Great Feel, Spill Resistant, Fast But... Section 508 Accessible it is NOT

    • Written by William C from Bristow

Really love the keyboard and have had one on each iPad using it regularly. My iPad 12.9" generation 1 has had the keyboard on it since it came out in Sept 2015. Yes, the lettering can wear and yes the space bar gets shiny with use. I have one on my iPad Pro 10.5 as well, same story.

The biggest single problem is that there is no way to activate the "Siri keyboard" or "speech to text" when the keyboard is attached. You must remove the keyboard to have the iPad soft keyboard appear. Then it eventually activates the speech to text and the button with the microphone appears.

I will commonly use speech-to-text to dictate my emails, my notes, and even in Pages for word processing. Not having a microphone key on Apple iOS keyboards is a huge hinderance, even for those not disabled for which it is a necessity.

As other reviewers have noted, Apple's attention to detail on this product is somewhat disappointing.

When any Apple keyboard is attached, the iPad is no longer Section 508 Accessibility qualified. Accordingly the Apple keyboard needs to be banned from government purchasing as it is operates contrary to accessibility use law.

The Best iPad Keyboard By Far - But There’s Still Room For Improvemenmt

    • Written by 준현 문 from 성남시 분당구 운중동

    Pros
    - Great tactile response for such a thin keyboard
    - Smart Connector negates the need for any pairing or charging - it’s already ready for use, just like a laptop keyboard
    - Unlike a laptop keyboard, it doubles as a cover that is always attached to the iPad, which makes the device extremely versatile. I can easily use it as a normal tablet even with the Smart Keyboard on, or I can easily remove the Smart Keyboard whenever I want to use the iPad alone.
    - At 0.5 pounds, it’s very lightweight for an iPad keyboard case, which usually weighs more than 0.8 pounds
    - Pretty stable for such a lightweight and thin keyboard case made out of fabric
    - It’s dust, water and spill resistant

    Cons
    - No backlighting (understandable because the keyboard needs to be thin enough to be used as a cover)
    - I wish it could be even lighter and thinner. The device itself is about 1 pound, so relatively spreaking Smart Keyboard is about half the weight of the device it complements. With the Smart Keyboard attached it becomes as heavy as the 12.9 inch iPad Pro.
    - Only one viewing angle for typing
    - Not extremely stable on laps, or other non-flat surfaces
    - No function keys (this is also understandable because having a function row will make the keyboard bigger and harder to use it as a cover)
    - Once in a while the Smart Connector doesn’t connect properly

Overall, it’s by far the best keyboard accessory for iPad Pro if you do a lot of typing. It takes iPad productivity to a whole new level. But it still has a lot of room for improvement. It is definitely expensive, but I don’t think it’s overpriced. There is no other keyboard accessory you can get that matches the overall experience of the Smart Keyboard.

Like it so far, a bit expensive

    • Written by Lauren S from St Clair shores

I purchased this keyboard with my first iPad Pro in February, it has worked perfectly for me in the last 8 months. I like the easy magnetic attachment and the fact that is doubles as a case. I haven’t had any issues so far. Keyboard strokes are fluid. I got some sticky sauce on the felt portion of the keyboard and was pleasantly surprised that it wiped was able to be wiped off with a damp cloth, leaving no stain or residue. It was a bit expensive though.

    Far better than expected

    • Written by Mary N from Chilliwack

After reading some of the reviews I wondered if I should order this keyboard. I decided to take a chance and I'm so happy I did. The Keyboard is excellent and does exactly what I need it to do. I have no issues with the surface and the keys are the perfect size for me.

Great product, but not quite up to Apple standard

    • Written by Connor W from Evergreen

This keyboard is so comfortable to type and work on, even on my lap. However, after a few months the corners began to fray, and loose strings started poking out of the edges. I am still pleased with my purchase, but I feel Apple didn’t work as hard to make sure it didn’t fray. I wish the keyboard was made out of something more durable, but would still recommend this product.

    Gets the job done

    • Written by Daniel A from Salt lake city

I love this keyboard. It is easy to use and very light weight. I needed a keyboard that would sit on my lap while on the train without it falling over or feeling too clumsily. This Smart Keyboard works great on desk surfaces and on your lap.

