    Works great, until it doesn't

    • Written by Gregory S from Mountainside

I loved the simplicity and thin form factor of the keyboard. My only complaint out of the box is that it does not protect the back of the iPad, but that's the tradeoff for the thin form factor. I found the keyboard easy to type on, and did not have a single complaint until just after a year of ownership...then it intermittently started losing connection to the iPad. At first, this was solved by disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard...then after 18 months it stopped working entirely. The apple store confirmed that it's DOA, and offered to sell me a new one since it's out of warranty.

I can deal with the premium Apple price tag, as it typically comes with a premium product...but that is not the case here. This is a disposable product. If you can live with purchasing a new unit annually, this is the keyboard for you.

It's not for me - I expect more from Apple products.

    It will stop working!!!

    • Written by Justin E from Southlake

Instead of using the smart keyboard to write this review, I am using the on screen keyboard (frustrating). This keyboard is the second replacement I have received and was told I could not receive another replacement if this one broke. The first lasted a week, this one lasted more than a year. I am the kind of guy that typically only buys apple accessories, hopeful that the product performance relative to the cost are excellent. For example, I own no third party chargers or cables, hoping that will extend the product life. But back to the keyboard, it has been a terrible experience. It will stop working for you, and you will have to replace it. It’s very disappointing...

No recall for 10.5” smart keyboard. Very dissatisfied!

    • Written by Willem B from Salt Spring Island

The smart keyboard as an expensive purchase and it started to fail almost exactly after 1 year and completely failed by 14 months. Accessory not supported, terrible battery life. This keyboard is now a really expensive piece of nonfunctioning cleverness.. Seeing the other complaints on here I think Apple should wake up if they want to keep customers happy. We pay for quality not obsolescence and disposable tech.

Not robust, stops working reliably after around 18 months

    • Written by Neil G from Vancouver

This is not the standard I would expect from Apple. I’ve had my keyboard for almost 18 months and now it fails to detect when the keyboard is open. I’m so disappointed that this fails so soon, but lasts just long enough to be out of the 1 year warranty!!

    Disappointing Product

    • Written by John Christopher S from Chicago

Like many others, my smart keyboard has become unresponsive when connected to my iPad Pro 10.5. The keyboard became unresponsive after only 18 months of intermittent use. I expect more out of my Apple products particularly given the price paid for this accessory. A very disappointing customer experience.

    Not Impressed

    • Written by KEITH W from Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Worked well for 13 months, the case is is coming apart and "accessory not supported" message showing all the time. The keyboard will not work at all. I feel cheated after paying top money. I expected something better from Apple. They will not entertain a replacement as it is a month out of warranty. They even had the cheek to offer me a replacement for £130.00. Not a long term product in my opinion.

    Shows Wear

    • Written by Nancy B. D from Huntsville

This is not intuitive; I find myself looking for shortcut keys and some placements. My main issue is how quickly the ends of the keyboard wrap show wear. I have had mine for 1-1/2 years, and do not use it regularly. Strings are hanging off, and the metal underneath shows on both ends. This is an inferior product in the Apple lineup.

So far so good. It’s slim and not bulky. The keyboard is responsive and makes my iPad feel like a laptop. I have to say, I was a little hesitant of buying it after reading a few negative reviews. But thankfuly, not the case with me. I also got a great price match that saved me a few bucks. I love everything about the keyboard. Highly recommend it.

    Don't Buy!

    • Written by Paulo E. R. T from São Paulo

I got two Smart Keyboards. One for my iPad Pro 12" first generation and the other to my iPad Pro 10.5". Both failed.
The 12" Smart Keyboard has been changed after a recall program from Apple. The 10.5" Keyboard starts fail this month, after 30 days from warranty expired.
It's a expensive accessory for use for only 1 year.
    Don't recommend!

It will break within 150 Days

    • Written by Vandalay I from New York

I’ve had 3 of these, each treated with great care. Within 100-150 days it will simply stop working reliably. The iPad will stop registering it and say “Accessory Not Compatible”.

Apple will neither fix it nor offer to replace it.

    Great Until It Died

    • Written by James R from Boerne

The Smart Keyboard is a really great companion to the IPAD Pro. It makes the device as functional as a laptop for 90% of my normal usage. Unfortunately, like many others, mine started to have runaway keys and displayed connection errors right as it turned a year old. By the time it was 14 months it was completely dead.

The Apple store offered a 10% discount on a replacement device but I buy Apple products because I expect quality and longevity so this just does not seem sufficient.

    Very disappointing.

    Died after a year

    • Written by PQ T from Singapore

Good keyboard only at first. The biggest problem is that it is not durable given the price of the product. The product died after a year and Apple Support is unable to do anything about it. You might be better off getting a portable bluetooth keyboard from logitech / other companies, which are known for their durability.

    Good but doesn’t least.

    • Written by Robert L from Wakefield

I bought one of these just over a year ago to team up with my new 10.5 iPad Pro and iPencil. Worked great for about 10 months and then stopped.

