Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)

  • Overview

The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect traveling companion, the adapter has a clever design which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

For such a great engineering company, why can't you get the obvious things fixed. These cords fray at the connector. ALL of them do. Sometimes at the power brick, sometimes at the Mac end. Then I have to go spend 80 bucks for another adapter - when all I really need is the cord. So do the right thing, and put a MagSafe connector on BOTH ends of the cord, and a MagSafe jack on the side of the power brick just like the one on the side of the computer. Then, I could (1) disconnect the cord completely from the adapter when it's in my bag, and not have to worry about the cord getting bent and broken where it connects to the power brick, (2) could have my choice of cord lenghts - maybe a short one for my desk and a long one when I travel, and (3) I could replace JUST THE CORD if it got damaged or worn, for something like 5 or 6 bucks instead of 80. What do you think? Would it be so hard to do?

Buyer beware, save yourself the hassle and find an 'I" MagSafe charger if you have a non-unibody.

Why won't Apple fix these awful power cords?

They are horribly overpriced at $80 and they break every 8 months or so. Clearly a goldmine for Apple. In the past 3 years, I've had one break near the magnetic end and one near the wall plug end. A third just mysteriously quit working, though it looks brand new. I am very careful with these cords, but it makes no difference. Also, they get dangerously hot. I had just talked my mom into switching from PC to Mac, but honestly now I might talk her back into a PC. I know these complaints are not new. Several reviews say the same thing. So when is Apple going to fix the problem? Or at least come up with a "Buy 3 Cords Get 1 Free" deal?

Furthermore, the cost of all of the adapters adds up to the price of a cheap computer! My daughter used a Chromebook for four years, and never once had a problem with her cord! Maybe I'll just go buy one of those.

Really, really disheartening to see how Apple has happily sat on their hands about this for so long. Weak, very weak and definitely staining the legacy of the brand. Though that seems less and less important as they roll inexorably on. Just had my 3rd charger in 5 or 6 years, which is better than many have experienced. Though $240 over that stretch for power supplies that at this point I feel can fairly be said to be gauranteed to fail before the internal components are spent, is a travesty for a company that that flies the flag of "superior design" so proudly.

It is extremely hard to change that part of the cable without changing the whole cable with the transformer, and I've done that twice already. It is pathetic the macbook pro lasts for like eternity AND the charger has to be replaced ~yearly. I really hope the person who came up with that design gets fired.
