One of the best Bluetooth speakers

I am a big fan of larger Bluetooth speakers such as the Bose SoundLink III, Beats Pill XL, and others in the ~$299 price category. Like many other people, I had a Beats Pill XL and was very satisfied with it. Then Apple recalled the speaker so I was back on the market for something to replace it. I had a regular UE Boom that I liked to take with me when I traveled but I wanted something in the same category as the Beats Pill XL to use in my bedroom, for hosting parties, and to take to the pool. I played around with the SoundLink III and it was fine but, surprisingly, it sounded muddy to me. The highs weren't crisp and the bass was almost overbearing.

I tested other speakers and finally decided to get the Megaboom. It has class-leading battery life of 20 hours whereas most other speakers top out at 10-12 hours, it is waterproof fitting the IPX7 rating, and it has more balanced sound compared to the SoundLink III. Logitech (the owners of Ultimate Ears) has a companion app (available for iOS and Android) so that you can rename the speaker, update its firmware, tweak the audio, and even pair up with an additional Megaboom, Boom, or Roll with stereo or dual-mono sound.

Overall, I have enjoyed this speaker. I find that the 20-hour battery life claim is accurate and actually on the conservative side as I usually play music for about 90 minutes a day and don't have to recharge it until the end of the 15th day (about 22-23 hours of playback). The only aspect I am not a fan of is the lack of bass. Well, there is more bass than the regular Boom and the sound is more balanced compared to the SoundLink III but there isn't as much bass as what the Pill XL produced. To me, that was the pinnacle of Bluetooth speaker sound quality and the Megaboom doesn't quite get there. It's probably more balanced than the Pill XL as the bass from that could be a little overbearing but it never felt bloated and never clipped. I have tried tweaking the sound using the built-in EQ settings as well as manual adjustment but the standard setting, for me, works the best.

So that's why I'm knocking one star off. For my personal preference, I would have liked a bit more bass. It is impressive the volume of music that this can pump out especially being so small. In fact, I ended up selling my regular UE Boom because this one really isn't that much bigger and I think it is just as portable. All-in-all, if you are looking for Beats Pill XL replacement or are on the market for a $250+ Bluetooth speaker, this is the one to get. It sounds better than the Bose SoundLink III, it's more portable, it has the best battery life, and it has more features.

The ultimate speaker from UE. The Best Hands Down!

I was battling with myself on which speaker to buy from all the options that are out there right now. I knew of the reputaion from Ultimate Ears from a prior purchase. The deal breaker was the waterproof aspect. In the past,I have held my portable speakers hostage in a bag at the beach or park because of the fear of damage. The UE Megaboom is durable as it is amazing in sound. Had it out on the beach and had to turn it down becase the sound has a great range that can be misleading because of it's size. Its used every morning in the shower. The speakerphone option is also great. I Love my UE Megaboom!

    Gr8 Sound

I bought the Megaboom to replace my Beats Pill XL. I had to return it because of the recall. The Megaboom is a gr8 replacement. The only thing you give up is a little bit of the bass. But honestly it depends on the track you r playing. There are other things it beats the Beats on. The app is pretty kool. Equalizer is so so. But to have the water resistance and smaller size makes up for the bit of bass you give up. I have had it for about a week and have not regretted the switch. Also, when traveling it is much more convenient to put in my carry on.

Great portable speaker, excellent for most occasions.

I purchased UE Megaboom to replace my Big Jambox, which I loved, but ultimately had battery issues. This speaker has a great sound and design. I use it mostly outdoors with friends and can easily go from background music to party mode with a few clicks of the volume. The companion app is also easy to use. Heavily considering purchasing another one just for the stereo sound, but one is enough sound for me.

The Best Speaker for Any Activity from Crazy to Dull

When I first saw the UE Megaboom, I knew I had to have it. I had heard the UE Boom play, and knew of the great reviews that product had. I thought, 'A bigger brother to the Boom has to be bette rin every way,' and I was right in thinking this.

Everything from the packaging that encases the speaker, the neon coloured cable and adapter, and the build and feel of the speaker itself screams quality. These are all simple but elegant. When showing the speaker to my friends, they all compliment the aesthetics of the product, saying how beautiful it is and how great it blends into wherever I have it.

That is something that is great about the Megaboom. No matter where you have it or what you are using it for, it will not disappoint. I brought this skiing, and it rocked the slopes. I had it beside my hot tub, and it served to bring the party alive. Somebody accident;y knocked it into the water when it was playing, but I had no fears. The IPX7 waterproof rating held strong, as I took the speaker from the water, and it continued to play the EDM track like nothing had happened. After using the speaker in my car, I brought it inside still playing music. I had it in my room, on the second floor, and wanting to change the song realized that my phone was still in the car! This proves the strength of the bluetooth range offered by this device.

Any track from EDM to acoustic covers, classical piano to rock, will sound fantastic for the average user. I say average user because if you are a true audiophile you will hear the small issues in the high and low ends, but overall for somebody wanting a loud portable speaker with 360 degree sound (you can have this in the middle of a room and have the same sound experience no matter where you are standing around it), this is the party accessory for you.

The one thing I would ask UE to do is make it a bit less expensive, so that I don't have to drop the inevitable $300 more for a second to take advantage of the Double-Up feature offered through the app. Based on my experience with this speaker, I will definitely be purchasing a second in the near future so that I can double the amount of Megaboom I can get from this speaker.
