Wish there was another option for Keyboard by anybody

    • Written by Sinclair L from Holloman Air Force Base

I really don’t like this Keyboard. My biggest complaint is the magnetic attachment. Anytime I move my screen forward while on stand, the iPad pops off the magnetic hold. Anytime the screen isn’t laying flat on a surface, the magnetic hold breaks and the keyboard falls off the iPad. I can’t see how this would protect the iPad at all in a fall. I have had a Logitech Keyboard for an iPad Air and it actually snaps into place and holds well. There isn’t a good way to fold the keyboard away, the only way is to flip it back on itself which keeps the keys exposed and is not convenient. It feels weird that while you are trying to hold the iPad you keep pressing keys.
I also really wish there were multiple colors to choose from. You can have any color you want as long as its black.
As others have pointed out, it is VERY expensive for what you get. Once Logitech or someone else developes a better keyboard for the iPad Pro 12.9 I will absolutely be ditching this one and getting it.

The reason I didn’t give this just one star is the keyboard works very well. The typing feel is vey good. However I just can’t recommend this keyboard due to the weak magnetic hold and annoyance it causes every time it breaks its hold and falls off.

Many Issues, But Also Some Great Features

    • Written by Anonymous

On my keyboard case, the spacebar has a noticeable discoloration or “wear”, right where I click on it all the time. I started noticing this after only a month after I got this product (the warranty does not cover cosmetic damage...). This is only a big deal when the lighting conditions are right, but it seems unacceptable given the price you pay for this. Another thing I don’t like is only having two viewing angles. I rarely use the angle where the iPad is almost 90 degrees, and the second angle is only good if I use the iPad on my lap, not on a desk. This case also makes the iPad Pro 12.9” noticeably heavier and inconvenient to hold for a long time while using. The color is overall boring, and I wish there were more color options. Also, why no backlit keys?

The thing I like about this case is the keys are nicely spaced, pleasant to click on, and give a nice, quiet click. I also like how the entire case easy it is to clean (the material dries really quick!). The iPad is easy to remove from the case since it’s only attached via magnets, and I love how secure it is when it is in keyboard mode. I discovered from a YouTuber that if you flip the keyboard on your desk so that the letters are facing upside down, you can use this setup for drawing for example (although it looks ridiculous). Overall, I would not recommend this product unless you plan on using your iPad on your desk most of the time, want the convenience of having an all-in-one keyboard, case and stand, and don’t mind the questionable, low quality especially at this price. Apple seriously has a lot to learn and improve on with this product, but there are some things it does well. Hopefully future keyboard cases will be less expensive (while having better quality somehow) and address the common issues.

Perfect Blend of Form and Function

    • Written by Andrew R from Fort Mill

Before purchasing I read all the bad comments about how the keyboard is not backlit, the materials feel cheap, it’s overpriced, etc. So I was scared that this thing would be awful. I don’t really write reviews but felt the need to defend this product. For me, the keyboard case is perfect. It’s lightweight, comfortable to type on, extremely convenient/flexible thanks to the powerful magnets, and I actually like the material. This is not a protective case. For me that’s a good thing because it preserves the aesthetic and overall experience of an amazing Apple product (buy AppleCare+ if you’re worried about dropping your iPad). I’ve worked several full days using this keyboard and feel like it’s the perfect blend of form and function. It is pricey, but I think if you prefer overall experience above all else like I do, then you won’t be disappointed with this purchase.

    Warning

    • Written by Anonymous

I’m writing this review for one reason. The problem with this new keyboard and how it attaches to your brand new $1000+ IPad has a huge flaw! I’ve paid for it dearly, and I want to warn each of you before you purchase it. There is nothing that secures this keyboard case to your iPad but magnets on the back of the IPad. Are they strong? Enough to where it holds the IPad while in use. The problem is when opening the IPad up, it is very hard to tell which side is supposed to open as they are both held shut with magnets. If you open the wrong side, your brand new iPad will tumblr to the floor. I realized this and carefully opened it each time and never had an issue, but my wife is another story. She didn’t realize it was only secured by magnets. So when she opened it, it separated easily from the magnets and tumbled to a tile floor. Fortunately the tempered glass saved the screen, but now I a nice gash in the top corner of my new iPad. This case is flawed and the keyboard is not even that good. The sides of the iPad are NOT protected in it either as they are exposed because decided to go with a magnetic back. Buy a protective case and wait for the Brydge keyboard case coming soon! I will be returning this, making an Apple care claim, buying another case, and waiting for the brydge to type on.

    It Is What It Is...

    • Written by JACOBÍ M from HOUSTON

Off the bat, yes, this product is EXTREMELY overpriced for what you’re getting.

