does this fit the 9.7 iPad pro?
I've been waiting for a case like this from apple for a long time because I'm always loosing my pencil, so this case would be perfect for my iPad 9.7, if it were to fit.

Based on the dimensions of the old iPad Pro, it will fit, however, it will not be the perfect Apple fit.

No, this does not fit the original 9.7" iPad Pro, only the new 10.5" version.
