    cable problems

How I use my cable: I plug it into the wall, and let it rest on the floor and table while my MBPr 2015 charges. When charged to 100, I detach it from my laptop. I only occasionally pack it for travel, and I take care to leave a loop at the ends where there could be stress on the cables when wound for travel. Should I be unplugging it from the wall receptacle every time I'm not using it to charge? Perhaps that is the problem here?

I reinforce all my cables at the business ends with Sugru, as a preemptive strike. The Sugru at the adapter end of my thin cable has a crack running perpendicular to the cord, so that join now has two segments. Ok, still functioning. The Sugru at the MagSafe end is fine. But the cable itself split down the middle about 24in. from the adapter brick, exposing the shielding, so I covered it with electrical tape and started shopping. Perhaps there is an overheating problem.

Still, I come here to find the cable situation is dreadful. Apple used to be the king of quality and when they made a design or engineering mistake, they fixed it. The preponderance of my many Apple devices over the decades has been easy and enjoyable to use, which seemed to set Apple above the crowd. Why is this design reputation not safeguarded as a corporate asset? Are you nuts?

    make that two stars

Guess I'll give the power adapter two stars. I've had the computer now for 5+ years. I love the computer because it is a real "work-horse," but the power adapter umm not so much. This will be number three for me. At least I haven't had to replace the adapter as often as other reviewers, hence giving my review the two stars.

2 Stars because it lasted so long

I've had my Mac for almost 6 years now and my original adapter just died. It was a little weird because it got so hot it melted and came apart. I'm a little annoyed to learn these are so expensive but I need one so I'll have to buy it anyway...

Wire on power cord burns out from bending.

This is such an obvious design flaw. It is amazing that Apple doesn't do anything about it. We have had more than one Power adapter go bad because the thin cord breaks where it meets the white block. Other electrical cords like this have an inch or two of soft rubber or plastic to help absorb the stress on the wire. I just took about two or three inches of 2" wide clear packing tape and wrapped it around the base of the wire where it meets the block. I can already see that the stress on the wire will be alleviated. This cost me basically nothing. No reason I should have to cobble together a fix like this to a high-end product that should have the solution built in from the beginning.

Also doesn't always connect to computer without some wiggling back and forth to get connection light to come on.

    Cables are just too fragile

Ended up in this review page because after my cable frayed, I held it together with tape. Thought it would do the trick for a while but now I'm getting a lot of static noise through the headphones jack when the power cable is plugged in.

Obviously like many other people I'm very disappointed, this being my 2nd charger that meets this fate. Now I would understand and keep relatively quiet if the price of a replacement charger wouldn't be so high, but this is getting annoying.

The way I see it, this cable is either fragile on purpose, or nobody is reading these reviews.

There's no pride to get from the quality of one's product when a flaw this obvious is not being taken care of.

    Very disappointed.

    Caught on fire

I'm giving this product 2 stars over 1 because my adaptor is the original one I received with my macbook over 3 years ago, and it's held up rather well for 3 years. However, I had to replace it today because it caught on fire. Luckily I only got up to grab something across the room and was back quickly to put out the small fire that generated where the adaptor connects to the computer. Had I left my laptop charging when I left for work, who's to say what would have happened. I think Apple needs to consider a redesign on this product and perhaps lowering the price.

I was going to purchase one but then...

$80 is a bit much for a power cord. Even though my cord just started coming apart recently, I surely did not expect to see the multitude of negative comments. Now I'm not sure. I guess I'll use it until I no longer have a choice to avoid getting sucked into the loop of poor power cords. The adapter itself is like new, just the casing of the wire came apart. I take extremely good care of my computer products almost obsessively so, its how I make my living. So This is not really acceptable from a company worth x billions of dollars. We need a new set of eyes on these reviews.

One small cord issue, so many unhappy people

I have had my MacBook Pro 15" for a few years and i've LOVED it ever since! I'm one of the lucky ones who's power cord hasn't frayed on me for about 3 years, but now it's blown right out near where it connects to the computer. I'm with the other people here who ask to have the ability to replace the cord, not the entire power supply! It could be such an easy little fix, that would make so many of us happy! Sometimes it's the little things that people overlook, but make the biggest impact on a product. Please!!! Read these reviews and consider it! I wish I could attach a photo of my busted cord, but I might just mail it directly to you to see our frustrations, we all should, maybe they'll get the hint? Here in Canada I have to pay over $100 to replace mine. Not money I can exactly spend right now, but I have no choice.

