  • Overview

LaCie's Rugged RAID Thunderbolt/USB 3.0 mobile hard drive makes your data more portable than ever, ensuring that your projects aren't delayed by external drive/computer incompatibility. With both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports, you don't have to compromise between durability, mobility, and speed. And because USB 3.0 is backwards compatible, you can connect it to any standard computer. The integrated Thunderbolt cable also stows away neatly when not in use, so you'll never lose it.

    Game-changing speed

The Rugged delivers transfer speeds of up to 240MB/s, so you can back up and transfer mountains of data in a fraction of the time. Leave it in RAID 0 (striped mode) to maximize speed and capacity. Or choose RAID 1 (mirrored mode), where your data is duplicated across both internal hard drives—so even if a drive fails in the field, your files remain completely accessible.

    All-terrain data protection

The Rugged will protect your data in non-operating mode from accidental drops of up to five feet. With an IP-54 rating for data security against dust and water splashing, you can be confident that your data will remain accessible.

    Prevent unauthorized access

Protect your data with LaCie Private-Public software, which lets you password-protect the entire drive or only certain volumes with AES 256-bit encryption.

    True mobility

With 4TB of capacity, the LaCie offers massive amounts of storage to carry all the content needed for all of your projects. Store more photos, footage, and video in the field with this ultimate on-the-go solution.

Lacie would not help, even though they have a service that for $5 a year, they will cover recovery. When I registered the drive for warranty, there was no notification that they had such a plan. Very deceptive. Also on Amazon, there are a number of purchases with the same issue of crashing prematurely. I would not recommend using LaCie. If you must have it, then at least search their web site and purchase their recovery insurance, or buy another hard drive to back up their harddrive. Pretty sad experience!!!

Not Suitable for Use in a Warm Climate

I purchased a LaCie 1TB Rugged Firewire 800 USB3 External HDD in December 2011. This LaCie Rugged HDD has been used on a handful of occasions to back up photos I purchased a LaCie 1TB Rugged Firewire 800 USB3 External HDD in December 2011. This LaCie Rugged HDD has been used on a handful of occasions to back up photos while travelling. Recently I attempted to use this LaCie Rugged HDD to perform an independent backup of some photographs and personal files from my iMac. I was unable to copy these files to this HDD as the Lacie Rugged HDD became very hot after saving between 83GB and 84GB of files and then misbehaved, hanging Finder in OSX El Capitan and also corrupting any other external HDDs that I had plugged into my iMac at the time. I spent several days on the phone to Apple Support and finally traced this problem with Finder hanging and becoming unresponsive to the overheating of the Lacie Rugged 1TB HDD. The case design of the Lacie Rugged HDD and in particular the rubberised edge bump strip clearly does not allow sufficient cooling of the HDD inside. The LaCie Rugged HDD may be suitable for use in Antarctica, Siberia or Alaska but is not suitable for use in a warm climate. I am very disappointed with this product as I expected a long life from a premium device for which I paid a premium price and all I have now is an expensive rubber edged paperweight which has only been used a handful of times over 5 years.
