Ethernet is the cable that you would run from a modem or router to a computer via an ethernet port on the computer.
The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina Display do not have built in Ethernet ports so there is nowhere to insert the cable. Apple's answer to this is the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter. You plug the adapter into an available Thunderbolt port, then connect your Ethernet cable to the adapter.
This is very useful if wireless internet is not available in your location or you would rather have a faster, stronger connection.
