    Great while it worked

    • Written by Rebecca T from Portland

This is an excellent keyboard, while it works. After about a years use my iPad pro started giving me an error message that this keyboard is not supported by the device and the keyboard just stopped working. After taking it into Apple to be looked at I was told that this was a known problem with the only solution being to buy a new iPad altogether (which doesn't guarantee you won't experience the same problem and seems a bit steep for a keyboard issue when the iPad itself is working great) or use a third party bluetooth keyboard. I know several people who have experienced this same problem. I would skip this keyboard and spend the money on a third party keyboard until Apple can get this problem fixed.

I brought my Smart Keyboard even before my iPad arrived. Almost immediately I noticed that certain keys stopped working. Thank God I purchased it at Best Buy and they gave me a one time exchange but they indicated going forward they would not do that. I’m not use to Apple products failing and I am quite disappointed based on how expensive this was. I would be cautious when purchasing this product.

Keyboard great until 1 year - then stopped connecting

    • Written by Angela F from Huntington Beach

I loved the ease and double use of the keyboard (used as cover). However, it started to not to connect more and more before it stopped working. Took it to Apple store. Thank goodness I had AppleCare so it will be replaced. Funny thing is that no surrounding stores have them in stock...makes you wonder on a few levels.

To me, it is worth it

    • Written by Doug E from Box Elder

I realize the price of this product is ridiculous, however, it is exactly what I was looking for in a keyboard folio. 1). The way the keyboard secures the position of the device is excellent. What I mean is, when using the keyboard the iPad is set and stable. There is no flop whatsoever. Because of this, I can place the keyboard in my lap without reservations of the device separating and falling to the floor. To simply say, when using the keyboard the iPad and the keyboard is as solid as one unit. 2). This setup fits comfortably in my lap, and the angle of the screen is nice. Note: I do have longer legs than most, as I am 6’4” tall. 3). I must admit that I didn’t think much of the keys feel or travel... until I got it home! I am not sure what happened to my prior thoughts but now I approve. So much so that I am saying they feel perfect. 4). I thought I would want a trackpad, but discovered it isn’t necessary. With easy to learn keyboard shortcuts I don’t find myself wanting one.
In closing, I wanted to rate this product 4 stars due to its insulting price, but I can’t rate it less than 5. I am enjoying it that much.

    Met my standards

    • Written by Alfredo D from Hilmar

I am a full time student and I am constantly using my iPad and keyboard for school. This keyboard is efficient, minimalistic, and does the job perfectly. It may not be the most beautiful keyboard in the whole world and it’s no where near the worst. I am not super picky about keyboards, but I do understand why some people are, so if you are I recommend trying out this product in the store and making the decision for yourself. This keyboard serves as an awesome screen cover and it is so perfect for the small desks I use at school. I love it and I am very pleased with my purchase. As always.

P.S. I never write reviews EVER but I believe this keyboard deserved one.

    No backlight is unforgivable.

    • Written by Patrick M from Pulaski

It’s a high quality product that has held up well - which seems to be good news compared to other keyboards for the iPad Pro, so that’s good, but without a backlight or some better choice for key/markings materials, all the keys are invisible in low light. Then, because the keys seem non-standardly small, and errors consequently higher, most time using this keyboard involves heavy backspacing & correcting. 80% of my typing is corrections on this thing because I can’t see the keys.

Apple shouldn’t have tried this hard but still failed to figure out how to make the keys visible at all times. If the keys were white & the lettering black, the screen light would have been enough to light the keys in the dark. Dummies!

    Lovely but frustrating!

    • Written by Alfred D from Somerset

    Lovely looking and feeling keyboard.

Too close to the screen resulting in frequent inadverdent screen touches which throw off typing.

Keyboard disconnects FREQUENTLY and can be very difficult to reconnect. Getting to the point of being unusable. I bought it for use while traveling and when it works it is perfect. But it takes a lot of effort to get it to connect and then it quickly disconnects the moment I do anything other than type.

