Take the Poor Reviews With a Grain of Salt

    • Written by David U from Denver

This monitor is gorgeous! I have the newer 27MD5KB-B ("business line" model with the three year warranty, not purchased from Apple), and it works flawlessly with my 13" 2018 TB Macbook Pro (Mojave 10.14.1). Connects reliably everytime, and the display resolution, brightness, contrast and quality is as good as the 5k iMac I have at home, with slightly less reflection. Speakers aren't quite as good as those in the Apple TB display this replaced, but they're fine for conference calls and music while working. The camera is very high resolution (1080) and works perfectly too. Keyboard volume and brightness controls work seamlessly on the monitor. Granted the aesthetics of the monitor aren't quite as cool as Apple's products, but it looks better in person than in pictures. It has a nice matte black finish and the bezels don't seem as big as you might think. This monitor may have had a tough start, but it's working great for me!

Took Mine Mac Mini to Another Level

    • Written by Domingo M from South Elgin

Own a Late 2014 Mac mini using a Asus 2540x1440 display. Hated the picture quality and sound. Forcing to invest on a pair of external speakers, taking desk space.

During the spring, while visiting the Santa Barbara Apple Store, noticed a LG UltraFine 5K Display being hooked up to a Mac mini and was very surprise. Asked if the Mac mini will be able to drive the LG. The answer was, "We'll see." Man, did it drive it. Even the Apple tech was surprised at the picture quality and sound coming out of this set-up. Right there and then, my thoughts was, "I want one!"

Well, it took a few months, but I finally have it and it meets all my needs and expectations. Outstanding display.

The picture and sounds are both outstanding. The speed of moving data onto my external hard devices are just unbelievable. That's using the Thunderbolt 2 that the Mac mini provides. Can't wait for the new 2018 Mac mini with Thunderbolt 3 that HOPEFULLY will be coming out next week!

Honestly, if the new 2018 Mac mini is NOT a giant leap, I may just keep my $$$ and stay with this set-up because how satisfied I am.

Best display I have ever used

    • Written by Philip R from Bethesda

So many bad reviews I thought I would share. Bought this to work with my 2018 15" MBP. I am mostly running MATLAB for data analysis and software development, and Office365 for scientific papers and presentations. So far works nearly flawlessly. Occasionally a flash when the signal to the monitor seems to be momentarily interrupted - an off/on. I attribute this to software processing on the MBP and/or the Blackmagic eGPU. Absolutely the best image quality I have ever had. Expensive, yes, but I am much more productive using this ONE monitor alone than I am with 15" Retina display or 2016 iMac + Dell 4K. I actually see things in graphs and images I never saw before. For me at least worth the cost because of increased productivity.

    Incredible

    • Written by Jon J from San Juan Capistrano

Picked it up from the Apple Store today. I have the latest 15" MBP, the maxed-out version with i9 and 32gb ram. Pulled it out of the box, plugged it in...my computer was sleeping and it immediately snapped on and has worked absolutely flawlessly in every way ever since. Beautiful picture and extremely simple to use for its primary function, which is what I expect from any Apple product so I'm glad this monitor from LG delivers there.

I'm a software developer by trade and I just had a very productive 8 hour work session on this monitor. I did not experience any drop-outs, interference (I have some high-end audio gear right near the monitor and no issues so far), or light/dark problems like others mentioned (reading documentation on a light background and swiping over to my IDE with a dark background, it works as expected).

I've gone through so many different monitors--the Apple Thunderbolt monitor, a pair of Dell 4K 24" monitors, and a BenQ 32" design monitor. I already love this one more than any of those because it's the perfect size and resolution and fits in really well as an addition to the 2018 MBP.

I'm guessing LG worked out whatever issues the other people here were dealing with, or maybe it wasn't the monitor...

    The best

    • Written by Sebastian S from Jacksonville

I am not sure why all the negative reviews, I can only attribute it to user error or other hardware issues not related to the monitor. I have it hooked up to my Mac Pro. It's amazing compared to the Apple branded monitor. The picture is so unreal. I hooked it up to my MacBook Pro, no issues there neither. I am running the latest version of MacOS. If you want a the best monitor on the market, don't hesitate in buying this monitor. Don't pay no attention to the negative reviews. You have to tweak the monitor, you have to set it as your primary screen, etc..it's not a monitor issues, it's a user issue. So rest assured, this monitor is the tops of the tops.....but do yourself a favor, buy it open box somewhere and save a few hundred....great monitor. In fact, I am searching for my 2nd one currently....

I replaced a 21:9 LG display that used Thunderbolt 2 with this, and I couldn't be happier. Great interoperability with the MacBook Pro (much better than previous), and the image quality and brightness are really fantastic. No regrets

What a nice monitor, not sure what all the bad reviews are about?

    • Written by Bill K from Trussville

This is a fantastic product. I'm not sure what all the bad reviews are about, perhaps there have been revisions. Mine works flawlessly with my 2018 MacBook pro. Really glad I didn't let the bad reviews persuade me to look elsewhere. You get the fully integrated functionality like the Thunderbolt displays. The panel looks as good as my iMac 5k. I love the matte black finish, kind of industrial looking. Nice.