With the iPad being bigger this keyboard feels a lot more comfortable that then 9.7 iPad. It took me about a day to get used to the way the keyboard feels but loved using the familiar Mac shortcuts on it.

The keyboard certainly does not feel very durable and the fiber like material attracts a lot of debris on the keyboard. I also wish there were more of a color variation than just grey.

    I've loved this solution

    • Written by Martin E from WATERLOO

For what it's worth, I have had no trouble. The "does not lie flat" argument isn't true for me--the biggest concern is that for the first maybe minute or two of use, the keyboard takes time to settle onto a flat surface, and then it's fine. I bought my keyboard with the iPad, when it was released, so it's over a year now, and I've had no connectivity or compatibility issues. The only complaints I have at all are that the labels for certain oft-used keys like N or A are starting to rub off, and the lack of backlighting, which in such a slim device seems a forgivable omission. Otherwise, I've used this thing as my main driver for authoring, and have at least 90-100,000 words written on it so far without a hiccup. I find the keys surprisingly springy and click-y in a good way, the thing is spill and dust proof, and while it does nothing to protect the back of the device, the front seems fine. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this product. (using US layout, BTW).

    Good keyboard - useless support

    • Written by KEITH M from Shoreham By Sea

The keyboard's good. Lacks backlighting however. Magnets work better than the Apple cover. Pairs well with the Tech21 hard back protector.

It does not work like a Mac keyboards, so don't be misled.

The instructions "Switch from your SMART Keyboard etc" are wrong. For a start you only get a partial IOS keyboard bar. Showing the text/spelling choices or username/password options. There is no down v on the keyboard, it is actually the 'globe/world' key you use to 'toggle' this onscreen bar. When you first use it it gives you a keyboard choice dropdown. After selecting the keyboard (usually the language of choice) you want from a pop up menu the emoji screen remains. If you press the keyboard symbol (bottom right) it will toggle off immediately. You have to press the 'ABC'. It will disappear, but whenever you normally have the option bar in IOS it will appear again.

To cancel the bar when it pops up press the down v in the right hand corner. You may have to re-toggle to get it to work again.

Apple need to train their support staff about this. I spent a wasted hour going through it with two of them!!! They hadn't even seen the keyboard!

    Excellent But Not Perfect

    • Written by Roland M from WINCHESTER

I recently picked up this keyboard for my 12.9” iPad Pro and thus far I’m pretty satisfied with it. The biggest flaw in my opinion is the viewing angle when in the up-right position. When up-right the iPad is nearly at a 45 degree angle which for me is too far back. Others online have mentioned wedging something behind the iPad (such as an Apple Pencil or AirPod case) in order to bring the viewing angle closer however this is a clumsy solution. The other issue I have is the lack of backlit keys. I tend to use my iPad quite a bit in the evening and in most cases the iPad screens illumination is not bright enough to comfortably light the keyboard.

The Pros in my opinion do outweighs the cons however. The keyboard is comfortable to type on and familiar to other Mac keyboards. The fabric design is durable and prevents junk from getting under and in between keys. One thing that not many people talk about is the fact that the keyboard doesn’t take up a lot of room in front of the iPad. Other keyboards are usually the same width as the iPad, similar to a laptop. With the Smart Keyboard the width is about half the width of the iPad which makes even typing on your lap comfortable. Lastly, the biggest benefit to the Smart Keyboard is the smart connection integration which means you never have to charge it. I have another iPad Pro for work which uses a Logitech keyboard and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on a plane or car and my Logitech keyboard battery died. This is especially frustrating because now you have to wrestle with taking the iPad out of the Logitech keyboard case in order to use the software keyboard.

Much Happier With Apple Smart Keyboard Than With Logitech Slim Combo

    • Written by Mary S from Cumming

I've now had my Apple Smart Keyboard for my iPad Pro 10.5 for a week and have been using it with none of the issues many users have reported -- connection has been excellent, keyboard sits flat, smart cover closes down my iPad.

I initially purchased the Logitech Slim Combo in an effort to save a little money -- it and the Apple keyboard were both on sale at Best Buy & the Logitech was about $45 cheaper. After using the Logitech for less than an hour I knew it would not suit my needs.