Went back to the Apple store where it came from and explained/complained and they ordered a new one.

This worked fine for about three months until I started getting the “accessory not supported” notice and this has packed up as Wellington the last month or so, when I was abroad working!

This is very poor considering the cost of the keyboard cover, I do not expect an expensive product from a world leading manufacturer to become unusable after such a short time.

During my conversation when I replaced it, I got the impression that it is a commonly known fault and possible based around where the keyboard folds along the ‘hinge’ line. Perhaps the thin wiring in here breaks easily?

If this is known then I suggest that it is sold as “Not fit for purpose” and we should get a refund or lifetime replacements.

I will be going back to complain again but recall being told that as a replacement it would not have the 12 month guarantee so it makes you wonder how many they expect to break!

Being a long time Apple user and having numerous Apple products, this is the first time I have been dissatisfied with one of their products.

Apple Quality Design and operation - Met every expectation and more.

    • Written by Michael J from Santa Rosa

I travel 15+ days a month and tried 3 other cheaper keyboards. You get what you pay for and this keyboard beat the others hands down for functionality - auto connection (don't have to pair with bluetooth) to iOS, magnetic/rapid connect/disconnect feature, closest to a real laptop keyboard in functionality and keyboard feel of the three I tried, and sits at a good angle (and flat on table) angle for both typing and viewing when seated at a desk. Am not sure what the negative review for not lying flat is referencing because mine lies perfectly flat?

The Best iPad Keyboard By Far - But There’s Still Room For Improvemenmt

    • Written by 준현 문 from 성남시 분당구 운중동

    - Great tactile response for such a thin keyboard
    - Smart Connector negates the need for any pairing or charging - it’s already ready for use, just like a laptop keyboard
    - Unlike a laptop keyboard, it doubles as a cover that is always attached to the iPad, which makes the device extremely versatile. I can easily use it as a normal tablet even with the Smart Keyboard on, or I can easily remove the Smart Keyboard whenever I want to use the iPad alone.
    - At 0.5 pounds, it’s very lightweight for an iPad keyboard case, which usually weighs more than 0.8 pounds
    - Pretty stable for such a lightweight and thin keyboard case made out of fabric
    - It’s dust, water and spill resistant

    - No backlighting (understandable because the keyboard needs to be thin enough to be used as a cover)
    - I wish it could be even lighter and thinner. The device itself is about 1 pound, so relatively spreaking Smart Keyboard is about half the weight of the device it complements. With the Smart Keyboard attached it becomes as heavy as the 12.9 inch iPad Pro.
    - Only one viewing angle for typing
    - Not extremely stable on laps, or other non-flat surfaces
    - No function keys (this is also understandable because having a function row will make the keyboard bigger and harder to use it as a cover)
    - Once in a while the Smart Connector doesn’t connect properly

Overall, it’s by far the best keyboard accessory for iPad Pro if you do a lot of typing. It takes iPad productivity to a whole new level. But it still has a lot of room for improvement. It is definitely expensive, but I don’t think it’s overpriced. There is no other keyboard accessory you can get that matches the overall experience of the Smart Keyboard.

The Smart Keyboard Does Not Live Up To It's name

    • Written by John K from Tampa

Like so many others, I bought the Smart Keyboard for my iPad Pro several years ago and it began to malfunction after approximately one year. Subsequently, I have no ability to type and I receive a constant annoying message telling me the keyboard is not attached properly. I know I've spent upwards of $10,000.00 over the past ten years on Apple computers, iPhones and iPads; nevertheless, a sales person at the Apple Store told me they cannot (will not?) address the problem or give me a refund without the original box. (Honestly, if we all kept our original boxes for Apple products, then we would make good contestants for the "Hoarders" TV series!) Shame on Apple for this kind of treatment of loyal customers who not only use their products, but recommend them to so many PC disciples.

    Does Not Last

    • Written by Kenya S from Dumfries

This keyboard died after about a year from purchase date. The keyboard was rarely used and for price I expect it to last over 1 year. I believe the warranty is 1 year my device died on month 13. I purchase Apple products at a premium price because they typically last; however the quality has gone down of the last few years. Do not purchase unless you plan on buying another keyboard within the next year.

Terrible - doesn't work and not worth the money

    • Written by Donna S from New Vernon

I purchased two of these keyboards for my kids for school. My son said that his keyboard started malfunctioning after about a month and my daughter said that hers stopped working after about three months. They would have to un-attach their iPads and then reattach it for their iPads to register that a keyboard was there (it would not type). Now, a year and a half later, both their keyboards don't work at all. No matter how many times they try reattaching the keyboard, 9/10 times it doesn't register. My daughter said that this has also happened for most of her friends, so it's not just their iPad/keyboard, it's everyone. I am extremely disappointed. For $160, I would expect it to be higher quality and it to last longer. Additionally, I had to buy a separate case for their iPads because this doesn't protect the back. Normally, I love Apple products, but this one has disappointed me.