    LIKES:
    - look and feel of product
    - it covers the front and back of device
    - quite sturdy when using on lap, or other non-tabletop surface
    - two different viewing angles

    DISLIKES:
    - of course... PRICE
    - no other color options (we could’ve at least gotten Poduct RED)
    - NOT backlit — this really baffled me, especially at this price point, and Smart Connector thruput
    - when using in portrait mode, the keyboard is exposed on the backside... I can already see this causing issues in the (near) future, and Apple will probably not be helpful, or replace with a better version
    - Apple is really touting the “Augmented Reality (AR) future”, but with this keyboard/case — when folded over — it covers the camera (which ALL AR apps require), so you only have two choices for using any type of iSight camera-required app: [A] let the keyboard dangle on the left side of the device (which is a bit ridiculous, and uncomfortable), or [B] remove the product completely, which defeats the point of it... and, is also, a bit ridiculous

    * Apple was very “smart” with their marketing by not calling this a “case”... it’s a “folio”

This puzzling product seriously does make one wonder what was going through the engineers’ — and, marketers’ — minds when they were developing this product, especially knowing that customers would pretty have to purchase this (or, the overpriced Smart Folio) for device protection since they most likely didn’t give reputable 3rd party companies the schematics for these devices so they could prepare and offer other options for release day. For shame, Apple. For shame.

Recently, a lot of the company’s choices have become VERY questionable...

An excellent If somewhat expensive product

    • Written by Gerald L from Pontefract

I bought the Keyboard Folio as I needed immediate protection for my iPad. As a case I love it, whether balancing on one’s knee for typing or positioned on the bed or other soft surfaces to watch movies it’s ideal. The perfect package for me would be the Keyboard Folio without the keyboard as the design is far superior to that of the Folio which offers little stability on soft surfaces due to the narrowness of the stand but unfortunately that’s not an option. So for me it was a little expensive as I only occasionally use the keyboard as the screen keyboard on the 12.9-inch iPad is so good. Having said that I don’t regret the purchase and to be honest any third party Folio will have to go some to encourage me to change from what is an excellent product.

    I love it!

    • Written by Veronica S from Arlington

I don’t usually write reviews but I thought it may be worth it after reading all the negative reviews here.
I agree that it is too expensive and I hesitated to buy it but I am glad I did. I did because they weren’t many options out there.

    1. I love that it is magnetic
    2. I think it looks elegant. It is very thin and material looks strong to me
    3. I love that I don’t need to charge it like other keyboards
    4. I love that I can fold it all the way back and use just the screen
    5. The connection is the best. Fast and super reliable

It would be perfect if it had a space to storage the pen somehow.

I love it but again, it is expensive. All Apple products are expensive though!

    (+)
    1. front + back protection
    2. magnetic
    3. spill-proof keyboard
    4. stand
    5. familiar macOS keyboard shortcuts ; ) i.e. command-tab
    6. Smart Connector: No plugs. No pairing. No charging.

    (-)
    1. only 1 COLOR available
    2. “Smart” keyboard not so smart:

    a. NOT BACKLIT, so you cannot type in bed without disturbing - what’s the point of mobile device?

    b. inflexible: you cannot even switch to lit onscreen keyboard without detaching slip-proof Folio?!
    3. Exposed keyboard problem:

    a. even if quite flat, might scratch iPad screen, esp, when keyboard gets older

    b. if you use Folio for slip-proof & stand, leaning on keyboard causes accidental typing…
    4. $200 too much for so many flaws incl. not backlight & no color choice!
    5. Apple not flummoxing competition this time?! Folio not as good as Microsoft Surface Pro Alacantra keyboards?!

    Word of warning for artists

    • Written by Michael A from Vineyard

For 1st and 2nd gen iPad Pro users you’ll find this Smart Keyboard feels no different than the original. You’ll find typing and the feel of the keys to be the exact same impressive experience. If your iPad is meant to serve as a finger and typing device then this keyboard will suffice and you’ll most definitely be pleased with the look and feel. For heavy Apply Pencil users this keyboard has one major fatal flaw, the keys are exposed. Let’s say you wish to flip the keyboard cover on it’s backside so you can lay down the iPad for drawing, painting, or design, you’ll also be inadvertently pressing on the keyboard keys since they’re exposed on the backside. Moving or sliding the iPad on a table, airplane tray table, lap, etc. with the cover flipped over will also bring friction to the keys thus the edges of the keys are bound to become worn out over time. The obvious option is to completely remove the cover but that’s the entire point of the cover, I’d like to protect my $1000+ piece of hardware. It’s terribly disappointing that such an amazing piece of hardware could have such a short sighted design to accompany it. Artists and designers will be disappointed and rightfully so.

