    Bose Soundsport Free Review 12-29-18

    • Written by Dave H from Laguna Niguel

I've had these for about 3 weeks so far. First of all the sound is amazing! As soon as I unboxed them there was a firmware update. I updated them and experienced no connectivity issues. You can easily switch between devices by pushing the button on the left earbud.

No lag time when watching my Apple movies, Netflix, Amazon Prime or Hulu. Youtube works fine on my iMac and Apple 4K TV but for some reason there's serious lag time when watching Youtube on my iPhone XS Max.

As I said these sound amazing but they do let in ambient noise so they aren't the best for a really noisy gym or other noisy environments. They worked fine in the weight room but the ambient noise can be bad if you're on a treadmill or elliptical so you'll most likely have to crank them way up. I know that they're designed that way and some people might like this but I wish they would offer optional ear tips that provide better sound isolation for those that want that option.

Also, these don't get as loud as my BeatsX so I have to crank them up a quite a bit more. The BeatsX have much better sound isolation but sound a bit flatter.

Still though these are amazing buds if you can live with the above issues. One last thing is that I recommend that you keep them in the charging case when not in use. I had them in my pockets and lost one of them temporarily when running errands but was thankfully able to find it. The "find my buds" option didn't work as the earbud powered off. Plus, you have to have the Bose app open on you phone or it's pretty worthless. You can't buy just one earbud and have to buy a new pair at $130.00. Ouch!

    Great Sound, Horrible Battery

    • Written by Aaron S from Ewa Beach

I have owned these earbuds for a couple of weeks and really like the sound, fit, and portability. The one issue, and it is a big one. The battery drains when in the storage case in less than a week. I own multiple pairs of headphones, and all of them hold their charge a very long time. Both my beats headphones can go months without needing a charge, not these. When you go to grab them a week later, you’ll find they are dead. I was going to return them, but decided I liked them more than this annoying defect in engineering. Yes, defect! We are in 2018-2019, for a manufacturer to make earbuds that have to be continuously changed is a bad design through engineering an inferior product. I thought mine were defective until I looked up the issue online and found 100’s of people with the same complaints. Bose’s response is this is normal, yes if you designe and engineer it wrongly. Bose’s response is to compare it to a cell phone that constantly drains its battery. Nice try Bose, compare it with headphones and not a cell phone that has 100’s of apps refreshing, downloading, and is on all the time. When my earbuds are off and in its storage case, it should hold a charge longer than a few days. I have turned off find my buds, I guess it runs in the background. This is Bose’s fix. Again, poor design and engineering on the part of Bose. These are for listening primarily, and if your engineering intended for them to be a phone, act like a phone, they have failed. I just want to listen to them when I need them, not wait for them to recharge, then I can wear them. Manufacturers try all the time to make excuses, try making solutions to this design flaw. When we spend a lot of money for something, we just want it to work, period. This has class action written all over it. Their advertising for this product is flawed. How can we get two additional charges out of a case that doesn’t hold its charge? Maybe you workout 15 hours at a time and can use the 15 minute quick charge in a single day. I workout for an hour maybe two 4-5 times a week, but I don’t use them in my home gym, I use my HomePod. But, when I take to the streets, travel, or switch between headphones, I’d like to be able to grab my Bose and go. I can grab my mofi cans that I haven’t used in 6 months, and guess what Bose, I don’t need to recharge them. They have miraculously through proper engineering hold their charge. OkY, 6 months may be a stretch, but they can go months without recharging. Destining a product that needs to be recharged like a cell phone is just plain ignorant.

    BUYER BEWARE

    • Written by Dilip G

2 sets of headphones and $360 later still not working. Left earbud not connecting. I've wasted countless hours trying to turn off turn on, disconnect, reinstall, etc.....it's a very annoying and frustrating experience and BOSE should simply take the product off the shelf and return everyones money. It's clear that many people have this issue.

Why on earth would ANYONE spend premium $$ for a clearly inferior product.
I would recommend NOT buying BOSE anymore. About to leave on holidays and now no music.
    Thanks BOSE. Merry Christmas.

    Great sound and comfort.

    • Written by Pedro P from El Paso

I've had this buds now for 2 months and I use them from the moment I walk out the door and on and off all day long. I make calls with them, I watch netflix on my phone, I listen to spotify. When I don't use them I throw them back in the case for a quick recharge, this way I never run out of juice. The sound is superb, the fit is very comfortable. I would recommend.

I had an issue with my bluetooth disconnecting on my Galaxy s9. Turns out when I lose wifi connection or turn wifi off, my phone disconnects bluetooth also. My phone does that with any bluetooth device. That is NOT an issue with my headphones, it was a samsung issue with all my bluetooth devices.

