    Stupid keyboard

    • Written by Hsin-Yao C from Portland

It should be renamed as stupid keyboard. It only works when it wants to, and more than often it just doesn’t work when you type. For those who consider using iPad Pro/Smart Keyboard for productivity purposes, please think thoroughly because it’s never gonna be as reliable as your laptop. Apple should be sorry for releasing this product.

    Stops working

    • Written by Marvin S from Houston

This Smart Keyboard is guaranteed to become a Smart Cover. The keyboard stopped working with an error message that says device not support it. Don’t wast your money.

    Shockingly bad

    • Written by Jonathan C from Corning

    Two huge flaws:
    1) This keyboard doesn’t stay connected well at all. The soft keyboard constantly pops up requiring me to reseat it.
    2) As a cover, the magnet isn’t strong enough so you cannot wrap it around without it falling off.

Minor gripe. There isn’t backlighting. I cannnot type well in low light and with non standard keys touch typing isn’t straight forward.

I sent it in for repair. They sent it back and said this is normal.

$160 down the drain. They don’t deserve a star for this product.

    Second one and stopped working

    • Written by Melanie N from Greenacres

I bought this keyboard and within a week it stopped working. It made a sound like a key was being pressed in error. I took it back and they did not want to replace it telling me it might be my iPad. Eventually they replaced it and it worked for a couple of months and went bad again. I am afraid to buy another one of these keyboards so for my sons iPad we purchased a different type. It works but this Apple one when it works is much better. I hope Apple solves the problem.

    Unreliable and hard to exchange

    • Written by Ben F from DENVER

I’m on my second Smart Keyboard. Apple acknowledged a problem with the first version - the keys didn’t work. I got a free exchange. It’s the same problem with the second version. Done with Apple Smart Keyboards. Suggest looking for a well-rated, third party product. I brought in the second one and was told “No,” that there was not a problem with it. The problem only happens some of the time.

    Great design, poor quality

    • Written by Jeffrey H from Fort Worth

Love the slim profile of this keyboard and how it feels when typing. Unfortunately stopped working after less than 2 years of use. For $160 should last longer or come with a better warranty.

Fantastic keyboard . . . if you get the latest version ;-)

    • Written by Mark G from Dallas

I bought this keyboard along with my first generation iPad Pro 12.9 in late 2015. It worked . . . for a while. Then I began to experience periodic "disconnects" when the keyboard would disconnect from the smart connectors and the on-screen keyboard would appear. Because the problem was sporadic, I assumed that it was dust or dirt creating the problem. So I cleaned and cleaned the connectors. But the problem remained.

When I read that Apple was issuing a recall for this keyboard, I took it in to my local Apple store. After testing it (and verifying the random disconnect problem), they replaced the keyboard on the spot.

And the new one: MARVELOUS (as Billy Crystal would say). Better travel on the keys, more rigid construction, and no problem with disconnection. THIS is the keyboard I had expected and now, three years later, I have.

Good things come to those who wait . . . and when Apple chooses to fix the problem ;-)

If you have a 12.9 iPad Pro and need/want a keyboard, this new one won't disappoint. My iPad Pro is now almost a laptop replacement thanks to having a reliable keyboard.

    Lightweight and slim

    • Written by Kai K from Longview

Despite the shallow key press and strange key feel this keyboard is on of the best I have tried. In fact, I wrote this review on it. It doesn’t have music and backlight shortcuts.... that I have found but it does have a couple winners that have led me to keep it. After using the Logitech slim folio keyboard for iPad Pro and a zagg keyboard, I ended up returning both of them and buying this keyboard. Nothing quite makes the cut comparatively when it comes to slimness and comfort. The keyboard fold nicely and doesn’t add a ton of weight to the iPad. I find myself growing to enjoy the shallow key press as it speeds up typing and makes the keyboard thinner. Overall this keyboard proved a great user experience and is a great addition to iPad Pro!

Like everyone else, works for about a year then connectivity issues

    • Written by William K from San Jose

Works well for a year then connectivity issues crop up - "Accessory not supported". Over time its become increasingly difficult to get it reconnected...reboot, power on/off, attach/detach the keyboard multiple times and if lucky, it will reconnect.

    Bad quality

    Connection issues. Impossible to use.

    • Written by Vladislav V from Moscow

Used to work fine for a year. Then connectivity issues started, then worse and worse. Got it replaced at authorised service centre only to get another not working one. Now I use it as a stand. poor quality. Not everything Apple makes is good. Beware.

Worked for a while, now not so much

    • Written by Eric T from Seattle

I loved it for about a year. I'd use it as my normal cover, and any time I needed to type for real; I'd flip it out and it would work. Keypresses were pretty good and key spacing was good enough for me to type effectively.

