  • Overview

The 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector so if someone should trip over it, the cord disconnects harmlessly and your MacBook Pro stays put safely. It also helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector lights up; an amber light lets you know that your notebook is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives you an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect traveling companion, the adapter has a clever design which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with MacBook Pro with Retina display.

The plug has a serious design flaw that causes it to disengage far too easily from the socket. The plug and wire extent out about 3/4" making it a long lever. The magnet is quite strong, and pulling the plug out straight takes quite a bit of force. Tap the wire or plug up or down however, and it comes right out. Such is the power of leverage. It works fine on a desk, but on your lap it can be a challenge to keep the plug in. This should be, and hopefully will be, redesigned in the next revision. The lever needs to be shortened. The L connector design helps by removing the wire, but its not absolutely necessary. The plug itself is more important as it does not flex and is too long, Something shorter and fatter would be more effective.

The entire point of having a laptop is to use it on my lap, on the couch, in bed, or any other place I desire... but this power adapter does not allow for that as it comes loose at the slightest nudge. It annoys me to the point of searching the internet for "tips" on how to keep the thing in there. (to no avail)... which led me here - where I just am going to repeat the cries of all the others that HATE THIS ADAPTER.

T shape - bad design for the power adapter

Even the smallest f As others have commented before, the power adapter keeps falling off. It's not that the magnet is week, but the design itself is faulty. Even the smallest force on the T-shaped connector acts perpendicularly, which easily hooks the connector off. The previous L-shape may have been a better design. Last but not the least, I wanted to buy a spare adapter for home but $79 (+tax) for this useless adapter feels like a total ripoff!

The adapter stopped working this morning, even though (i) the device had no signs of damage and (ii) the wire did not have any strains. When I explained my situation to a sales representative at my local store, she simply told me that Apple warranty lasts only 1 year and that this adapter should not break as long as it is "treated nicely." I agree with other reviews here that this adapter is designed quite poorly. I am not sure what else I could have done to treat this adapter any nicer, if sitting in an office is enough to make this product stop functioning.

One thing I observed about the cord is while the computer was in use and plugged in, the cord would overheat, and slowly deteriorate. I would expect the cord to last longer under normal use, but there should also be a way to account for when the computer is in use while charging.

The first one I had almost caught on fire when I left it plugged in overnight. Luckily I woke up from the burning smell. To be fair I just ordered the 3rd one before my current charger gets too damaged (It still works but casing of the wires is broken and in some places you can see the wires inside), to avoid any house burn down. The choice is this or a knock off version unfortunately. For an expensive brand, sure this product is a great disappointment.
