    Device Not supported error.

    I have a regular apple blue tooth Keyboard and decided to spring for the Smart Keyboard for my 12.9 inch iPad Pro. Nice compliment to the iPad. It reduced the need to carry both the iPad and a Keyboard. However less than a year and it is failing. "Device Not Supported". I am disappointed it didn't last longer.

    Apple you may be looking at a Smart Keyboard 2 in the future, that will have iOS smart keys etc, but please pay attention to the quality. I will purchase the 2nd Generation but for now i'm out the cost of a keyboard and will go back to carry my trusty blue tooth apple keyboard.

    A nice alternative to cheap feeling keyboard cases

    This keyboard might not have as much key travel as the others but is very quiet and is very nice to type on. It also feels like it is worth the amount that you are paying. The others are all plastic and just don’t feel like they are worth the amount that you are paying for them.

    Using it for two years now

    I bought this keyboard as soon as it became available for the initial iPad Pro. I have worn the key labels off many of the keys, I have some issues with the responsiveness at times, and periodically (in latest builds of iOS) it get's completely ignored, and I have to restart the iPad (detaching and reattaching the keyboard doesn't help).

    Positives: using the smart connector, no charging required, easy attach and detach, it can be used to clean your screen, and overtime more and more iPad apps are fully supporting keyboard short cuts.

    Negative: Keyboard label wear, the screen cleaning overtime gets worse, and inconsistent responsiveness in later builds of iOS (11.2.x and beyond).

    Such a nice iPad cover and keyboard... that DOESN'T WORK after some months of usage.... TWICE... not buying one more sorry... Logitech or any other brand now...

    Smart Keyboard not so smart

    Apple’s Smart Keyboard for 12.9 inch iPad Pro is enjoyable to type with when it works. Therein lies the rub. The company extracts a price that’s 15% of what the iPad Pro costs for this product and it is simply unreliable. Every time you open it up to use, there are the necessary gyrations to get it to sync - push, pull, detach, rub, and for all that it may or may not work. I have always paid the Apple premium because of the value I attach to performance. This product does not meet the performance standards I’ve come to expect from Apple.
    Additionally, you shouldn’t buy the keyboard with the idea that it provides protection for the iPad, because carrying the two together can be dangerous. The keyboard will slide off. There are many near misses of catching a falling iPad detached from the keyboard.
    This is my first negative review of an Apple product. Others may have different experiences. Wouldn’t recommend.

    Overpriced rubbish

    Purchased the keyboard to complement my 12.9" pad what a disappointment. Feeble magnet to attach the pad to the keyboard, pad fell out onto the floor when using it on my lap luckily didn't get damaged. No mouse pad on the keyboard so still get finger marks on the pad screen. The thing is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Can't wait to see the back of it on eBay.

    Stopped working, Apple can’t figure it out.

    The keyboard begins to fail at the “device not supported” prompt. No one knows why it continues to fail, not even Apple. The “hard reset” is a joke. Too expensive to totally fail the way it has. Do not buy this product.

    Excellent keyboard, just missing some keys for programming.

    I avoided getting a Smart Keyboard for a while and opted instead for an external bluetooth keyboard. Despite working very well, having to carry a separate item everywhere I took my iPad became annoying. So I finally too the risk and got myself the Smart Keyboard, and I could not be happier. I have not taken my iPad without it anywhere ever since. Typing obviously doesn't feel like a mechanical keyboard, however it is good enough for me, and certainly a lot better than typing on the screen.

    I use it for causal internet browsing but also for programming. Using a a set of Apps ("Working Copy", "Prompt", and a code editor App I am developing myself) I have been publishing to my blog and coding other tidbits very efficiently using the Smart Keyboard. There are only a few issues that prevent me from giving it a 5 start review:

    1. Missing forwards-delete and escape keys. These are extremely useful when using a terminal app or coding.
    2. Backlit keys would be very welcome, although difficult to implement with the currently used materials.

    I recommend the Smart Keyboard to everyone that asks me. It is a great product!

    Almost perfect keyboard for my use

    Keyboard very responsive, lightweight, quick connection, & I like it that it doesn’t have its own battery to keep charged.

    Like to keep my 12.9” iPad Pro minimal in bulk & weight so this works great, but need something to compliment it for better protection when on the go, have Targus case that works perfect transforming it into a laptop but with the bulk & weight. Might try one of those light back covers that works with the Smart Keyboard & something to carry the Apple Pen.

    I think some of the keyboard functional issues people complain about could be improved thru the iOS. I don’t handle my iPad like a laptop & I’m very careful moving around with the keyboard attached, I don’t expect the Smart Connect magnets to keep everything held together at any angle.

    A nice to have improvement if possible would also be for the keyboard to act as a solid cover when folded up so it doesn’t flop around when opening up from the iPad screen, plus a nice very lightweight back cover with a pen holder available that all work together as a very minimal lightweight but protective & secure cover when on the move.

    Hope one of these days Apple adds mouse function to iPad Pro iOS & integrates mouse controls with the keyboard, would like to stop grunging the screen with my fingers & only use the pen, keyboard, or hover, ink, or control with a mouse cursor.