    Amazing Thunderbolt Display!

    • Written by Bobby V from Murfreesboro

I've recently upgraded my MacBook Pro from a late 2013 to one of the new 2018 (the 13" Core i7). In addition to that upgrade, I also purchased the LG UltraFine 5k display and the new Black Magic eGPU. This setup is amazing! The monitor plugs into the eGPU, and the eGPU plugs into the MacBook. I have ONE cable for everything. I love it.

As for the monitor, aside from the iMacs I've seen in the Apple Stores, this is the most gorgeous display I've ever seen. 5k resolution, bright, color accurate, amazing! Highly recommended if you can swing the insanely high price.

    Just Wonderful

    • Written by James S from Colorado Springs

This is an amazing 5k display! I use it with a 2018 MacBook Pro 13" (2.7GHz, 16GB, 1TB SSD), and the Blackmagic eGPU. No dead pixels, beautiful display, sounds great, and no issues. Photoshop on this is really nice.

Admittedly I'm coming from a 7 year old MacBook Pro and 23" Cinema Display, hence, this is quite the upgrade. I'm just in awe.

    Thank you Apple!

Buy the newer version LG part number 27MD5KB-B not 27MD5KA

    • Written by Mark H from Roswell

After extensive research it appears the issues are related to the first generation of this display which is part number 27MD5KA. LG has since rectified the issues and the updated monitor part number is 27MD5KB-B. I purchased the newer 27MD5KB-B for use with my 2017 MacBook Pro and it has work flawlessly. It's a gorgeous display that got off on the wrong foot.

Amazing 5K monitor...don't understand the negative reviews

    • Written by Larry M from Loudon

I've been using a Mac for 15 years and this monitor, placed right beside a 27" Retina iMac, looks absolutely identical! Not close...IDENTICAL. Seriously, I do a lot of photo editing and regardless of what resolution you put this monitor on, its flawless. That said, you do have to do a quick calibration with the Color Sync Utility in macOS to set the whitepoint where you want it. You can set the whitepoint to match a MacBook Pro, if you're using one with the monitor, or you can simply set the whitepoint to where you'd like your whiteness to be. That's the ONLY adjustment needed on the monitor, otherwise it comes perfectly calibrated from the factory.

I have absolutely none of the issues some reviewers here have complained about...literally everything works perfectly with this monitor. It charges my 15" MacBook Pro (2017) as it should (85W power supply) and the three USB-C ports on the back of the monitor serve a hub to keep your MBP free of cables and dongles.

If there is one tiny thing to complain about, it's nothing at all to do with the performance of this monitor...it's how it's made. When compared with other monitors it's just fine, but a) it's not of the thin bezel design, it has a 1/2-inch bezel on the left, right and bottom and because of the camera and light sensor on top, the bezel is slightly larger. But the case is matte black so you don't even notice this. It's not a beautiful piece of sculpted aluminum, as if manufactured by Apple. But it's made to work perfectly with a Mac Pro, MacBook, or Mac Mini. Or any other Mac with a USB-C port.

Honestly, this monitor is a class act! Yes, it's expensive...but so is that Mac you're using it with. If you have a

Use 2 of these with MacBook Pro

    • Written by Phil T from Chicago

Owned for 4+ months, absolutely no issues. The important thing to note is that these displays have requirements, they need to be used with the correct ports on the Mac. To use 2 displays you also must have the correct hardware, I would recommend doing a little research before purchasing. If set up correctly the experience is outstanding.

Love it, works very very well.

    • Written by Andy N from El Dorado

I have been using this monitor for a year now as a daily monitor connected to my 2017 Macbook Pro 8-10 hrs/day (for video conferences 3-6 hour, email general office work. At first there were some issue with connectivity and random crashes, as expected as an early adopter of the best of the best, but as with all software-driven hardware the good folks at LG and Apple have been constantly improving both the monitor and OS software to work very well together. Using this monitor works precisely the same as my old set up (2013 MBP w Apple Cinema Display). Here are the keys to success: Open and log in to laptop before connecting the monitor, once connected you can closed the clamshell on the MBP. When stepping away, I have the screensaver set to come on after 10 min, and sleep set to 90 min, this way I can be gone for lunch and it wakes without issue. When leaving it for several hours or overnight, I put the MBP to sleep and then disconnect the monitor cable from the MBP. Following these rules, just like as I did with my previous all-apple setup, it works flawlessly and allows me to enjoy the best monitor on the market. Hope this helps.

    Best Monitor

    • Written by Lukas V from Umiken

    - Works well with my MacBook (5k, 60Hz)
    - Works also well with my Windows Pc (4k, 60Hz). I am using the Thunderbolt Ex 3 PCI Extension Card.
    - I have Mouse and Keyboard connected to the Monitor and i can easily switch between Mac or Pc by just plug/unplug the Thunderbolt 3 Cable.

    - The Product-Design is well done.

I was skeptical fist but i am absolutely glad i bought this display.
