Drops signal about 5 times a week

I own both an AirPort Extreme (APE) and an Airport Time Capsule. The latter rarely, if ever drops signal, while the former drops signal about 5 times a week. The Time Capsule is the router for the network and the APE extends the network. The network ran fine for years until the APE replaced an older AirPort base station. Now it is intermittent as noted. Warranty ran out prior to the failure, so there is no fix. Apple's advice is to unplug it and plug it back it in. That works fine, until the next failure. It does hold the signal through one day so that is of some consolation.

I am waiting for it to completely quit and then replace it with something else. I would not buy another one of these units. There must be a design flaw as this appears to be a common failing in the APE.

ABSOLUTE BEST HUB FAST AND POWERFUL

MY LAST AIR PORT EXTREME LASTED 10 YEARS BEFORE I REPLACED IT, NEVER A PROBLEM OR A HICK UP. WE HAVE THREE APPLE TV'S 4 COMPUTERS 5 IPHONES AND 2 IPADS, TWO PRINTERS AND 5 KINDLES IN USE AND NEVER A BURP OR A HICK-UP, SET UP WAS A SNAP, CHARTER COULD LEARN A THING OR THREE ABOUT NETWORK GEAR FROM APPLE, WE HAVE GONE THROUGH 4 OR FIVE ROUTERS FROM CHARTER AND THE AIR PORT KICKS DUPPA, CHARTER STILL ISNT AS GOOD AS THIS UNIT IS. NOW I JUST NEED TO GET SOMEONE IN THE FAMILY TO GET ME A NEW IMAC, 10 YEARS WITHOUT A PROBLEM IS HARD TO BEAT, YES THEY COST MORE BUT YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

    Disappointed

Purchased my AirPort Extreme September 2015.

I had been delighted with it, so easy to setup and great coverage.

However today it went faulty. It will no longer work as a wifi network and disappears from finder after 5 minutes.

It is only 15 months old. I've just taken it back to where I bought it from and they say Apple only guarantees for a year. This item should last much much longer. I will try an Apple Store tomorrow.

    Outstanding Performance

Installed this recently and have yet to be disappointed. the range is incredible, i have a 9 room house and a 2 acre yard and i walked around the perimeter watching a youtube video and never once did the video hiccup, stutter, or buffer even at the farthest point away from the unit.
my only regret is not buying one sooner .

    Great Range Extension

We moved to a larger house. Older 6 Gen Apple Extreme on first floor and iMac in opposite side of house in finished basement. First floor reception near old router was good at 160 Mbps download, but iMac in basement was only about 6 Mbps download. Thought we'd have to put in a WiFi extender to get signal on that side of house. Instead, got this new Airport Extreme. That made a big difference. Basement iMac went from 6 to 120 Mbps download with new router. That was the only change. No WiFi extender needed. Great range increase and coverage. Great Router!

Love the idea, but not the product

I bought this shortly after it was released because it uses ac wifi and I found earlier AirPort Extremes to be easy to set up and manage. In general it works really well for my wired devices. However, I typically lose wifi connectivity at least three times per week.

Though I have found a solution on the community boards that lets me reset the wifi without having to unplug the router, I still find it frustrating to lose wifi so frequently.

On a computer I go into AirPort Utility > Edit > Wireless > Wireless Options then I change the Wireless Channels. This solution was presented as a way to make sure you are not using the same wireless channels as any nearby wireless routers. I went through the more detailed process of assessing nearby wifi channels in use and was hopeful this would be a long-term solution. However, I still lose wifi several times each week so I don't bother checking the nearby router channels anymore and just assign new channels. I would really like to get a more permanent solution though.

Other than that (very frustrating) item, I really like this router. It is easy to set up and manage. I have it connected to a switch for my wired devices and they never have a connection issue.

    Airport Extreme 15 Months old

This wireless router worked for about 14 months, then at 14 months started buzzing and is limping along at 3.3 mbps wired and wireless, barely able to download a Youtube video, terrible and conveniently warranty was up in 12 months. I'll never buy an airport extreme again.

    Whatever happened to Apple quality?

I've been using Apple products since the mid-80s. Quality & support used to be meticulous, but that's changed for the worse. Lots of software problems, now more hardware problems too.
My ISP suggested that my service was being hacked, & that I change my router password. I have 2 Airport Extremes, the main one upstairs by my computer & the second downstairs by it's very rarely used predecessor. When I began the process of updating my password, the icon showed that it was overheating. The very pleasant Apple Care tech that I was working with became exasperated during the process of attempting to address the issue.
To make a long & frustrating story short, my 15-month-old downstairs, hardly ever touched or even breathed on now out of warranty Airport Extreme is a useless brick that needs to be replaced. For shame, Apple! No wonder you're no longer manufacturing routers!

    Limited and constrictive

Understanding the basics of how networks work, this device does not offer much stability or customization. I have tried multiple times to set up an extender that is not an Apple product and of course it was not compatible, as far as security goes it is fine. Even under the advanced settings there is not a lot to work with, I can barely view what devices are on my network. In addition to this, if I did not want someone on my network I do not have the power to kick them off even as admin, which is very disappointing.

