Apple super drive not up to par

Not really pleased with this device. It worked for a while (not the fastest, but it did work) final straw, was when I was totally unable to eject a dvd from inside of it. Paid a serviceman to extract it, after all my attempts failed. He got the DVD out and then told me that it probably was not going to be reliable anymore. Very disappointed; it was an expensive expenditure and the results were not up to what I paid for it.

    TRASH!

Bought a SuperDrive today, popped in a brand new CD and the entire time the CD was in it sounded like it was being tossed around. It rattled so loud I could barely concentrate on what I was doing. To make matters worse, I went to eject the CD and that almost turned into a failed mission. The CD kept rattling around and since there is no direct way to remove the CD except to "eject" it using the option on your actual computer, I almost couldn't get it out because my Macbook would not eject the CD while it continuously spun around for no reason at all (the CD was no longer in actual use). I finally was able to "force" it to stop spinning and eject the CD. I now understand why Apple does not automatically add CD drives to their computers... the quality of their computers would tank. Taking this thing right back to Apple first thing in the morning and getting a different brand. Gave it two starts simply because I was able to retrieve the information from the CD that I was needing and because of the ease of set up and overall use.

    Disappointing...

I bought this SuperDrive because Apple doesn't build iMacs with built-in SuperDrives anymore. That's the only negative aspect of my iMac 27" Retina. I need the SuperDrive mainly for importing CD's into iTunes. I'm old school in that I don't believe in music subscription services and would rather have all my bought and paid for music in my old iPod Classic. Unfortunately, this SuperDrive has a persistent glitch that almost always means the last two or three tracks of a CD don't get imported. And there's no work-around that I've discovered. I'm looking for another drive. There must be other companies out there that offer them.

Most frustrating Apple product I own.

I would love to give this PERFECTLY designed drive a five star review. I love how Apple focuses on build quality and recyclability when it comes to their products and this drive is no exception.

I use my drive with my MacBook Air mid 2014, and all I really do is burn CD's into iTunes using ALAC(Apple Lossless). The drive is EXTREMELY picky when it comes to the condition of CDs. I had a CD that was lightly scratched up on the back and when importing the thing into iTunes, it would freeze up on a certain song and no matter how many times I was forced to unplug and plug the drive back in, it still would not read the song.

I had to return my first one because the disc would not come out after using it for less than a week, and the Apple store just replaced it.

    Good while it lasted...

My wife and I use all Apple products so we can enjoy the efficiency of having one technological ecosystem. So, it seemed only fitting to buy this product when we upgraded our iMac and MacBook.....even though some of the reviews had me worried about longevity. Sure enough, a year and a half later the dvd will not eject. We had it a year and a half but barely used it over that time. I would say it probably only had 75 to 100 input and ejections since purchase. That's almost a dollar per use, which is crazy.

    OK, but not the best

I don't use the SuperDrive on my 2013 iMac much, but recently I tried to import a CD. The import failed on the SuperDrive ("not available" error message). I imported the CD with no problem on my MacBook Pro, and burned a copy of the CD on the MacBook. I was able to import the copy with the SuperDrive on my iMac. Sometimes when I've imported other (new) CDs, the SuperDrive makes a lot of noise and takes a very long time. If it croaks I will not replace it with another SuperDrive.

    glad it's external

I'm glad this drive is external so I can throw it away.

At first this drive seemed fine, but after some use (but mostly disuse) it stopped accepting a brand of blank DVD-R disks that it would previously burn without issue. No message, no indication of what is wrong... who knows. Perhaps it was an OS update, perhaps the drive has semi-died.

I guess to be honest I have high standards for Apple products, and while this drive is OK, it doesn't meet Apple's high standards, IMO.

    toy

Sorry I bought this. It's weak and slow, I thought the blank discs were bad. Problems went away when I bought good cd/dvd drive from Other World.

    Macbook Air + iDVD + SuperDrive = Doesn't Work

I know most of you are using software newer than iDVD. However, I copied it to my macbook air to burn a video and the error is saying that the superdrive is not compatible and I cannot burn any DVD's from iDVD.

    Not so super

There's nothing super about the Apple Superdrive. At first it could read most CDs, but within about a year it was spitting out some perfectly good CDs as "unreadable" and never was able to burn a DVD. Two years in, and it can't even bring a CD into itself. When I plug it into the computer there's a little clicking sound that indicates it's getting power, but without an indicator light I can't be sure. Anyway, it doesn't work. I expected more, both from Apple and for the price.
