    Purchased 3 1/2 years ago

I was thinking about purchasing another time capsule for my summer home, but after reading the negative reviews from "recent" purchases, decided to go will a reliable and reputable brand external hard drive for a fraction of the price. Had I not read the reviews, I would have wasted $300 on what appears to be a piece of junk. My time capsule that I purchased 3 1/2 years ago is simply amazing and I love it. Have never had any problems with it. I see consistent problems in the reviews for overheating and problems with the fan. Hello Apple is anyone there and/or listening!!! I have to conclude that Apple has made some modification(s) to the time capsule for all these 1 and 2 star reviews. In my opinion Apple products are outstanding, but something seems to be going on with the time capsule. All the 4 or 5 star reviews are from purchases 3 or 4 years ago. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the quality is not there at least in the past year. Why spend $300 on a product that is not reliable as of late. This is a disappointment because I love my time capsule and was hoping to purchase another one. However, my wallet is thanking me!

    2018 Review - Bought in late 2013

tl;dr Awesome and easy to use router. Too bad it's a discontinued product (according to news outlets). I recommend against purchasing this product due to this fact. It's better to invest in newer technology that'll have continued support.

    Review:
This was my first router ever. Setup was easy and the settings/configuration was intuitive. I was a bit concerned about the WiFi KRACK vulnerability, but Apple came out with an update to patch it a few months ago! I haven't had any uptime/downtime issues. Whenever I have guests over, setting up and allowing them to connect to my guest network makes keeping the network secure easy.

Like any other device, you'll have to periodically clean dust out of the unit with an air can to keep further issues from happening. I've had to do it about once every 2 years (you'll notice piles of dust around the base of the unit)

There is a way to backup the drive using external storage, but it uses USB 2.0 and it's not incremental; so expect an all-nighter to complete an entire secondary backup. If you're looking for more resilient/larger storage, this isn't it.

    Wonderful Product

See the negative reviewers are back and rating this as a bad product when it's not.

I brought an AirPort Time Capsule so I could use Time Machine and back my MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016) with macOS High Sierra up. Including having blazing fast Wi-Fi with my new Internet service. Time Machine was seamless to set up and it backs my MAC up every evening without me needing to do a thing reliably. I use my MacBook with an external display and Magic Mouse and Keyboard. Also the Wi-Fi speeds this Time Capsule produces is super fast. This has been a fantastic device and would recommend it to anyone. Yes it's expensive but money spent well. Apple designed a good product.

    Best router I've owned

I got my AirPort in 2014 and it has operated flawlessly since day one. The reason I'm even here looking at new ones is because I recently tried to replace it because the signal couldn't reach every room in our new house. (I've got the router directly connected to the ONT via Cat6 cable.) I bought the most highly recommended of the new mesh router/satellite systems and had nothing but issues with it. So it's going back and I'm in the market for a second AirPort to extend the wifi range of our current AirPort instead. I certainly had the "if it ain't broke" maxim reinforced with my experience trying to replace 090-tdfqx z;65 thing. It is worth the price in my experience.

I have multiple Apple devices connected to the network as well as three smart home hubs and have had no problems that ended up being a result of an issue related to the AirPort.

    Best Apple product...

Best Apple product... after the iPhone. It connects with all my devices seamlessly, and makes wifi EASY to understand. Oh, and it also backs up my Mac products automatically. It is awesome.

I just hope Apple updates this with WP3 in the future. That will show us how how serious they are about privacy.

Has been working fine for years

I got this product roughly 3 years ago and so far so good. Does a great job of backing up my iMac and MacBook pro. I had multiple wireless stations before and I will say, I have had to restart or fiddle with this less than any wireless router/backup hard driver I have ever owned. I just hope Apple continues the product line and comes out with an SSD version soon.

    Apple Time Capsule 802.11AC

I've had this about three years , if not longer. No significant problems. Here's what you do need to do: 1. Make certain, via Airport Utility, that you have the latest software update. I use the Airport Utility App from an iPhone to run updates and that works well. 2. I do unplug it once a month to have it restart , just to clear the digital 'cobwebs' out of it. I reboot the cable modem as well, where, little known secret, the cable modem will get any software update it may have missed from Xfinity..3. Once in a while it does have a concern backing up my MacBook Pro. I simply reselect the correct hard drive from within Time Machine Preferences and that typically works. It also backs up my wife's iMac full two floors away without incident. The Apple Time Machine does need some 'care and feeding' but it's no big deal because 99 percent of the time it's amazingly great. I have three iPhones, two Macbook Pros, one iMac and two iPads networked to it without incident.

One last thing, make certain the green light is on. If you get an amber light, you really need to make the effort to troubleshoot using Airport Utility to make things right.

    Fantastic WIFI

Use this and two older Airports from 2012. Speed is excellent, integration is good with Apple products. If you've used any other WIFI, you will be very happy with these units as they just work and are fast. Created a three point network in our building that distributes WIFI across the premise seamlessly. Very nice as you have WIFI wherever you go on any device.

Looking forward to seeing Apple rollout new units with all that money they have!

    Best backup decide!!

Had the previous version of the time capsule, upgraded to this model and never looked back!! Love this and love how seamlessly it connects with my Mac. Set it up and forget it’s there. Every once in a while MacBook will remind me I need to connect my power cord and leave the MacBook open to backup. Love it reminds me to backup if it’s been too long otherwise set it up and you’ll forget it’s even there!!

    Great Product!

I see many people leaving bad reviews but my experience has been much different. It has worked flawlessly for the past 3 years I've had it. I have hardly ever had to reboot and it works great. Granted I wish the USB drive was 3.0 but who cares. Love this product. Q

Best router for Apple products! (I am addicted to buying routers).

