What’s in the Box

Apple Pencil, Lightning adapter, and extra tip

  • Overview

Apple Pencil expands the power of iPad Pro and opens up new creative possibilities. It’s sensitive to pressure and tilt so you can easily vary line weight, create subtle shading, and produce a wide range of artistic effects — just like with a conventional pencil, but with pixel-perfect precision.

      REALLY. Still no replacement tips!

But having no ability to replace a seven cents piece of plastic at the end of the stylus is more than just a little frustrating. I love my new iPad Pro, but for me without the pencil it is not one stitch more useful than my three-year-old iPad. I bought the pencil, which wasn't easy as everyone will remember, but now having lost one tip, and gone through the other, I have $1400 worth of technology that is next to useless because I cannot buy a new tip, which would likely be seven cents worth of material, which I would still happily buy for Apples hugh markup... $10????... If replacement TIPS WERE ONLY AVAILABLE... This so atypical for Apple.... it just makes me sick with frustration! Please Apple..MARKET REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR THIS OR ALLOW OTHERS TO DO IT!!! I have spent too much time and money on your products to be treated so poorly.

      It's sketchy...but don't DARE drop it.

When you bear down it can get confused and flash it's edge shading tool. I got mine in 3 weeks. The cylindrical industrial design promotes breakage as every other #2 pencil in the world is faceted so as not to roll off a desk. No eraser as on Wacom and 53. Lots of changing tools. Mine fell from my pants pocket to the ground (3 feet) and the tip bent and it would not draw properly. I changed the tip and now it works better, but still has sensing issues. Dropping a computer is a rarity, but dropping a pencil is pretty commonplace. Seems too precious for long term everyday use. How can you reinvent a 99 cent pencil into a $99. pencil and have it be this fragile? (2 star deduction.) It falls nose down with all the electronics inside so I was toast. It's also about an inch longer than the average pen so it seems awkward in a shirt pocket, thus flipping out of my side pant pocket. Be careful not to lose the chicklet sized adapter that allows it it be charged by cord. No means of attaching it to the case. Samsung buried theirs in the device. When it works I love it and the software can only get better. Great pencil, just don't drop it..

      Could be much better

The execution, not so much. For it's precision, I like the small diameter tip on the pencil. However, it would be nice if an alternate tip with a slightly softer material was available. The tap-tap-tap on my iPad Pro screen becomes very loud at night when you are next to your sleeping spouse. For me, the body is too hard and slick to provide a comfortable secure grip, especially when combined with the natural oils exuded from your skin over time. A slightly larger diameter or a semi-hexagonal shape would be more useful, and/or the addition of a removable textured silicone sleeve for those with a weaker grip. Just because you can cram the electronics into a small tube the size of a #2 pencil doesn't mean you should do so. The round body and too-weak magnetic attraction of the single metal ring located near the cap prevents secure temporary storage on the Smart Cover - a very convenient resting space since no other means of docking/storage on the iPad is provided. If the body had squared-off sides, and/or there was a 2nd magnetic ring near the stylus tip the adhesion to the Smart Cover would be much more secure. With the variety of small parts that come with the pencil a small pocket-sized storage case for the adapter, the spare stylus tip, and the pencil cap (when charging) would have been a nice addition to the package.

I'm a college professor, so my main interest stems from a desire to move away from paper notes to electronic. Problem was, no stylus was really effective or accurate enough for my taste. I read extensive reviews on the Apple Pencil before deciding to purchase it, and I could not be happier with it. It's accuracy, and flow in taking notes is only surpassed by pen and paper. I saw numerous complaints about the length, slippery surface, losing the magnetic cap and the USB connector, as well as damage incurred in drops. To be safe, I also purchased the 4 count of extra tips, leather case, and have kept both the extra tip and USB connector in the original packaging for safe-keeping. While I have been careful when using it, I have had none of these problems. If the Pencil is not in my hand, it's in the leather case for protection. In the week or so I've had it, I've charged it a total of two times (and it's seen extensive use). I actually prefer to use the Pencil for normal use outside of note-taking. I highly recommend the Apple Pencil for use with the Pro. It only takes a very light touch rather than a harder tap like I found necessary with my Dot Pen for the Air 2. As far as legibly writing in the notes app, I am able to write in cursive without any issue.

It's been dropped more than a few times and it stilll works perfectly fine. I've had to replace my tip three times, which I don't think is too bad after so much use. I ordered the replacement tips directly from Apple one afternoon and was very surprised that they arrived by FedEx the very next day!! There are a few minor things that I think could be improved; I do think the Pencil is a little too smooth, it could use some sort of texture for better grip. Its a bit top heavy, like not balanced correctly. The tips become loose when using the Pencil for long periods. I cannot wait for iOS11 and all the new things I'll be able to do with my Pencil! This is the best accessory!! I wish it worked with my phone too!

      Good enough for 3 stars

For business, it was mainly my MacBook or iPhone. Now, with the Apple Pencil, I use my iPad for just about anything. I hardly use my MacBook, and the iPhone is used mostly for calls and quick checks of my emails. However, I am giving it 3 stars because I had to buy: cap with a stylus (I didn't want to wear out the tip and the cap is not secure, and falls off rather easily ), a cover and tether for the cap (since it falls off easily), cover and tether for the charging adapter (otherwise, its small and easy, very easy, to lose), cover for the tip, magnetic sleeve (to protect the pen from drops and the magnet for keeping it attached to the iPad (otherwise, you will never find it when needed). The tip unscrews itself . I found this out when the pencil stopped working no matter what I did. The way to pair and charge the pencil and the iPad is to hook it up to the iPad is....ugh....forget the aesthetics of it (ugly), but it can easily break. So, I like the Apple Pencil after having spent extra money on the things that Apple forgot to do. I'm sure it will stop working in a few months, just like the AirPods did (poor and unreliable connection, lot of static). As with any Apple product that I've purchased, it will probably stop working within 6 months. Actually, my MacBook ("the best and most expensive" one so I was told) started to go blank all of a sudden within a WEEK. Apple "Genius Bar" said "let's erase everything and reset to manufacturer setting," as they always do. I know...I'm going off tangent, but the point I'm trying to make is that the Apple Pencil is great after spending extra money to make it useful....Great product for now and when it works. Oh! One last comment, I end up using the stylus (purchased separately from Amazon) more than the tip. Oh! Also, I had to buy Notability and PDF Expert in order for it to be useful for business. Otherwise, Notes is pretty much useless at least for my business needs.
