    So Far So Good

So far, I've been very pleased with this 4TB Thunderbolt hard drive. It seems to be working just fine. I did sign up for the data recovery plan which, like the AppleCare protection plan, is a good idea in any circumstance when such a plan is offered. As this disk is to be used for additional back-up and portable storage of data (sound banks, etc.) permanently stored on RAIDs in my studio, it looks like it will be a great addition for my on-the-go production and composition needs.

    Crashed after 5 weeks.Terrible experience!!

Used successfully for 5 weeks, then shut down and would not turn back on. Cost me $1600 to recover my data. Lacie would not help, even though they have a service that for $5 a year, they will cover recovery. When I registered the drive for warranty, there was no notification that they had such a plan. Very deceptive. Also on Amazon, there are a number of purchases with the same issue of crashing prematurely. I would not recommend using LaCie. If you must have it, then at least search their web site and purchase their recovery insurance, or buy another hard drive to back up their harddrive. Pretty sad experience!!!

Suitable for Use in Warm Climates

I'm a DIT by trade and I have used countless LaCie drives across the world, including the Rugged RAID, and they have all performed without fault in all temperatures, from the very high to the very low.

Not Suitable for Use in a Warm Climate

I purchased a LaCie 1TB Rugged Firewire 800 USB3 External HDD in December 2011. This LaCie Rugged HDD has been used on a handful of occasions to back up photos while travelling.

Recently I attempted to use this LaCie Rugged HDD to perform an independent backup of some photographs and personal files from my iMac. I was unable to copy these files to this HDD as the Lacie Rugged HDD became very hot after saving between 83GB and 84GB of files and then misbehaved, hanging Finder in OSX El Capitan and also corrupting any other external HDDs that I had plugged into my iMac at the time.

I spent several days on the phone to Apple Support and finally traced this problem with Finder hanging and becoming unresponsive to the overheating of the Lacie Rugged 1TB HDD.

The case design of the Lacie Rugged HDD and in particular the rubberised edge bump strip clearly does not allow sufficient cooling of the HDD inside. The LaCie Rugged HDD may be suitable for use in Antarctica, Siberia or Alaska but is not suitable for use in a warm climate.

I am very disappointed with this product as I expected a long life from a premium device for which I paid a premium price and all I have now is an expensive rubber edged paperweight which has only been used a handful of times over 5 years.