    The only critical complaint I have is it needs backlit keys, that is a very important issue to me.

    This product is the worst apple product I've purchased.

    I bought this in July 2016, and have used it frequently for a year and a half. I'm sad to say that I deeply regret this purchase.

    First, I'll give props to where the keyboard does well. It feels fantastic to use and is very light and very portable. I love the way the key board feels and how useful the shortcuts are. It feels premium and very apple-like.

    Where this product fails and actually the hardware itself. The magnets just aren't strong enough and it doesn't always react to realize your typing. The smart-connector, while very useful, seems to fail far too frequently on this keyboard. It's an absurd amount. The device often appear "this device is not supported," and fails. It's just plainly a disappointing experience.

    I can't recommend this product to anyone and would highly recommend looking elsewhere if you're trying to purchase a keyboard for an iPad. Save your money and do not buy this product!

    Nice to Use, but Significant Problems

    First, I will say that the keyboard is light weight, convenient as a screen cover, and overall nice to type on. That being said, there are some features, as others have mentioned, that are seariously lacking. I can understand why the caps lock button does not have an indicator light— it likely would have added bulk to a keyboard thats greatest strength is its featherweight nature. That being said, I wish there was a setting that would put an icon at the top left of the screen when the caps lock is on. Because many things automatically capitalize, I waste more time than I care to admit trying to figure out if the caps lock is on or off.

    Second, the letters on the keyboard fade extremely quickly. To be fair, I use my iPad Pro as a laptop for law school, so I type on it A LOT— in class, when I outline, etc. That being said, I have had it just over 6 months, and I can no longer see the “S” or the “D,” and the “C” and “A” are close behind. This has been very disappointing and probably easily avoidable on Apple’s end.

    Finally, while I have not had as big of a problem as others on this end, it does seem like I am disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard more than should be necesssary. I am not sure if this is a problem with the apps I use (mostly Word and Chrome), or a problem with the keyboard. Either way, it is inconvenient that I have to disconnect and reconnect the keyboard anytime I have not used it for more than a few hours.

    When it Breaks good luck getting help

    First off, I can not read the serial number on the felt to save my life. I gave the apple rep 5 different scenarios from what I could read on the keyboard. There is no way to get the Serial Number off of your actual IPad when it is connected. My keyboard is currently not connecting and drops connect, a well known issue from what I am reading. Beyond the connectivity issues, the keyboard itself shows major wear very quickly. This is not what you would expect for a $169 accessory. Apple support via-chat is worthless, they wouldn’t even setup an appointment. Apple really has lost its hardware quality and service it once had... #misssteve

    Used to work

    This used to work before the iOS 10 update. Now it works 1/10 times I try it. It can take over 20 minutes to get the iPad to recognize it, and the. I have to go through it all again next time. Huge pain.

    Doesn’t Work Consistently

    Firstly, let me say that the keyboard is lightweight and creatively constructed. However, it does not have backlighting, has very limited angles and what is most fustrating is that it does not work consistently. I have tried two of these keyboards on more than one iPad Pro. The results were consistent. I had to adjust the keyboard often just to get a connection. Each time I took the tablet/keyboard out of “Type Mode" and put it back into “Type Mode”, I would have go through this routine of trying to adjust the tablet to get it to connect. Needless to say this is not very fun...nor very productive. Not sure what the issue is but it would be great if Apple looked into it and fixed the problem.

    It's a keyboard people, and smart cover.

    Don't overthink it. No, it doesn't have a holder for the pencil, or a back cover. GOOD. I don't want bulk and unnecessary bits in my way. It works as a smart cover, the keyboard is easy and precise to use AND it fits inside my leather sleeve which has a pencil holder. All the protection I need plus it's not too bulky so if I travel, I can easily slide it inside my carryon.

    No charging the keyboard, no needing an extra cable, no extra bulk. Does what I need it to do. Functional and simple.

    I'm satisfied.

    I would have given this keyboard a zero rating if possible. It is hopelessly useless. The message “device not supported” is the only thing I get when I try to use this keyboard. Apple should be ashamed that they would vend such a flimsy product. I have tried cleaning the contacts dozens of times. I have followed other on-line instructions to correct the problem, including using a magnet to activate the so-called “Reed switch’ in the guttering above the keyboard. Useless like the keyboard. Apple should be ashamed.

    Unreliable at best

    I am writing this review from my Smart Keyboard. The typing experience is amazing, and the idea of a Smart Cover woven with a convenient keyboard is great. It would be an even better idea if the keyboard actually worked. To be exact, in order to write this review from my keyboard, I had to attach/detach my keyboard 8 times and restart my iPad twice. The three prong connector is convenient but it DOES NOT WORK. I’d rather be able to rely on my keyboard. Save yourself the money and buy a more reliable brand.

    Stops working after a few months

    Great design and functionality when it works. Expect it to stop working after about 6-7 months and to get a message stating “this device is not supported “. They replaced my first one and now i need to replace it again. I guess the high price covers all the times you will need to replace it. Apple is slowly becoming unreliable with lack of innovation. I hope they can get it together.
