What is the average power consumption of the Thunderbolt display when hooked up to a new 85W MacBook Pro 15"?

I'm off-grid so this really matters. I'm gutted Apple have discontinued the 17" MacBook Pro because that extra screen real estate makes an enormous amount of difference. A desktop is much too power hungry for my situation, but if the Thunderbolt display is reasonable then this setup becomes a potential (if far more expensive) replacement option.

  • The Thunderbolt display runs off mains power or 120V AC in the US. It has to be plugged into the wall. It will then power your MacBook Pro and the firewire and USB ports built into the monitor. You can't power the monitor from your MacBook Pro if that's what you were asking. Here are the Apple specs for the TB monitor for power consumption:

    Input voltage: 100V to 240V AC; 50-60Hz
    Maximum power: 250W (Thunderbolt Display while charging MacBook Pro)
    Energy saver mode: 2W or less
