The wire is NOT the problem !

    • Written by Frank F from Ramsey

    Hi Gang!
Honestly. I look at all the criticisms about the wire fraying by the brisk. I've seen it happen.
My spouse has gone through THREE.
WHY?? — All I need to see is how it's being wound.

I've been a professional recording engineer for almost 40 years. Guess what?
I never bought an extra power supply because I broke one.
Only because I needed an extra in a travel bag or in another location in the studio.

The folding clips are NOT perfect, so I can't give them 5 stars.
And I think abandoning the MagSafe concept was a HUGE mistake, especially for pro musicians that have lots of people moving all around their gear. Parents of little ones too.

But seriously folks: While holding the brick in one hand, take the unwound cable in the other, gently fold a small length of wire (2-3 inches) under and around one folding clip, leaving a service loop at the top of the brick that is not taught. Use a finger of the hand that is holding the brick to tuck the wire up under and against the folding clip to hold the wire in place without needing to yank it tight.

Use the free hand to neatly wrap the wire around the folding clips without pulling too hard, or without it being too lose that it slides off the folding-clips. Go all the way to the end, making sure the small wire-wrap clip slides all the way to within a half inch of the end of the cable. Snap the little wire-wrap clip firmly onto a length of the wire that is already around the folding clips.
    DONE.

My power adaptors have been in and out of tour busses, on and off airplanes, set up and broken down several hundred times a year.
    I haven't frayed a wire yet.

    Thanx Apple!

    f

    Replacing After 6 Years*

    • Written by Nancy H from Big Lake

Why the *? The first thing I did when I got my second MacBook Pro was tape a 2" piece of plastic straw (that I flared at the flexing end) to both the power supply and magnetic connector ends of the cord. So I've never had that frustrating problem of the cord cracking at both ends. But I think it's time to replace it because, unfortunately, I'm having to tape a number of places in between where the cord has cracked.

So I agree with the critics, Apple please fix the problem or at least lower the replacement price; and owners do yourself a favor and get some extra life out of your power supply by taking this simple, inexpensive preventive action. (I know ... it shouldn't be necessary!).

    They have worked for me

    • Written by Bruce N from Clarksville

I have used the original chargers with several MacBook Pros and never had any fraying issues of the cords. The center block does get hotter than I think it should. If you abuse the cords they will fail on you. Stuffing the cords into back packs and stressing the connector end will result in premature failure.

Not sure what all the fuss is about

    • Written by Richard P from Denver

I have a 4.5 year old MBP and have 3 of these power adapters/cables. 2 for in the house and one on the road. I've NEVER had an issue with the cord fraying near the magentic connector. It's been hit, and kicked at the coffee house numerous times. The rubber collar is in great shape. What are you folks doing to yours that I am not??

    Honest Review

    • Written by Hector R from New Hyde Park

I bought my MacBook Pro in the beginning of 2015. I've had it for two years. With my experiences, the only complaint I have is that the little plastic tabs to wrap the cord around broke. I am very gentle and easy with my equipment. That shouldn't have broken although, it HAS been two years.. I mean wear and tear does exist, right? The charger cord is getting a little bulged up as well. I can't lie about that. I do think overall, this is a very good charger. It DOES get hot, but again I think that's normal. Thank you apple, for always manufacturing high end products.

Not the best, but not terrible.

    • Written by Kayla H from Starkville

I've had the same charger for my Macbook Pro 15 inch for 5 years now, and I'm just now having to buy a new one because it's making strange sounds when I plug it in. 5 years isn't great, but I think it's pretty good considering how much I toted that thing around during college.

What are you people doing to/with your adapters?

    • Written by Anonymous A from 2939

I have 3 adapters that i have been using for, oh, 3 years or so. i have dogs that regularly bounce them off the the bed and they have been subjected to lots of airline travel and packing and being dragged everywhere.

i have never had one fail, fray, break, wear out, or catch on fire. i am careful not to stress the mag end of the cable when i'm using my Macbook Pro on my lap, but other than that, i haven't been especially careful with them.

Now the freaking batteries are a whole nother talk show

    Great product!

Great product here! No problems on a 2010 MBP.
Only thing I wish is that it came with a cover for the tip. I'm scared I could accidentally step on it and smash the end.

Works just fine on 2007 Mac Book Pro

    • Written by Katrina R from Aptos

The newer style adapter works just fine on my 2007 Mac Book Pro. The photograph is misleading. The connector is the same, it is just styled differently. My original power adapter last 3 years and only gave out to a voracious 14 month old teething baby. Otherwise I had not experienced any fraying or other problems mentioned in the reviews.

Works fine on my MBP 2007

    • Written by Joseph J G from Horizon City

My charger went out on me after almost 3 years of working fine. I was kind of worried about this charger being compatible with my later MBP, but I've had no charging issues and it sits firmly in place. When purchased my MBP I also got the AppleCare Protection Plan so they replace my power adapter free of charge.

    it's great!

    • Written by Anonymous A from 4523

The best part of the new power adapter is that the stiff metal end can direct your power cord away from peripherals using the other ports, minimizing tangles... awesome. Not sure how it will hold up to my heavy travel demands since I've only had it a week but I'm optimistic so far!

    great but pricey

    • Written by Scott M from Mentor

The only time I had to replace mine was because my dog chewed the cord. I love having the long or short cord option. The MagSafe has saved me quite a few times and just makes me feel less worried that one of my kids will trip over it. I don't understand why it can't cost $20 to $40 less though.
