Would a MacBook Pro be faster than my PC?

I've been using Windows my whole life, Windows 98 all the way up to Windows 7. My computer isn't that great, it's running on an Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor (1.80 GHz) and only has 1024MB (1GB) of RAM.

I'm thinking about buying a MacBook Pro and an iMac to take to university with me, I'm going to be taking Chemical Engineering and my computer just won't cut it. But when I looked at the new MacBook Pro it only has a 2.3 GHz processor, and that's not much faster than the one I have now... and I can't really afford anything more than the cheapest one. So would it be worth upgrading, or would it be almost as slow as my computer?

And as far as the iMac goes, I'm only buying one of the cheaper 21.5" models.

  • 2.3 GHz is actually way faster because it is dual core, twice the cores for double speed, and 4 times the ram (makes apps and games perform much better), and the pro and imac would perform great with each other versus a pc and imac.
