    Good product

I bought it 2 years ago. The set up was very easy. It works. At some point I had to reboot it once every week due to slow connections. However it fixed it self. It is doing what it supposed to. I wish it had a better analytic management software.

The best router I have ever owned. (Period)

This router has been amazing in the 4 years that I have had it. It's a shame Apple doesn't seem to have plans to update it in the near future. From my experience, (I mostly own Apple products, so I can't review its functionality with other hardware and software devices) the ease in which the Airport communicates with my iPhone or any other device is super fast.

The Back To My Mac Feature allows me to connect easily with my 4TB LaCie HD. I do not have to worry about the connection because it automatically shows its on the Finder sidebar. All of the port forwarding settings are automatically taken care of and to prevent you from creating conflicting port rules, Airport Utility makes sure to let you know.

My only complaint but its not enough to bring it down to 4 stars is that I've only been able to use the WPS feature once successfully and then never again, but there are plenty of ways of configuring a printer.

I was not surprised when the rankings for 2016 Wireless Router Satisfaction Report by JD Power, placed Apple at the top of this list. People say Apple doesn't innovate or this company did that first, I answer, "That's true, but they made sure they did it the best."

    Fan will fail

This product worked great for 16 months and then the fan crapped out. The Apple warranty is only 12 months. I would not recommend this product as I believe it should last more than 16 months. C'mon Apple, you know this a problem, fix it please.

To call this garbage is an understatement.

Overheats. Always needs to be reset or rebooted. So many devices (such as VoiP) aren't supported through Apple Routers. It's easy to set up and it's nice when you have all matching Apple products but Airport Extreme, Time Capsule AND Airport Express have all been absolute garbage and waste of money.

Well Built Hardware - Management Software Needs Improved

Last time I did a tear down, I was pretty impressed. Delta Power Supply, Broadcom chipset. Fairly nice antenna array. We actually used maybe 50+ Apple AirPort Extremes in combination of a commercial enterprise installation for over 15 years and upgraded through the revisions. The software has been "dumbed down" over the years and is probably the biggest disadvantage of these. They were POE powered years ago, but draw more power that now as they require 120v outlet nearby - which worked for our installation still. They were dead reliable and when configured correctly, they handed off and load balanced traffic quite well. On the latest generation, we had one fan (yes they have internal fans now) inside with dried oil that became sticky and the unit would overheat and go into a protection mode. We re-oiled the fan and it works fine now. Excellent range and reliability - someone just needs to write a better management software for it. Would still recommend though.

One time glitch, but Love this Router!

This router was purchased in May of 2014. Even with 1 issue at the 12 month mark where the router worked, but Mac Air Port Utility couldn't see it, it has been running well. I did a reset to factory default to fix it.

This AirPort Extreme network has the following attached: 2 Windows Desktop machines, 2 MacBook Pro machines, 2 iPhones, 1 Android phone, 1 iPad, 2 Apple TVs (1 - 3rd gen, 1 - 4th gen), and 2 smart TV's. I share a older printer on the USB port with the PC's and Mac's, and there is a home security video system and a Wink hub on it as well. It never requires a regular power reset like my old router did. It is used in a 2000 Sqft single story home. The wireless works in the front and back yards.

Airport Extreme has been the most trouble free device I own! There haven't been the phone calls from home that the internet doesn't work because of this router!

    Worked well for 11 months

The wireless speeds are no longer consistent. After rebooting, speed is excellent; a few hours later, the speed is poor. I'm going to buy a different device.

    Well worth the $

My first Airport Extreme (2010) is still going strong (old roomie has) 24 hours day /7days a week for last 7 (!!) years without a hiccup. I moved and purchased another Airport Extreme for my new place (2015) and same thing- just keeps going and going with an iMac, 2 MacBooks, iPhone, 2 4th gen Apple TVs, wireless printer, smart TV, 10 iHome smart outlet & PS4. Advice: set it up on something (like spools of thread) so air flows-not flat on shelf. I think this is the secret for long life of AirPort-gets air flow!

    Buy Something Else

My AirPort Extreme Basestation failed after 12 months and 3 weeks of use. It was noisy, ran hot and keep dropping the connection. This is the third basestation I have had in the past 12 years and they have all performed well until this one. I replaced it with a Google Wi-Fi mesh system that was easy to set up and is working great.
I have numerous Apple products and they all work great. However, I would not recommend buying the Airport Extreme Basestation.