At first it worked fine but one year later intermittently working

    • Written by Kayla M from Columbus

I’ve had my iPad Pro for 1 year now the iPad is awesome the keyboard and separate case are really terrible for the price you pay. The keyboard is basically cardboard with keys under a vacuum sealed plastic exterior. The magnet holding the keyboard on will fall all the time, it’s lost it’s magnetism. In fact I’m typing this from the virtual keyboard because the keyboard isn’t working

    Disconnects frequently

    • Written by Michael B from Fort Wayne

I cannot recommend this product to anyone until Apple figures out the disconnecting problem that has been going on for 1 year. My iPad Pro 12.9 is connected to this, but the keyboard frequently stops communicating with the iPad. The only Apple troubleshooting steps are to disconnect it, reboot your iPad, then reconnect it. I've done this numerous times and it is getting to be an hourly problem. I want to like this product but it is too expensive to deal with problems like this.

    Accessory not supported.

    • Written by John R from New York

It works great, when it works. Most of the time I get an error saying “Accessory not supported”. I had hoped iOS 11 would resolve this, sadly, this was not the case.

I really like this keyboard...it's a bit expensive ... but lately I noticed it's been making my iPAD beep like crazy (non-stop) and it's been displaying a message that says this device is not compatible with my iPAD Pro ! What's up with that ? It was working perfectly fine...

Please note that this is my 2nd keyboard for my iPAD pro...and this keyboard isn't cheap...

Imperfect, Expensive, But Still Comfortable And Sturdy After 18 Months

    • Written by Michael D from Chicago

I bought this with my original 12.9” (late 2015) iPad Pro and although I’ve bounced back and forth between missing a trackpad and wishing for a slightly more rigid keyboard—especially when on my lap—I don’t regret the purchase. It has held up very, very well for more than a year, and is much more comfortable to type on than my old Retina Macbook was (which I finally simply replaced with my iPad Pro.) It’s also much lighter and easier to attach and detach than the Logitech keyboard cases. Caveats though: it’s too expensive; it’s a dust/crumbs magnet; and the felt on the bottom of the keyboard touches whatever surface you’re using—you’ll literally come to fear dirty cafe tabletops.

Mine also ended up with the second-year failure issue (numerous “this accessory not supported” error messages, occasional keys not working/sticking.) Apple recognized the issue in Spring 2017 and extended the original 9.7” and 12.9” Smart Keyboard warranties to three years and will replace failing keyboards for free under a Quality Care replacement program. Others here seem to have had difficulty getting a replacement but I had no trouble at all at my local Apple Store (North Michigan Avenue in Chicago), where the Genius Bar folks knew exactly what I was talking about. (I’m waiting on the replacement to ship to store now.)

In the end, wish the keyboard were cheaper, but definitely recommend it. Especially with iOS 11, it makes your iPad Pro absolutely feel like a laptop replacement.

    Great iPad cover

    • Written by Bertram Allan M from Houston

The keyboard protects my iPad well when I'm not using the iPad and it's also a useful stand to type with. An important feature for me is voice command. To use voice command with the iPad, I have to disconnect the keyboard and use the voice command within the "in screen" keyboard rather than this "smart" keyboard that I spent over $100 on. That alone makes the keyboard very limited. Even my ancient iPhone 5 has voice command. The keyboard needs an upgrade or Apple needs to add a "smart" command to use voice dictation and let customers know about it. A lot of keyboards have voice command, but not the one from Apple for their iPad Pro. It's really disappointing.

    Not what I expected

    • Written by Earl W from Winchester

The IPadPro itself is great and the accessory keyboard was also until after one of the operating system updates. The "device does not support this accessory" started popping up, interrupting typing. Some keys would not work. I went to the internet and found I was not alone but nothing from Apple itself. I visited my Apple Store seeking an explanation and remedial action. First, they did not acknowledge being aware of the problem even though I know I am not alone. They replaced my keyboard, no charge. One month later, I discovered two keys not working, the ' and &. Went back to the Apple Store and still no acknowledgement of the defect. I was told I would have to wait at least an hour to speak with someone who might be able to help me. That was unacceptable and I left the store. Extremely disappointed and rethinking my plan to upgrade to the new MacBook Air. Don't buy the keyboard until Apple comes up with a fix, other than swapping at the store after waiting for an hour.