Logitech Cons: I do a lot of work on the iPad Pro while sitting in my recliner, with the iPad sitting on a lap desk. The Logitech has a palm rest in front of the keyboard, which causes the screen to sit back further (I wear prescription reading glasses & this resulted in blurred vision, and pulling the keyboard forward more caused the typing surface to bounce as the front was no longer sitting on the lap desk), and also caused a very unnatural and uncomfortable typing position. Hard plastic keys are not comfortable to type on. No forward-delete key. I took it back and purchased the Apple Smart Keyboard.

Logitech Pros: Backlit keyboard, top row of function keys -- I especially liked the volume buttons as I stream a lot on my iPad and frequently need to adjust the volume. Provides a smart cover -- as well as back cover -- and seems well built for drop protection.

The Apple keyboard is far superior is many ways.

Apple Pros: No palm rest in front of keyboard, so typing position is much more comfortable when it sits on my lap desk -- and my visiion is not blurred as it was with the Logitech. Cloth covering on keys is more comfortable and does not allow debris to get trapped around keys -- just blow or wipe off. While there is not a row of funtion keys, many of the Mac function shortcuts are usable with the Smart Keyboard -- you just have to look at some YouTube videos that show them as Apple, for reasons unknown, does not provide that info. The connection magnets are strong and keep the iPad securely in place. The Smart Cover feature turns off the iPad and brings up the log-in screen when it's opened.

Apple Cons: No back cover -- I never had an Apple Smart Cover on my previous iPads (always used Targus case), so never had the back cover Apple used to make, but why on earth would they not make that cover for the Smart Keyboard I do not know. I did purchase from Amazon the Khomo back cover, which has a grey that matches the keyboard, for around $12, and it has a very good fit -- although I don't think it, combined with the Keyboard cover would withstand a drop of more than a few inches. No row of function keys -- especially miss the volume buttons. No forward-delete key. Apple does not provide Owner Manual instructions describing the keyboard's functions -- they could at least refer owners to a video tutorial on their website. For those unfamiliar with the Mac shortcuts, as I am as I never use them on my MacBook Pro, I would never have known I could use any of them on my iPad with this keyboard had I not found a YouTube video when looking at reviews of this keyboard. HINT: Hit the Command key when you're using an app and it brings up a window showing the function keys available for use within that app.

For now I'm giving a rating of 4 stars, simply because I do not know what longer-term use problems may arise -- will the cloth covered keys begin to wear to the point of being un-usable, will I begin to have connection problems, or any of the other issues for which Apple now offers extended warranty coverage (initial warranty is for one year -- the extended warranty adds an additional two years of coverge).

Overall, I am very happy with the Apple Smart Keyboard and would recommend it over the Logitech for sure. I have used it to type this review and my typing speed and accuracy match that of my MacBook Pro -- I'm pretty fast and usually make no more than a couple of errors.

Fair assessment of Apple iPad Pro keyboard

    • Written by Stephen H from Richmond

Read all the negative comments before purchasing the keyboard. Also tested the keyboard in several stores. Overall, this is the best alternative on the market as far as I can determine from comparisons with the Logitech Slim Keyboard and several Bluetooth alternatives.

First, the Smart Connector works. It remains connected better than the Logitech’s ribbon connector, and there’s no loss of connectivity that I’ve experienced with Bluetooth keyboards.

Second, the keyboard feels almost as good as my MacBook Air keyboard. It’s very responsive.

Third, the materials used are first class. I like the fabric covering that provides some texture to the keys while protecting the mechanics from spilled liquids.

Fourth, the iPad angle is fixed in a good position but less flexible than some others. I find typing with the keyboard on my desk or lap to be equally satisfactory.

Downsides - lack of illuminated keys for use in poor light situations. However, Apple could fix this shortcoming with a software modification to display an entered keystroke by temporarily showing the key entered on the iPad screen. Tactile feedback sounds could also be useful as an option. The retail price is about $60 too high so I bought mine used on eBay for around $100. It’s worth that because of the valued functionality that it brings to my iPad Pro 10.5.

    Slim low profile

    • Written by Mark P from Manassas Park

I've owned other keyboard cases in the past with older iPads and they have provided much more comprehensive protection than this smart keyboard does. You definitely need the compatible case to go on the actual iPad. Other than that it words perfectly! It's almost like having my MacBook with me without the bulk. I wish there was an option for a lighted keyboard.