My MagSafe Power Adapter became dangerous!

Like many of the other loyal Apple folks, my late 2008 Macbook Pro 15" power cord has completely stopped working. I had to buy a new one for $80.00 and while I understand it's older they should not die this way. I have taken extra good care of this older Macbook Pro and it's been amazing except for the power cord where it connects to the MagSafe wire. It is really not safe at all. It seems as if it could become a fire hazard and also it would be easy to fix with better quality wire! So I sadly join the crowd and ask Apple to repair and redesign the power cords and connectors so we can all love our Mac's 100%! Apple I really hope that you are listening!

    Get it right Apple

We have a MacBook Pro and it looks like I am going to have to buy a fourth charger for this. Two were replaced under warranty and I had to buy a third. This one still works -- somewhat. I have to constantly wiggle it around and get it just right in order for it to charge. I did not remember exactly the price of a new one. So, suffice it to say that I am quite displeased and had quite the sticker shock now when I have decided I need to buy a new one.

    Can't complain to much

I purchased my power supply in 2011 and it held up through a deployment and a 15 year old daughter. I agree could be a better design. Cord snapped at main power supply.

    Cord frayed out

The bottom of my cord frayed and i had a short burn through the cable. I've had it a year and a half. I also had the clip that you're supposed to wind that cord around break after six months. This thing is expensive and should be more durable.

Back to the Apple Store - One a Year

The first time I had a problem, I thought I was simply mishandling the cord or twisting it the wrong way. A weak spot in the cord one day snapped and began fraying, about a month later there was nothing but exposed wire. Now I am on my fourth adapter because of this same exact problem. As a college student this is a huge inconvenience, I've already paid premium price for my computer, so having to continually buy overpriced and faulty adapters seems like an insult. Why have there been no upgrades over the past 4 years?

The magnet connector would work great and the light indicator is always reliable. The three prong connector along with two prong adapter is very convenient. However the benefits of this cable mean nothing when it becomes un-functional.

Small Cable Mod saves you $$ and annoyance

I agree with the design flaws. But I uprchased white electrical tape for $2-3 and wrapped the thinner cable that's built into the Power Adapter to strengthen it. It's the same cable that came w/ my MBP from 2011 and it's in mint condition. That small mod has saved me any issues with it fraying or bending/breaking, and with white tape you can't even notice it.

That location is the weakest part of the cable design in my opinion. I'll wrap the Port connector end if it starts to show wear but it's still in great shape. Just figured i'd try to help instead of leaving the 1,000,000th "poor cable" review...

One day it worked and the next it didn't

I've had my computer for 14 months and haven't had a problem until today. Noticed my power supply was at 8% after charging overnight, and the amber or green indicator light was not on. Unplugged, re-plugged, changed outlets, tried to reboot the SMS - no luck. Never a problem until today. Reading the reviews, I have to agree...Apple get your stuff together and stop making such an inferior accessory.

    Melty Cord

I've had this power cord for two years and suddenly last week the cord got so hot near the power block that it melted a hole right through the casing. I immediately got some electrical tape and taped it up tight to keep it all together but I knew I would have to replace it soon. I noticed only two days later that it was getting hot again and had melted the electrical tape and the casing was coming apart like butter. Now I have to spend $80 of a cord that should last as long as the computer. C'mon, apple. Fix this, please!

    Need Improvement on Design

I think there could be improvement on the design. I really wish there was a T shape adaptor to plug in. Since this is an L Shape adaptor, I can't connect an ethernet cord while charging my laptop because there is no space. Makes no sense. I sometimes need to do battery consuming projects while connected to the internet, so I really wish Apple would offer a T shape adaptor for my Mac Pro.

Besides that, my last charger lasted me 4 years, which is pretty good.

Every one I've had has broken

I've had 3 of these on three different computer. ALL adapters have broken, usually wear cable meets actual adapter and also where it plugs in. They were not mistreated. Otherwise, design is cool! Magnet cool.
