If you're connecting via HDMI, the audio signal is included in the HDMI cable. So if your device (TV or receiver) has HDMI, you won't need optical audio. I'm using it to avoid the TV when using the Apple TV to stream audio to my stereo receiver, but if you're only using t for TV, the TV audio or your "home theater" system will get the audio from the HDMI connector.