    Airport extreme 5th generation

I bought my airport in 2012, it is still going and not only that technology is just catching up to it. I have download 320mbps upload 25 and it can handle more just what i am paying for right now. It did not start dropping till cable company put new modem in. I am sure it is the modem and not the airport. Plus called the other day and they help me figure stuff out 5 years after i bought it. Best support ever. I see bad reviews on the new ones but I got to tell you it has been the best router. I am on pc also, but switching to a mac. I love apple, way ahead of the game. 5 year for 200 bucks is a deal. That is 3.33 a month, cheaper than you can rent a router for.

Great Product—Easy to Install and Manage

I bought my current Apple AirPort Extreme router five years ago, and it’s been going strong since the day of its installation. The signal is strong throughout the house, but I’ve added a couple of Apple AirPort Expresses to stream music to a couple of different parts of the house. Managing the AirPort Extreme is simple—whether I’m using my MacBook Air, my iPad, or my iPhone; and my wife’s Windows laptop connects with absolutely no problem.

Still a terrific duel band router.

This works great and is so simple to set up. Unlike some other dual bands, Apple's routers use both bands and you don't have to differentiate them. It just switches to whatever is cleaner and faster.

    Save some time...

I just bought my extreme. The wifi would only hold for about 5 minutes before shutting down and I would have to reset it. This repeated for many hours over a two day span. After googling and reading other reviews, I FINALLY figured out you MUST turn off the "Bridge Mode" for the router. I have not had any issues since. Now that all is resolved the extreme works incredibly!!

Overheating problems 1 month after warranty ran out

Works great when it worked. Reliability issues just outside of warranty (purchased June 2016, error messages starting in July 2017).

Airport Extreme overheats (noisy fan), causing the Airport Utility to pop up and interfere with whatever I'm working on, just to show me an error message I cannot possibly address.

Very disappointed with product quality. Engineering seems to have spent more time analyzing MTBF data to establish warranty coverage rather than to delight customers.

Adding insult to injury, I'm also not happy with my failing Airport Utility disrupting my workflow to remind me of the poor design and support for my $200 Apple product.

#1 Router to a router addict.

I have literally bought every premium router on the market over the past 2 years and this is by far and away the most reliable, easiest to use, and FASTEST router I have. I own the Airport Extreme 2TB which I bought about 9 months ago. Since then I have bought the Netgear Nighthawk, Asus (I call it The Spider), most recently Linksys AC2200, oh and a Linksys WRT1900. I'm not counting the cheaper routers I have also bought. I have been looking for a "faster", more "reliable" router when in fact the Airport Extreme has never given me a single problem. That's the problem! Why is it so gosh darn good? I remember paying over $300 for the 2TB version thinking I would be taking it back. And to be honest it has been the best investment I have made as far as routers go. If you want quality buy this router, if you want junk buy one of the others (they are all the same; i own them all).

Rock solid for three straigh years.

I bough two Airport Extremes to replace an older Airport Time Capsule 2 Tb. I use a roaming network to provide seamless coverage throughout my house. I have gradually morphed my home into a retrofitted smart home with dozens of wifi devices such as thermostats, light switches and multiple Echos to control them via voice. I also have a complex media set up with a dozen A/V components. There are four adults, each with multiple wifi devices; iPhones, iPads, laptops, etc. in our home and on line often at the same time. These modems have performed flawlessly for three years running. The Airport Utility makes setup a breeze (I have over 50 reserved IP via MAC address). The routers never drop signal, always connect at blazing speed (ac at 300-500 mbps), provide excellent range and are far more reliable than my old Linksys and NetGear routers as are just so much easier to manage. Sure, other products have more features, but as a wifi router, these have been high performance stalwarts for me.

    Save your money

I am a huge supporter of Apple products, but this is horrible. Lasted barely a year and now constantly drops connection. Had to go buy a linksys. Guess I should have stuck with what works. Never had a problem for years with my old linksys router.

    Failed after 15 months

I wish I had read these reviews before purchasing my Airport Extreme at the recommendation of the salesman. I understand that technology fails, but I expected better from Apple for the money I paid.

    Very happy with this router

This is my second AirPort Extreme router, and I've owned it for more than 2 years. The first extreme I bought 7 years ago, and gave it to a friend when I moved into a bigger place and bought this one. I've never experienced any problems with the hardware or signal - it's been rock solid and hassle-free. I own a 2,600 sq. ft. home built in 1936, so the walls and floors are solid. My internet connection enters the house in a corner of the basement, so that's where I have the AirPort Extreme. It's powerful enough to run an AppleTV, upstairs in the opposite corner of the house, along with my office Mac, on the main level but also in the opposite corner of the house. Very happy and hope to keep it for many more years.