These days though... I have to fiddle with the joint and reconnect it about a dozen times or more before it actually works. It takes more effort every time and I'm just about positive it will stop working altogether in the very very near future. I never had this problem with the bluetooth logitech keyboard I used on my old iPad. Super disappointing.

    Just don't bother.

Bought this and the pencil, now I need something else to carry both.

    • Written by Erich D from San Antonio

Let me be clear: I really do love the simplicity of the Smart Case .. the no fuss clip and use, the three phases of use. I don’t find the keyboard hard to use, but I agree that the keyboard is above average but not the best you could use. The thing is, I also bought an Apple Pencil.

I like using both, but after spending an additional $270, I find that I have to spend even more to solve the issue of using these as a portable device. I realize that this is the trademarked Apple style (the more you get, the more you need). I’d expect at least this much to work as one. I should count myself fortunate to even be able to use these marvels of the modern age.

I’m using the smart case to write this. As I am writing, I should have you know that the Apple Pencil is laying on that weird fold in my pants that happens when I site down on a couch. The Apple Pencil almost magnetized to the iPad. Almost. There is no space for it between the keyboard and the iPad, and it really seems like there should be. I have often inadvertently tapped the screen while typing, and it was only after I purchased this case that I discovered there are cases that allow more space between the keyboard and the iPad.

Don’t get me started on the separate additional case that Apple sells to keep the iPad and Apple Pencil together.

    Device not supported error

    • Written by Scott B from Pitkin

Be aware of the possibility that your iPad may someday refuse to recognize this device. I never left a bad review for an Apple product, but this REALLY irks me.

Great for a while. To be great again?

    • Written by Josh W from Kansas City

I bought this with the Apple pen and my iPad Pro for school about 13.5 months ago. Initially this was the greatest tech and note-taking combination I had ever had. Connection was flawless, response time seamless, and function was phenomenal.

6 months ago that started to change. Connection broke several times, keystroke recognition slowed, and I had to constantly adjust the positioning of my iPad to get the connection back.
4 months ago I began having to detach and reattach the keyboard to get it back - often multiple times for each instance.
2 months ago I began receiving spastic 'battery charging' readings (and sounds, the one that plays when you plug something into the lightning port) which lead to the screen not staying off and the battery draining when not in use. This issue persisted whether in cover-form or keyboard-form.
Throughout this evolution I was working with Apple-approved technicians to find fixes, hence some of the stuff I tried above.

Now I have a completely non-functional, $169.99 keyboard. I can still use it as a stand, I guess. 3 stars because product WAS great, but is now broken.

Called Apple support and luckily they (Becca) have been incredible for helping me with replacing the product. I got set up with express-replacement and should be expecting that any day now. This customer service is the reason why this product maintains a 5 star rating - one I believe that the product deserves besides the issues above.

Hopefully this one lasts longer, but for now I am pleased!

    The worst Apple product ever

    • Written by Yavor Y from sofia

It’s great when it works and I like the design too, but I can’t accept the annoying messages and the dings every 1-30 sec and the blinking charging sign. Also, it drains the battery when the iPad is in my backpack- I can hear the warning sound on every single step.
I love all my other apple products, but the “smart” keyboard is huge disappointment. My colleague is using a 49$ 3rd party keyboard without any issues for more than a year. It’s a shame

Negative ten stars: worst keyboard or product in the history of technology.

    • Written by JOHN D from Washington

I love this keyboard. When it works. Unfortunately, it doesn't work often. Just before I am ready to throw out my investment, it starts working. Then, when I get happy enough that it is working, it doesn't work any more. There is no pattern to this other than the precise targeting of my emotional state to utterly infuriate me. This is a kind of triumph for the creative team to have come up with something that so perfectly irritates me. Congratulations! Honor is yours.

This keyboard was nice when it worked. It started having issues when update 11 came out. Then it stopped working altogether. I took it to the apple store and confirmed it was bad. Then I was told that apple would not stand behind the product and replace it. If they won't stand behind the products they sell I will no longer be buying them.

    What a great failure.

    • Written by Alberto C from Philadelphia

I’ve had this keyboard since the day I bought my iPad Pro 12.9 a Little more than a year ago. Well before the warranty expired I started getting messages of “accessory not supported” was told to update and erase iPad. Didn’t help. Now the keyboard does it more than ever and most of the time doesn’t work and the warranty is over. The keyboard is great only when it works. It’s really disappointing Apple won’t replace these keyboards with so many people having the same problems its should be recalled. There is a defect. A keyboard that cost so much to should be warranted for 5 years.
