if they are responsible then it is fine. I had a ipod at the age of 10 and broke it like that but that me I am pretty sure your 9 or 10 year old is responsible.

Good question. I bought a white iPhone 4s for my daughter in 2013 when she was 10.
In July 2014 she dropped it. So we Bought her the iPhone 5s. 11 is a good age.
Hope this helps.

Yes, but I would put parental restrictions (located in the settings). A lifeproof case would be helpful.

Yes, at the age of ten up is the age when you start gaining independence, so they will have to start calling people. And if they get bored they can purchase a game.

If you are a parent you can turn on restrictions on their iPhone under Settings

I would say that 9 isn't a very good age to get an iPhone 5s cause they're a little too young. 10 years old
Is still young and some kids tend to drop it a lot that age. I would say 11 or 12 because they've matured and some are responsible enough to take good care of it. But the parents definitely need to have rules for their kids about spending time on their phones. I got my 5s when I was 11 and it's still amazing! I'm 13 now.

This is more a question for parents to answer, so I'm not going to be very qualified to answer.
Personally, I would NEVER get my 9-10 year old an iPhone 5S, or any iPhone. I think that age is entirely too young and the child is, at that point, too immature. Also, you run the risk of your child on social media, where they can be very heavily bullied based simply on their age, and there are more inappropriate things on the internet for that age than you can count.
Granted, there are parental restrictions in the iPhone software, but unfortunately, most parents overlook those. They can be difficult to find, and they are not entirely effective.
IF you want your child to be perfectly safe online, do NOT buy them an iPhone!!! It is too dangerous for them. However, again, it's not my choice to make, but based on this information, I hope that people realize that 9-10 years old is too young for an iPhone.

no. its not a very good age because they wont be very responsible with it. My parents are waiting till i'm 12 or 13 or till they see that i am responsible. my brothers and sisters didnt get a phone untill they were 15 or 16. they are very responsible with it, because they got it at a very late age. but if you do get one for them, put restrictions on it, and dont let them get a facebook or instagram accout for a while.

I suppose you could put a cover on the phone so it would be unbreakable then you could lock in certain apps that your child can only use.. However you don't want your child being the victim of a crime and his phone stolen from him.. At the end of the day is your informal choice