    Like the apple key board

    • Written by louise P from las vegas

I have used the keyboard for about 2 months now. I originally thought i would by the Logitech keyboard which Apple Store also stocked. They were out of stock the day i purchased my iPad Pro, so i went with the apple key board. I was especially glad of that decision when i started reading Logitech reviews from multiple users that stated the key board was scratching their iPad screens. Here are the pros and cons of the apple keyboard from my perspective:
    1. Light weight
    2. Always on, no need to charge
    3. Connects well. No lag period of time
    4. Good feel for the keys. Easy to type on

    1. No back light. This is the one i miss the most
    2. No funciton keys
    3. No back cover for the iPad-i purchased a sleeve that fit my iPad Pro and the keyboard
    4. No pen holder

All in all, it is the best keyboard for the pro at this time

Beware, this is a great keyboard...at first. Then it dies

    • Written by Matthew W from Birmingham

When I first got this keyboard, I was in impressed. It worked well and just automatically magnetically attached great but, as is becoming troublingly more often the occurrence with Apple products, glitches started after about 12 months of use. The first thing that happened is the iPad Pro displays the message "Accessory Not Supported" so, as many people do, I disconnect it and reconnect it, which fixes it temporarily. After that, every time you open the iPad that same message constantly pops up. Then, after a few weeks, the iPad stops seeing the keyboard altogether. Now, at 14 months it's absolutely useless and the iPad doesn't even recognize it is attached, so the keyboard is now dead. I use my keyboard regularly for my business, and I need it, I am constantly typing text messages and emails from an airplane seat to sitting in the bed. It's been adult used and protected the entire time I've had it. Never dropped or left near moisture, I take care of my stuff, especially my Apple stuff. Just average adult use. Don't get me wrong, if the keyboard was, say $20, sure, I get it, not that big of a deal, but as expensive as Apple products are, they should last well beyond 12 months.

I paid a hefty price for this because I thought it would last. $170 for a keyboard that lasts 12 months is a ripoff, sorry Apple, this one is a major fail on your part. #ipadkeyboardfail

I'm still not sure if it's a hardware issue or a software bug but, either way, it is dead.

If you want a keyboard that lasts and works for about 12 months, then buy this keyboard, it'll cost you about $15 per month because at 12 months, it's going to die and you're going to have to either buy a new one or go without.

I am really surprised that Apple has not done something to fix this problem. I really hate to have to type this review because I am an Apple person, not obsessive but everything I've got is Apple, iMac, iPad Pro, iPhone, Airport, etc. In fact I still have my original iPad 1...and the aftermarket keyboard STILL WORKS. My children now use it.

Sincelry disappointed at the failure of a $170 keyboard.

    Future buyers: Beware

Feels good, but never sat right from the start

    • Written by Jennifer F from Hilliard

The case itself is fine. The keyboard feels good. What is horrible is when put in keyboard mode, the horizontal part (the whole keyboard) never set flush against the surface it is sitting on, the front edge sits 1/4 above the surface. Which leads to not really being able to type efficiently or at all because it wiggles the whole time. It makes it nearly unusable for me. I didn't mention it or take it back because I thought it was just a normal thing. Until my mother in law got one and hers sits flush. Huge difference! I guess I just got a bad nut.

    So Far So Good

    • Written by Jessica C from New Haven

I love the keyboard so far. I read all of the reviews, and bought it. Granted, it's only been a month. I had the IPad Pro smaller version before I upgraded to the new Pro 12.9. Yes, it is missing a spot to secure the pencil, but I didn't let that sway me. I have a nice case to hold it or a strap to attach it if I want to. I do wish there was a back cover and a number pad. What I really miss, in case anyone at Apple reads these, is a backlight function. I do a lot of nighttime reading/typing and would love that. Unless it is here and I am missing it. But so far it connects immediately, I've not had any issues there, it's light, keys are easy to use. Maybe the next one will have a little scroll pad on it haha, then I would probably never use my laptop again.