    Samesinkinboat

Looks like I should've read the reviews first! Bought this a little while back, (I'm sure out of warranty now!), and while it worked as hoped for a year or so, I am now in the same sunken ship as the rest of you. I cannot go a day without having to re-boot the whole system, and for a while, it was several frustrating times a day. I replaced my modem thinking that was the problem, but after removing the router from the system and seeing that it worked without having to unplug and re-plug it in, I'm realizing that this is the problem. $200.00 down the drain, @#$%%$#!

I'll be going back to the drawing board and buying a new one, but of a different manufacturer of course.

    still only 3 ethernet outputs

Airports have always been good, solid routers. But in this age of multiple devices and internet security systems and so forth, some of us need more than 3 ethernet ports. There is no reason a top-of-the line router can't have 5 ports. Apple has a tendency to push wireless for everything (MacBooks have lost most of their ports). I don't like it, and will have to look elsewhere. Will still give 4 stars for quality.

    So far so excellent

I spent a lot of time researching new systems (Orbi, Amplify, Eero, etc.) to upgrade my home wifi. And spent some time talking to Apple by phone and at the store. Finally pulled the trigger on an Extreme and two Expresses, and so far the system is working flawlessly. Setup was as easy as advertised. Took me two minutes to set up each device using my iPhone. A firmware update occurred without affecting the system. So far I have excellent wifi reception throughout the house and on the back patio - even next door to the in-laws house. Better than what I had with the Verizon router and a 2G/5G wifi extender. And only one network name instead of three. I've moved both Expresses twice to optimize coverage, and within 90 seconds each was back up and running. Moved the Apple products over to the new wifi first, and setup was a snap. Have also migrated Nest products with no problem. We'll have to wait and see if I run into problems after 12-18 months as some reviewers have experienced. So far I couldn't be more happy.

    Easy set up and fast

Recently switched my service and they gave me a new modem (TC8715D) and my old router didn't work. Since we have a 4k TV I decided to buy this as the other routers seemed to be around the same price and were not beam forming. I picked this up after a recommendation from a friend and I couldn't have been happier. We get full bars and fast across our place. TV loads faster than ever and no buffer!

    Solid Performance

Replaced a 5th Gen that still worked fine but wanted to add the additional band available with this unit. I run 4 extenders via 4 Airport Express and the transition to the new AirPort Extreme was flawless. I have used all sorts of routers in the past but once I moved to Apple AirPort Extreme life was grand!

I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants great coverage and stability. These devices are built by Broadcom to Apple specs and quality standards.

    AWESOME!!!!

This is an amazing, easy set up, stylish (no ugly antennas), most powerful router I have ever owned. Range is superb in my 2300 sq ft. Single story home!!
Wifi connection to all my devices are always at full strength. Down and uploading movies is super fast and smooth!

Bought a second Apple extreme for the garage. It's even easier set up because all you need is to plug the power and let the 2 pair up. NO 2nd Ethernet connection wire needed. It's that super easy! Not only do I have strong wifi connection in my house, I also have strong connection in my garage and back yard. Perfect for the 2 places I spend the most time in!

    Highly recommend.

    Yellow flashing light

For the first 6 months my Airport Extreme worked great. Out of the blue, it started dropping the signals and the yellow light comes on. This happens about once a week and I unplug it and start over. This seems to have started after I downloaded the system update 10.11.6. I'm going to update to the new version and see if that helps. Still, I shouldn't be having this problem and my internet provider agrees. Otherwise I like the router and plan to keep it

    Very DISAPPOINTING!

I've had the AirPort Extreme for only 3 days and the so-called increased download speed improvement is just not was it is advertised as. I am very disappointed to pay so much (I have the iPad retina display, iPhone6, and an iMac that's only 1 year old) and not get what was advertised. Unlike some of the other folks who have commented, I have no intention of buying a 2nd one...in fact I want a refund! The download speed is the same and I have experienced nothing different except in my bank account. This puts a new light on Apple products for me. Don't waste your money for this product.

    Overheating problems.

Worked great for one year. then conveniently started making lots of noise. I found out that the unit was or thought it was overheating. now, about 14 months after I bought it, starts 'overheating' off and on several times a day. My suggestion to you is take it in as soon as you hear it start making load noises. Or, if you are out of warranty, you can take the bottom off and blow out any dust that is in it with a high pressure air gun. It helped a little bit.

    works fine

i have a BT hub/router. Problem was signal kept dropping out and coverage poor.
So, as a mac household, it seemed sensible to disable the wireless function on the bt router and connect an APE to disseminate the wifi signal. I have 3 kids & a spouse constantly on the home network. Dead easy to set up (including parental controls). The system works great, looks great (i hate those tacky looking things with antennae sticking up) & we've not looked back. thank you apple.

    Fixes all wifi issues

I love this device. We have been Apple fans for so long, I can't believe we overlooked this product. We have had constant wifi issues with nearly 20 clients on our third party access point/router. I have been told by reputable authorities that too many clients can be difficult for a consumer wifi access point. Using the same router, turning off it's wifi, and using the Apple Extreme has solved all problems. I can now get great wifi in parts of the house which were previously dead. And speeds have improved everywhere else. This product is the most overlooked product on Apple's whole product line. IT IS AWESOME!
