This is the access If you'd like to spend 80 bucks on an accessory that will cause your external monitor to blink on and off all day long... look no further!!! This is the accessory you've been dreaming of. I've tried different monitors. I've tried different HDMI cables. Nothing seems to help. This thing is incredibly frustrating to use. If you do decide to call support, expect to be on the phone for an hour only to be told "try plugging it into another port" on your single port usb-c macbook...

      WARNING - Bad Hardware

Apple even lists a few drives (including their own SuperDrive, pre 2011) than don't work with this adaptor, but there are more that don't work - both for storage OR Time Machine (!). This is really bizarre since the other USB-C to USB-A adaptor WILL work, but since this adaptor doesn't supply power to your MacBook, it's not a long term solution. In the instances where the Multiport adaptor DOES work with an external hard drive, it can experience drastically reduced speeds and randomly unmount the drive. The straight USB adaptor, with the same drive, does not show these issues. I can't believe Apple put this on the market without 1) more rigorous testing and 2) with this serious an issue. Having an external hard drive work with your laptop is a pretty important requirement. Terrible, terrible piece of equipment. I was an Apple employee and have worked with Macs for decades. This issue was diagnosed with a genius at an Apple Store after we went through several Multiport and regular USB adaptors, and then followed up with additional testing at home. Apple should be ashamed.

That leaves you trying to connect your monitor, external HD, keyboard and mouse to the second USB-C port. But I drove myself crazy trying to find an adapter that could accept a monitor, power the drive and the other USB connections. Not sure it exists. The USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter solved the problem. It lets you connect your HDMI monitor AND still power the laptop by connecting its regular power block & cable with the pass-thru connection. (The USB port won't power an external drive, just use it to charge your phone.) That leaves the MacBook's _other_ USB-C free to connect something like the Belkin USB 3.0 4-Port Hub + USB-C Cable, which has 4 powered USB connectors. Hair-pulling problem solved.

      Very expensive mediocre performing dongle

Connecting your usb hard drive to the usb connector is a bad idea, resulting in potential data loss and slow performance. The HDMI port works okay for my screen, but the price of this dongle is way out of proportion.

I treated it with care, as it was my office's purchase/property and it's lasted over a year with no breaking or tears. I will now be purchasing one for my new job and based on my experience, I hope it keeps up to its standard.