    Excellent wireless earbuds

    • Written by Robert W from Hastings On Hudson

It’s pretty silly at this point that so many reviews (pretty much all the negative ones) are complaints about erratic connectivity. I got mine around May ‘18 and tried them without running the recent update from Bose that was specifically intended to address this problem and, sure enough, I had the same experience that all the complaints described. Then I ran the update and since then the buds work perfectly without a single instance of losing a connection in either one or both buds, unless you walk so far away that you just wind up out of the otherwise impressive range. As far as sound and comfort, 5 stars. The sound is almost if not as good as the top of the line QC wired series, but without the active noise cancellation which isn’t desirable for working out - running, biking, etc. With the available update from early ‘18 and the probability that recently shipped buds come pre-corrected, Bose SoundSport Free Wireless is simply another great product from Bose and, IMO, a good value as well.
P.S., almost needless to say, the comfort and simplicity of finding the best fit is a breeze. Only thing left is for Bose to offer these in a noise canceling version, as the current top of the line in-ear model just doesn’t cut it with that neck harness. But I’m sure Bose already knows that..

    Bose FTW

    • Written by Mark C from Phoenix

I would’ve happily bought the AirPods but my ears are the type where my EarPods constantly fall out. There are plastic adapters you can get to fix this problem, but you lose much of the AirPod functionality if you do. Still wanting wireless but something more secure and with good sound quality, I opted to try the Soundsport Free. I’ve loved these since I bought them. The sound quality is great and the syncing process is a pretty simple setup. Yes some podcasts only play in one ear and yes you have to download the Bose Connect app, but these are minor inconveniences as far as I’m concerned. I hope AirPods eventually comes up with a more secure design, but for now I’m happy with these.

Good sound quality, but it has a few issues

    • Written by Marcelo K from Chicago

I had high hopes but ended up returning them. The sound quality and the fact that they stay on all the time are a plus. The cons, tricky to pair and it wasn't as simple as any other Bluetooth headsets. There are a lot of complaints from users about the same issues. The instructions mention that turning them off is as simple as pressing a button for 3 seconds until you hear a signal. Not quite. As soon as the button is pressed, it disconnects from the device/smartphone and it immediately enters on pairing mode. The only way to turn them off is by placing them in their case. what if I just want to put them in my pocket or bag? During calls or other notifications, the sound comes out only from the right headphone. I really didn't like that. The battery seems to drain a lot faster than expected. It drops about 20% for every hour used. However, from one use to another it dropped 30%. If I use them to go to the gym in the morning and for something else during the rest of the day, I would have to charge them daily to ensure that they don't run out of battery from one day to another, like it happened already.

    Poor Bluetooth connection

    • Written by Anthony G from Sydney

Bose have a real winner here when it comes to sound quality, however that is not one bit good to anyone when you can’t stay connected long enough to use them. I use these on an iPhone 6s and via an Apple series 3 celular watch. The watch is useles and drops connection every 15 seconds but only when used outside for some reason, if I use on watch indoors they are great. As for the iPhone connection this also has many dropouts but not as may as watch. I have been able to stop most of the dropouts on the iPhone by placing the watch in my right pocket closer to the right bud, this seems to stop disconnection on the phone anyway. If these buds where a cheap device I would not worry and accept that you get what you pay for, however, anyone that has bought these would know they are far from cheap. If Bose wants to compeat in this wireless Bluetooth market they need to do a lot more work on connectity. I’m sorry to say I have gone back to my Apple earbuds which is a shame as the Bose does have much better sound, but at least I’m now listing to music uninterrupted.

    Great earphones, Great sound

    • Written by roberto V from Van nuys

I bought’em two months ago and so far I lovem.

    Pros:
    Great sound .
Don’t fall that easy from your ear (great for running).
Amazing battery live (about 4 or 5 hours) .
    Quick charge .

    Cons:

Sound is delayed when playing youtube videos .( I don’t mind it, but some people do)
Bulky (they are a little big).
Sometimes the left bud disconnects from the right one.(rarely)..

P.s bose keeps releasing firmware updates to address some of the issues.

    Excellent all around

    • Written by Jeremy D from Richmond Heights

Purchased these headphones 3 months ago and have regularly used them to work up and also work around the yard. No complaints here, they stay connected well with my iPhone X and have a really long battery life. Sound quality is what you would expect from a Bose product! Will be buying my wife a pair soon because she keeps stealing them if we don’t go to the gym together!