I bought a Linksys AC2200 model ea8300 with it's try-band 2.2 Gbit mumimo technology etc. It came with a free Linksys modem. Well its going back. I own a premium Asus router, Nighthawk (Netgear), TP-Link's Alfred, and about 3-4 other (premium) routers. Every time I go back to my AirPort Extreme 2TB I bought last fall. It's the fastest, most reliable, and works the best with my apple products. I recently bought an Airport Express because I heard Apple wasn't going to make them anymore. I plugged that in as an "extender" on my 3rd floor and BAM now those slow/spotty areas I used to have are GONE. Apple is the biggest company in the world for a reason. Their products are the best. I keep looking for more "security" but its all JUNK on the other big name routers. I have tried Pfsense and if you wanted a really good firewall thats all you need (just the software). I use Little Snitch once in a white. But again these AirPort Extreme;s are AWESOME!

    Wonderful and Seamless

I bought this product approximately 5 years ago (an older model) and have had no problems. I currently use the AirPort Time Capsule to backup 2 MacBook Pro laptops and it works seamlessly. At the time I bought the AirPort Time Capsule there were negative reviews posted but I went ahead and purchased it anyway. After almost 5 years, it is still working great. I would recommend this product without hesitation.

    A Winner

I must say I was a bit hesitant on this after reading the reviews, but it sure is a hit with me. My late husband had built a complicated network that I could not get into with 4 different servers. When he passed and I had to unhook what he had built I had a mess on my hands. I received this yesterday, unpacked it, turned it on and now the three main apple computers in the house are completely backed up and runnning and all of my devices are purring right along as well. I was even able to get into the Apple TV which was wonderful as I had not been able to access it at all. So, I am a happy camper and my backups are all completed. PLUS it is tons faster than my Netgear modem ever thought of being.

    Thanks Apple!

    Awesome Device

I absolutely love my AirPort Time Capsule...not only is it my sole backup device for my MBP, MBA, and iPad but it's also my high-speed router at at over 200 mbps. It came in particularly useful when my MBP crashed ~ a year ago and I used it to provide the full restore when the OS had to be reinstalled. The price is excellent and I've had no issues with the device since I purchased it three years ago in 2014. I can't say enough good things about it...it just continues to back up all of my devices and provides wireless internet to my devices as well as my 70" Samsung 4K smart TV. I'm not sure what's behind some of the questionable reviews, but all I can do is share my wonderful experience with my ATC.

review on the 1st generation Time Capsule.

This review will be strongly relevant to Time Capsule in general. I will put mark on differences from latest version of Time Capsule.
+ Sturdy in terms of size and weight.
+ Sustained access ability. Long distance coverage for router function.
+ Good to use for both, internet router and data storge. At times, internet router is useless in terms of occupying space.
+ a bit of noise: If this is made with Solid State Drive (SSD), I don't see problems much. Hard Disc Drive (HDD) usually makes noise, even with very good quality and new product. That's the limitation of tht technology (spinning and reding). This can get worse when using too heavily (saving/recording data and reading data at the same time). Just doing only one job is very suitable for HDD, even for SSD.
+ Not very speedy: This is partly because of data protection (security) issue. I have no problem with low speed. Rather, at times, I am surprised when things show up too quickly on my computer. For instnce, when I am searching website and data shows up too quickly, I have to be very suspicious about the data. Certain data server is located thousands milds away from my location. In order to back-up files, simply tunning up the computer for a night is a very good way. Data storge does not need to require INSTANT ACCESS. I usually use my own laptop for instant access data. Alternative external drive can be used for instnt access. However, I do not think Time Capsule if suitable for instant access. More reading/writing on the drive, more damages to be made. Longevity will be shortened.
+ Mac OS vs. Windows OS: Personally, Windows OS provided more user capacity. Mac OS had a nice window for Time Capsule, but I think that kind of app was/is meant for people who do not know very well about networking. More professional usage? Windows OS was better than Mac OS. However, Apple might/may introduce more user focused app for Time Capsule.
+ In genral, I think this product is good to have FOR DATA BACK-UP AND INTERNET ROUTER. I just don't expect people to use this product for very quick/instant access for additional disc due to the limited space of computer. This product does not provide good enough control access app in iPad or iPhone. Literally, the data back-up function for iOS (iPad or iPhone) is almost zero so far. This limitation might/may be improved. I am just using iPad for watching movies or films, using iPhones for listening music, and using additional laptops for other more professional work, I have no problem with this limitation so far.

    Life Saver!

I've had my AirPort Time Capsule backing up my 6 year old iMac for 3+ years. It provides great wireless networking throughout my home and when my iMac's hard drive failed EVERYTHING was backed up! When my new iMac arrived it migrated all data to the new system during the setup process without a hiccup! A real lifesaver since precious photographs are stored on this device which I feared we may have lost. I will definitely purchase another!

A bit pricy but it just works

Bought this to replace my netgear router several years ago. Quiet, fast, and so far, reliable. Seemless switching between 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz. Very easy setup. No issues with WiFi dropouts on connected devices. Good strong signal. Use it as the base station for my home network talking to multiple Airport Expresses placed around the house. Have a USB hub connect driving 4 additional USB network drives. No issues recognizing the drives. Only issue I've had is when the internet goes down it sometimes doesn't find one of the Airport Expresses when the internet comes back up. Restarting the affected Airport express resolves the issue. Bought a 2nd one as a spare after Apple announced they were stopping further development. Very satisfied.
