Its shock-proof design protects the device from accidental drops and has an IP 54-rated resistance to the elements. With an integrated Thunderbolt cable and universal compatibility, this drive gives you the best of durability, mobility, and performance.

    About Thunderbolt

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.

PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.

Thunderbolt gives you up to 10 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.

Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

      Thought it was my computer

I thought it was my computer that was ejecting the drive and even turning itself off. I knew if I finally got my LaCie to finally connect if I even breathed on I thought it was my computer that was ejecting the drive and even turning itself off. I knew if I finally got my LaCie to finally connect if I even breathed on the cord it would eject. I came here to see if there was a way to get a new cord for mine but after reading that others are having this same issue...I was happy with mine until it did this and I've had it for 3 years or more. Very sad.

      Quick, Simple, and Reliable

I have had three of these hard drives. I purchased my first one in 2012 and have since purchased others. I use them daily. One of them is a dedicated back up for my iMac and the other two are used in my daily workflow and travel with me. They have worked reliably with the abuse of air travel and through the mail. I take them with me abroad and in the field. I use them to hold backups of my photography work and to share work with clients. In my use and experience with these hard drives, they have proved to be very reliable. I like the ease and speed of using the thunderbolt connection, but like having the USB 3.0 as another option when needed. I have not experienced any of the issues that other people are having. I highly recommend this product.

Built like a tank, but lacks performance

Tried with both the fitted 1TB Samsung HDD and two different SSDs. My inexpensive USB3 encloser costing 10% outperformed this unit. If you really, really want the rugged packaging and don't care about the price then I recommend the USB3 without Thunderbolt, version. In addition this doesn't have a 2nd TB connector, so you cannot daisy chain an external monitor. I would not recommend this unit.

      No Apple Formatting Encryption

This drive does not allow MacOS encryption when formatting it. It requires downloading special software to encrypt data. So, I'm sending mine back.

      Absolute nightmare

"Rugged"? Not a chance. I used it purely as an archive drive, i.e. copied files to it and put it away in a safe place. When the critical day came that I needed "Rugged"? Not a chance. I used it purely as an archive drive, i.e. copied files to it and put it away in a safe place. When the critical day came that I needed to restore lost data, the drive was corrupt. 100% data loss. Appears to be a hardware failure, as I can't even erase the device successfully. From the looks of the reviews, I'm not the first. Plus, the warranty expired a few months ago. Total waste of money, time, and it left me feeling burned. I will never trust a LaCie (or Seagate for that matter) product again.

Does not live up to the hype.

I bought this 'device at a Mac Store because I bought into the branding. A 'rugged' hard drive sounded good because I knew that I am accident prone. Within one I bought this 'device at a Mac Store because I bought into the branding. A 'rugged' hard drive sounded good because I knew that I am accident prone. Within one month, my device feel about 1 meter from a chair as I was running time machine. Completely ruined it. Now I feel like a sucker. The box said that this could withstand drops 'up to' 2 meters. I guess I should have read more carefully. Don't buy into the advertising, and don't buy the LaCie Rugged Portable Hard Drive if you're hoping for a device that can withstand minor drops; it cannot do so reliably. I would have been better off shelling out a third of the price for a normal hard drive considering how 'rugged' this proved to be in practice.