    Pros:
    -Slim
    -works perfectly
    -activates almost instantly when docking.

    Cons'
    -No protection for the iPad
    - when in my work bag the keyboard tends to disconnect from the iPad
    - no lighted keyboard

Good function with a bit design suggestion

    • Written by Arthur K from Jakarta Barat

I use the new iPad Pro 10.5 and I like this keyboard 'cause I don't have to pair each time like the bluetooth ones. Really help me a lot if I need to type in a hurry. Also the keys works perfectly, responsive and each keys are well-located.

Some suggestion for the smart keyboard design :
    1. Give more space between the keyboard top rows and magnetic stripe (where the iPad Pro attached) 'cause sometimes my idle finger touch the screen during fast typing. It's annoying
    2. Please consider putting light on keyboard for using in dark place.
    3. I saw the keyboard material is like a fabric / cloth. It attracts dirt easily. Please provide the silicone protective keyboard like notebook.

That's all I can say and so far I'm satisfy. Good work.

Works well...a few design flaws tho

    • Written by Sara P from Westborough

The keyboard works flawlessly with my iPad Pro 10.5. However, I have two complaints about the design of the keyboard and one suggestion for an additional product. My first complaint is that there is no way to prop up your iPad without having the keyboard exposed, sometimes I just want to have the screen propped and use my apple pen, however, I accidentally hit the keyboard sometimes and it can also make using the iPad a little uncomfortable. My second complaint is that the keyboard/cover pops off of the iPad pretty easily, offering no sort of protection to the front screen of your iPad. My one suggestion for an additional product would be to add an optional numerical pad that somehow connects to the iPad or keyboard. Overall it is very helpful for classes and work.

    Nice and light

    • Written by Diana B from Richland

I'm pleased with this keyboard. I find it easy to type on and it's very light. I like that I don't have to charge it separately. I also like that there is no lag time before I can start typing on it, as there was with my old bluetooth keyboard. It would be nice if it also allowed using the iPad in portrait orientation, and had a pocket for an apple pencil.

A must-have for iPad Pro users

    • Written by Nicholas C from Austin

If you have an iPad Pro you really need to get a keyboard. Pairing this with your iPad really turns it into a laptop replacement. The feel of the keys are great, despite being small, I find it enjoyable to type on. My only complaint is there is no way to tell the state of the caps lock. The cover folds into various positions to allow for laptop style typing, up-right movie watching, or horizontal drafting table position. Being magnetically secured it easy to remove and attach. I like reading without the extra weight / bulk of a cover.

I purchased the 10.5 iPad Pro this week along with the Smart Keyboard. Even after reading the reviews here, I still wanted to give it a try. Granted, it’s only been a week, but I absolutely LOVE my keyboard. It’s slim, and the keys feel so comfortable making my typing experience more enjoyable. I actually type faster using this keyboard. Unlike other comments, it lays flat without problem and connects immediately. I rated it 4 stars for lack of protection for my iPad back and loud keys. I love the feel of the keys, but I’m going to be pretty conspicuous in meetings with my loud typing...lol. I just ordered a 3rd party slim, clear cover for the back compatible with the Smart Keyboard. Overall, I’m extremely pleased. I’ll update this review periodically after I’ve used it more.

    Great so far..

    • Written by Malcolm N from Stevenage

When I bought my iPad Pro I also bought the keyboard, but sent it back as I hated the lack of protection for the back of the tablet. So I bought a complete case similar to the Smart Case Apple used to make for my previous iPad Air.

I still wanted a keyboard so bought a Bluetooth keyboard and case, but that made the whole thing just too big and heavy, not acceptable at all.

I then discovered a back case cover designed to work with the Smart Keyboard so bought this keyboard again. This makes a much more satisfactory ensemble, and so far all is sweetness and light.

I still think this is well overpriced, but the convenience of not having to charge it is very clever. Getting it into typing position is a bit of a juggle, but once mastered it’s OK. I needed to set up the fingerprint ID to work with both thumbs as the home button/sensors can be the right or left depending how you use it, but at least iOS gives you the extra ‘digits’.
