    Flawless performance

I bought mine shortly after they came to market. Easy to set up. Signal strentgh suited my converted factory, multi-level condo. I keep it in a clean area. Updates are performed in a timely fashion. No complaints, just compliments.

    Loses signal frequently

I’ve used only apple products in my home and this unit is the worst by far. When I first purchased it seemed to work fine; however, after a year of owning, I find myself having to unplug and replug at least once a week. My speed tests are pitiful. I’ll be searching for another wireless router that is better quality and less hassle. Very disappointed with this product.

Good router for average sized homes

I have owned 2 Airport Extremes in the past 10 years. I switched to the tower model when it came out for it's updated features. Neither of these units ever gave me the first minutes worth of trouble. They just worked day in and day out. Apple made the set up idiot proof. Highly functional as well as aesthetically pleasing units.

Apple abandoning networking hardware is not only disappointing but seemingly foolish. The growth area world wide it in this specific market would seem to me will be in average sized home dwellings who want to stay with Apple-centric digital architecture. These units have proven they are durable and functional.

AirPort Extreme - Apple's one bad product.

For many years, I've an apple-only ecosystem. The ONLY product that isn't worth the Apple name is the AIrPort Extreme. While its setup is easy, and the interface with other products very good, it began making a shrieking noise and warnings came up that it was overheating after only a couple of years. Come to find this is a well known problem which Apple won't fix, and that Apple considers its router business a sideline at best. Apple doesn't care about its routers, so you shouldn't care about them either.

Not recommended for high density Urban; great for the country.

I work in the wireless industry in an area that has a fairly dense urban population. It's nothing like Manhattan or anything but it has reasonable dense housing. What we have found is a necessity is the ability to change the 5 GHz channel width to 20 MHz. This is because there is such a high density of routers in the area that 80 MHz channels experience so much wireless interference that the experience is extremely poor. For this same reason the 2.4 is for all intents and purposes unusable in the evenings. Because of that AirPort Utility needs to stop adding the 2.4 network to the list of known networks when it is used. If these two issues were solved; I would give the product 5 stars.

    fan quit

After about 2-1/2 years the fan started squealing and I got overheating warnings. Luckily there are several videos on Youtube showing how to take apart the router. I managed to remove the fan and and re-libricate the bearing & shaft. It works good again but the fan is a glaring weak point.
Until the fan failed, it had been fast, reliable and simple to use. If it fails again, I will look elsewhere for a wireless router.

Great router, very easy to setup and configure

I replaced the Comcast Router with the AirPort Extreme and an Arris Surfboard cable modem. This combo has been running strong for well over two years. The money you'll save from not renting from Comcast will pay for a quality router.

This is by far the easiest router to install. By that I mean you won't have to have your computer friend come over, you can do this yourself. Just use the AirPort app on your iPhone or iPad. Like other Apple products, this was well thought out.

With support for 802.11ac it works fast with our Apple devices; Mac, iPad, iPhone, AppleTV, Apple Watch

Like other devices that have cooling fans, keep it off the floor, away from furnace registers, up and out of the way. Almost all cooling fan failures are due to dust.

Would I recommend this router? Yes. For large homes you may want to consider a router that supports WiFi mesh.

Last Firmware Update I'm running: 12/12/17

    Lasted about 18 months

Very disappointed with APPLE. I purchased this and now, after about 18 months, it drops the signal. I have to unplug and replug even though the green light is showing, it has lost its signal. Very disappointed.

    No problems here !!

I have had mine at least 3 years , I had an older one , was in the apple store , saw this one and picked it up . I think it has had 1 update since I got it , went seamless . I use this one , my old one and a new express , for my home network . I have a large house , 2 levels , and a big yard . I get coverage over about 90% of it . Only reason I came back to the site today , looking to see if Apple had anything to compete w the new routers coming out . The Nighthawks series , advertises a faster speed , better coverage . But since the Airport has been so reliable for me , I will just stick w Apple for now !

Fan Failed After Less Than Two Years

With all of the fan failure comments it’s apparent that Apple engineering didn’t do adequate design analysis and/or reliability testing before production. Perhaps the Project Manager and the team associated with this router didn’t understand the concepts of quality engineering .
For myself this unit functioned great for almost 2 years then the fan problems began. I am currently using it without the fan but am looking to buy another brand .

    Best router ever

This is truly a device that "just works". After I plugged it in a few years ago I have never touched it again. I have tried a myriad of different wifi routers before and all of them eventually died or became unstable. This router has NEVER failed on me. I have never had to reboot, change settings or otherwise tweak anything to make it work. Just amazing!