Basic keyboard at a ridiculous price

    • Written by Todd D from Preston

Apple are again pushing their loyal customers to the limit.
They really are selling a basic keyboard/case for £199 !
It’s not backlit at all, has no shortcut keys like the Logitech one did for the 1st & 2nd gen iPad pro’s.
The Ipad pro itself is ridiculously supplied with a 1m cable, which is absolutely inadequate.
This keyboard is so overpriced & so not worth it........
Save your money until a third party company brings out a keyboard that does the job much better & for nearer half the price.
Shame on you Apple you are pushing us all away.

    Very surprised.

    • Written by Danielle F from Chula Vista

Very slim and very sturdy. I love that it doesn’t need any charging or Bluetooth connecting. The fact that it doesn’t have a backlit keyboard doesnt bother me much since i dont need to look while i type most of the time. The magnets that hold the iPad upright are very strong and dependable. Ive had other iPad cases where my iPad would just tip over with the slightest touch. Very comfortable to type on. I personally love the design.

    Rush job

    • Written by Shaun H from Oak Park

The good: This keyboard offers adequate protection for your iPad Pro 12.9 when its in your bag and travelling with you. When you are sitting on the couch, the case offers good stability on your lap. It has 2 angles when in 'laptop mode' which is handy, and the fact its completely magnet driven is great. I find the magnets to be strong, and they offer unparalleled convenience. Thumbs up for that. Unfortunately, this is where the good news ends.

The bad: The materials are cheap. There is a nice felt covering on the inside rear of the case, which will protect the rear of the ipad nicely, but they didnt bring this around to the front. The front is plasticy and cheap. So are the keys. The keys don't feel tactile. And, equally as frustrating are the sharp edges all the way around! With Microsoft producing these beautiful Alacantra keyboards for their Surface Pro line, it makes the Apple keyboard EMBARASSING and not worth anything close to the $299 AUD asking price. Give this a miss.

    Excellent Keyboard for ipad Pro

    Exactly what I wanted (almost)!

    • Written by Alexandra N from Tulsa

I’m not sure why there are so many harsh reviews of this case. The only reason I gave it 4/5 stars is because the keys aren’t backlit, which is testing my typing skills, and I don’t understand why it’s so expensive. The case itself is sturdy, doesn’t add bulk, protective, and the keyboard itself is easy to use thanks to the keys being raised. The bottom of the case and the keyboard itself is hard plastic so you can easily balance the case on your lap and type while reclining on a sofa or in bed or wherever. I don’t have any real issues with this case and contrary to what I’ve read about its being cheap-looking and feeling or the magnets aren’t functioning properly or the iPad will slip out of the case, I disagree. My advice: don’t manhandle your iPad or the case and you’ll see that this case works perfectly well!

I should have waited for the arrival of the Logitech version and saved my $200. This keyboard is such a disappointment, so disappointing in fact that one can’t even simply turn the volume up and down, start and stop video and the drop protection is non existent to say the least! Returning it and waiting for a real keyboard!

Not a keeper for iPad Pro

    • Written by Joyce P from Woodland Hills

Got mine last night and took one look at this product and sent it back in the morning without even trying it. After spending so much money for my 12.9 iPad Pro there was no way that I would trust this keyboard to hold my new 3rd generation iPad. Apple make a product that is a case and keyboard in one. If you do make this case + keyboard I will buy it, but this one is not a keeper.

The worst Apple product currently available, sorry Apple!

    • Written by Ian F from Ashbourne

I have to say I am a big Apple fan and have spent more than an average user on Apple products because they are so good. So this is a review from an Apple fan and loyal customer. So I was looking forward to getting the smart keyboard after such a long lead time and after hearing how special it would be during the keynote. Now it has arrived I am so disappointed and I will be returning it. As many reviews will say the clicking together of iPad and case are fine, but just that, fine. Yes it needs a backlight too. The feel however, is very plastic, very cheap Chinese plastic. It is bad, really bad, the edges around the keyboard are sharp and feel really cheap. It feels like something you would buy on eBay for £9.99 and then send back. It’s like the old cases you would get, hardboard covered in plastic with edges sealing it all If you are considering this keyboard go and see on in the flesh first and ask yourself is this really worth paying for. My last iPad Pro keyboard was Logitech, I shall be hoping their new keyboard comes on sale soon. I love you Apple but you dropped the all on this one.

Bad quality with very cheap feel and bad design, The Smart keyboard folio is a massive let down of the premium iPad Pro experience! I have decided not to buy the new iPad Pro simply because there is no decent keyboard case for it as Apple's own product is very flawed and cost a fortune!