    Not the Bose standard

    • Written by Ivan R from New York

I bought this product in February (I know, awhile ago), so I do not know if something has changed since then, but it did not work for me at all. I have a few regular Bose earphones and they all work great so I wanted to try this wireless model. Immediately after I put it in my ears and started walking, the left one dropped out and would not start again until I reset it. It kept happening over the next two days so I thought it is just a faulty pair (it happens) so I exchanged it for a new one. The same thing kept happening and I noticed I was avoiding using them so I returned them and asked for my money back (which Apple people had done nicely).

I really like Bose and I really need a pair of sport wireless earphones so I am hoping that you guys will make something like this soon. Just, please, first make sure it works.

    Same experience as the others

    • Written by Daniel Q from EL PASO

Luckily I got these for free since Apple was trying to make up for a bad in-store experience. They worked really well for the first few months. Eventually the left bud would drop out, and I figured it was mainly because I was just listening to a spoken word podcast (as opposed to music). Now, they flat out shut off completely. Oddly, this mainly happens when I walk my dog around my apartment building; they are extremely reliable when I go running or am at the gym. These reviews and the Bose message boards show that this is extremely common. Buyer beware.

Amazing Sound fit not so amazing

    • Written by Scott S from Houston

Bought these and with all bose products I loved them. Sound is just amazing and not a bad price. B&O has a similar pair but for $100 more. The only issue I have with these is the fit. They just were not comfortable for me. I tried all 3 sizes of the changeable ear pieces and still could not get them to feel right. I also did not like the way the looked on. Very bulky so those things made me return them.

    Great audio quality....disappointing functionality

    • Written by Jack S from Kellyville

Audio quality on these headphones are stunning you receive very rich highs and lows, the base is punchy and powerful.
Battery life is decent however the bulky charging case only gives you 10 hours extra.

Connecting the Bose requires the download of an app and then you can start using these, I found that whilst listening to music alone they are awesome but as soon as I opened up YouTube there is an uncomfortably noticeable delay between what is on screen and the audio itself.

The physical feel of the headphones are okay, for me personally the Airpods are much more comfortable and do not pertrude out of your ears as much as the Bose.

If it’s just for music...great! If you want to actually use these properly....don’t waste your money.

    Great Earphones by Bose

    • Written by Jered C from Wesson

These new Bose earphones sound wonderful. The bluetooth connection wizard is easy for set up. It is quite convenient that the earphones contain a "Find my Earbuds" feature similar to "Find my iPhone" in case you lose one of the devices. I am overall very satisfied with my purchase and would recommend to anyone who is looking for a quality waterproof music product.

Nice but staying connected is a problem

    • Written by Larry H from Pearland

First, I would say these are real great buds when it comes to the quality of the sound. My problem is, that I'm on my 3rd pair after sending the first and second set back because of the left ear bud kept cutting out and coming back in. If I turned my head to the right to look at something, the left one cut out and came back in. I've downloaded all current updates so that's not the problem. The pair I currently have now are about 2 weeks old and have done the same thing but maybe not as often as the first 2 pairs. It gets frustrating and tiresome not to be able to listen without the left bud cutting out. I do not jog. I just walk in the neighborhood. Don't know what else to do. After 3 pairs, one ought to have one that works fine. Probably my last purchase of Bose Earbuds. My son's Apple wireless earbuds are working perfect. These are too expensive to have to put up with this constant problem. If they didn't cut out I would be very very please with them. As I said, I do love the sound quality.

    Using Bose

    • Written by Holden S from Howe

I got the SoundSport about a month ago, the case has an amazing texture to it. The case can hold a long charge, and it’s nice that when you put the earbud in the case it keeps it charged. I think that the earbuds have amazing sound quality if the song has a lot of bass in it the Bose give a really good crisp bass. I think they stick out a little too far, but for how much is packed into it I think it’s fine. Though sometimes the signal can get a little out of wack even though my phone it either in my pocket or on a table, But again it has so much packed into it that I’m fine with it

    Extremely Comfortable Wireless Bluetooth Headphones!

    • Written by Nicole B

When I first received the Bose SoundSport Wireless Bluetooth Headphones, I was very impressed & pleased with the design & size of the neat charging case & the earphones themselves. However it did take me a few moments to figure out how to sync them & fit them in my ear properly. It's nice that the case has R & L indicators for which goes in what ear. The noise cancelling works wonderfully - I couldn't hear anything while listening to music. I did have some issues with connection/interference where occasionally one would cut out momentarily for no apparent reason when I wasn't even far from my phone (which is what they were connected through. Even after troubleshooting there was no clear explanation for why it occurred, but it wasn't a chronic or frequent enough problem to change my opinion of them. Overall they're great wireless Bluetooth in-ear headphones & I would definitely recommend them!
