoughts

    • Written by Sam W from Portland

I think the idea of the folio keyboard is great. It attaches easily and offers good protection. I love the typing experience.

However, I am extremely shocked at how cheap it feels. The materials are aweful. Certainly not a premium feeling device. Shocked I spent so much money on an apple item that really does not feel or look the part.

    Functionally fantastic, aesthetically awful!

    Not worth it

    • Written by Maggie R from Arlington

Not worth the money because it does not protect the ipad - a huge monetary investment - whatsoever. The back magnetic cover is not strong enough and in an attempt to simply pick up the ipad, the case came off and the ipad fell face down on the floor. Luckily only small cosmetic damage was inflicted to the corners of the ipad. I will be buying a different case immediately.

    Just OK

    • Written by Edwin M from FLUSHING

The only problem I have with this case is the price :( other than that I love it! Works so well and it looks much better compared to those on amazon. The Rubber-ish thing is a bit odd I would have loved a leather version for this price and then maybe it would have been worth it.The keys take a bit to get used to but it happens with everything out there. The keys feel cute after using it for a while love the fabric feel of them makes it comfy and fun. Also viewing angles are ok, mostly for desk use which I have no problem with. I would love to give it a 5 star but there’s a couple of things that by now apple should have nearly perfected,

I really wish I never got this

    • Written by Brandon W

This keyboard was so expensive for what is does, Now having it for a few months, I can say that the typing experience is not awful. However, I have almost broken my iPad several times because it does not stay put in the case very well. if you are stationary for a lot of time, then this keyboard may work for you. There are other keyboards that are now available that may be worth trying.

This is based on the larger version

    • Written by Brian B from Colchester

    The keyboard works.
However it gives no corner protection to the iPad - which gives cause for serious concern.
Because of the design of the iPad I suspect that the previous suppliers of devices to protect the back and corners and allow any brand of keyboard to be attached have been knocked out of the market.

Stars rating based on the lack of protection given and the apparent obstruction to any third party ability to supply a compatible device.

Disappointing from a protection standpoint, types amazingly well

    • Written by Adam N from San Diego

I bought this keyboard folio less than a month ago, along with my new 11 in iPad Pro. The keys, and typing experience are very good. What is not good is the lack of protection this offers your very expensive iPad. Within the first month, the magnets failed to hold my iPad and it slid out of the folio completely, hitting the floor and putting a sizable Knick in the bottom corner of my 1200 tablet.

Apple is breaking their 14 day return policy for me to take back this inferior product and allow me to try the Logitech Bluetooth keyboard which appears to offer much more protection for the iPad at a much lower price. I am hopeful that it will type just as well and offer more protection to my tablet. The fact that it is less than a month old and has battle scars already is quite irritating.

    Adequate keyboard. Horrible case.

    • Written by Derek M from Houston

Buy this case if you don't value your iPad's safety. This case relies on a single magnet to hold the iPad in the case. Meaning, if for some reason the magnet doesn't grab on to your iPad, your iPad will come out of the case and break on your tile floor. Furthermore, Apple will not stand behind their products when they fail and you will have to pay the full 499 to repair the screen. They will tell you the folio is not designed to protect the iPad. Good luck getting them to explain how else to protect it while using this folio, other than buying AppleCare.

Avoid the highway robbery charge for repair. Get a keyboard case that will actually protect your device.

The keyboard itself is adequate and otherwise functions fine.

At first I was really happy with this product as it worked very well and served quite usefully. Although a year after I bought it it stopped working and I was really upset as I coudn’t use or fix it in any way after it broke.

    Poor materials and durability

    • Written by d.a.m.0 S from Glasgow

Whilst I initially balked at the price of a keyboard cover touching £190 I went full in with the iPad Pro, pencil 2 etc. The cover was an expensive mistake. Drab, grey clammy plastic which marks easily - and the keys constantly mark the screen. Now just 8 months in the surface is starting to 'bubble' and a split is opening up on the hinge. Took it into the local Applestore who said these were just 'cosmetic' issues and unless the cover split completely in two it still technically functioned (!) First real Apple fail Ive encountered. Plan to offload on ebay and buy something more durable, that comes with pencil protection, from logitech or other.

Sturdy, but compromised for the sake of design purity (again) :(

    • Written by Pierre R from Woodbridge

The new keyboard cover has serious flaws. a) No protection on the sides, b) no position to write with the pen (a major feature/reason to buy the iPad pro), c) no position that allows the iPad to stand without the keyboard sticking in front.

The keyboard folio cover for the previous gen iPad Pro was so much more versatile and thus better, I wish Apple would sometime "compromise" design for function, at the end of the day you're selling tools/devices to be used, not to win a design context. If that's what you're into you should get into sculpture or pottery not making electronics.

Great keyboard, but doesn't work properly on airplanes

The keyboard is great, except for when you are in the air. Compact, types well, and looks good! If it only worked all the time as it should.