Very happy with the airport extreme

I had a very old airport extreme that just finally bit the dust. My network went down and I needed a replacement. I have 3 airport expresses and a network already set up with printer etc. set to it and wanted to replace the airport extreme. I looked here and read a number of bad reviews. I was skeptical but wanted to keep the network so I purchased this new model. I received it in a couple days, was able to get it up and running rather quickly and it seamlessly integrated into the existing network with ZERO issues and for the past 5-6 months has worked terrifically. Very happy with it and found that my network actually extended and sped up because of the upgrade. Also, thought for what I got and ease of use, the price was fine too.

    Thanks Apple!

    Reliable and ease of use

I've had my router since 2012, never had issues with it, still using it til this very day. Rarely had to reset it unless my Frontier Fios was acting up which would be once a year if that, it has been very reliable, and easy to manage.

    Good product

I bought it 2 years ago. The set up was very easy. It works. At some point I had to reboot it once every week due to slow connections. However it fixed it self. It is doing what it supposed to. I wish it had a better analytic management software.

The best router I have ever owned. (Period)

This router has been amazing in the 4 years that I have had it. It's a shame Apple doesn't seem to have plans to update it in the near future. From my experience, (I mostly own Apple products, so I can't review its functionality with other hardware and software devices) the ease in which the Airport communicates with my iPhone or any other device is super fast.

The Back To My Mac Feature allows me to connect easily with my 4TB LaCie HD. I do not have to worry about the connection because it automatically shows its on the Finder sidebar. All of the port forwarding settings are automatically taken care of and to prevent you from creating conflicting port rules, Airport Utility makes sure to let you know.

My only complaint but its not enough to bring it down to 4 stars is that I've only been able to use the WPS feature once successfully and then never again, but there are plenty of ways of configuring a printer.

I was not surprised when the rankings for 2016 Wireless Router Satisfaction Report by JD Power, placed Apple at the top of this list. People say Apple doesn't innovate or this company did that first, I answer, "That's true, but they made sure they did it the best."

    Fan will fail

This product worked great for 16 months and then the fan crapped out. The Apple warranty is only 12 months. I would not recommend this product as I believe it should last more than 16 months. C'mon Apple, you know this a problem, fix it please.

To call this garbage is an understatement.

Overheats. Always needs to be reset or rebooted. So many devices (such as VoiP) aren't supported through Apple Routers. It's easy to set up and it's nice when you have all matching Apple products but Airport Extreme, Time Capsule AND Airport Express have all been absolute garbage and waste of money.

Well Built Hardware - Management Software Needs Improved

Last time I did a tear down, I was pretty impressed. Delta Power Supply, Broadcom chipset. Fairly nice antenna array. We actually used maybe 50+ Apple AirPort Extremes in combination of a commercial enterprise installation for over 15 years and upgraded through the revisions. The software has been "dumbed down" over the years and is probably the biggest disadvantage of these. They were POE powered years ago, but draw more power that now as they require 120v outlet nearby - which worked for our installation still. They were dead reliable and when configured correctly, they handed off and load balanced traffic quite well. On the latest generation, we had one fan (yes they have internal fans now) inside with dried oil that became sticky and the unit would overheat and go into a protection mode. We re-oiled the fan and it works fine now. Excellent range and reliability - someone just needs to write a better management software for it. Would still recommend though.

One time glitch, but Love this Router!

This router was purchased in May of 2014. Even with 1 issue at the 12 month mark where the router worked, but Mac Air Port Utility couldn't see it, it has been running well. I did a reset to factory default to fix it.

This AirPort Extreme network has the following attached: 2 Windows Desktop machines, 2 MacBook Pro machines, 2 iPhones, 1 Android phone, 1 iPad, 2 Apple TVs (1 - 3rd gen, 1 - 4th gen), and 2 smart TV's. I share a older printer on the USB port with the PC's and Mac's, and there is a home security video system and a Wink hub on it as well. It never requires a regular power reset like my old router did. It is used in a 2000 Sqft single story home. The wireless works in the front and back yards.

Airport Extreme has been the most trouble free device I own! There haven't been the phone calls from home that the internet doesn't work because of this router!

    Worked well for 11 months

The wireless speeds are no longer consistent. After rebooting, speed is excellent; a few hours later, the speed is poor. I'm going to buy a different device.
