I need to connect my Motu Traveller Audio interface which is Firewire 400 to my 2017 iMac which is Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C). Are 3 adaptors necessary?

  • Yes: Motu -> FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable -> Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter -> Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter -> 2017 iMac. Or you can find a Thunderbolt 3 dock that includes FireWire 800 (I don't think they're made anymore? I use the one from OWC): Motu -> FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable -> OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock -> 2017 iMac. Or you can use a Thunderbolt 3 PCIe enclosure with a FireWire PCIe card which can have more than one FireWire port and could have a mix of FireWire 800 and 400 ports.
