    Unhappy Teacher

I purchased the Apple Pencil to provide real time notes as I teach math to middle school and find this tool with the Apple TV very helpful. It worked fine in June when school closed. Now this week school opened and it does not work. It pairs, but won’t write. Warranty ended in July. I am so unhappy. Barely had it a year! Now it must be replaced. It was never dropped, and was kept in a protective case. I need it for teaching, but don’t have an extra $100 to spend. I much rather use it on my students than paying Apple for a defective product. Come on Apple— please start making quality products. You used to! I own your computers, iPads, Watch, phone and TV. I’ve had to use my money to replace the TV and now the pencil. Give teachers better discounts. We help parents purchase your products and encourage students to use them.

    Pretty good

    • Written by Lestae N from Woonona

My Apple Pencil that have bought is very good, except that for $145 it is very weak as I have nearly broken it a couple times. If you made it out of a stronger material I would have given this a five stars. Other than that it is pretty good

I wasted almost $100. Don’t get it! The pencil works fine at first, then it just drops completely dead and the only way to use it is by putting it on the charger. I eventually found out no way to get a replacement, and just threw it in the trash, horrible. I will get the Logitech crayon for iPad instead.

Forget to charge it and it dies

    • Written by Yu-Hsuan C from Brooklyn

I love it when it works. It's the best tablet and stylus combo I experience. However, when I left my apple pencil unused for days and its battery drains, I can't make it alive again. It just doesn't get charged and doesn't respond at all. I know there is something to do with how lithium battery works but is Apple leaving the problem to the users? Should I pay so much attention to the battery of this pen to prevent it from killing itself?

    A Waste

    • Written by Chris W from Millville

Bought this as a gift for my father. He has a master's in fine art, and he's retiring soon so I thought he might enjoy taking a stab at digital art since he already had an iPad Pro. He used it several times last year after he got it, but shortly after that his work got very busy and we had some family matters that took a lot of his time. Long story short, when he went to start using it again this summer (just over a year after purchasing it for him) he found that it wouldn't pair for more than a split second. On.. off.. on.. off. So we took it in to the local apple store, and they said they could replace it for 80 dollars, or else he could buy a new one. No. Other. Choice.

    That's deplorable. Three reasons:

Number 1: Who makes a product with a one year lifespan? Maybe Belkin. Not Apple... I thought.
Number 2: I thought Apple was supposed to be on the cutting edge of technology? Is this really the cutting edge? The device is great, but tell me you knew this would only last about a year... If not, what happened? If so, you really need to say so up front.
Number 3: Customer service used to be impeccable with Apple. Now you're saying even though it lasted a year you're only willing to discount a replacement by 20% for a battery replacement? Again, you should make this known before you sell this thing.

Everyone interested in this product needs to know this has roughly a year lifespan before they purchase... Sorry. I'm frustrated. But I really never expected this kind of disappointing product to come from a company I've respected for so long.

    Sad, Apple. Sad.

    Stopped working!

    • Written by Rebekah S from Belleville

I bought the pencil May of last year and it worked perfectly fine until now. I have tried everything to get it to work again and that did nothing. Of course....it's barely past the 1 year warranty mark so it can't be replaced now which is frustrating. I was told that it would be the same cost to fix it as it did when I bought it! Ridiculous!

Accurate for drawing and writing but too heavy

    • Written by Steven G from Sydney

Have been using the apple pencil gen 1 for a couple of years. Really happy with the accuracy for drawing and note-taking but this is way too heavy for prolonged use. I regularly need to mark up very long documents with hand written annotations using my ipad. I'm unable to do this with the apple pencil as it triggers horrible RSI pain if I use it for this purpose. I have no problems doing similar work in hardcopy with a normal pen (the apple pencil is about 3x heavier than a ball point pen). I'm also able to do digital markup with a non-bluetooth stylus, which is much lighter -- but then I sacrifice accuracy and palm rejection.

I understand that this is a specific use case, but I don't think that it would be an uncommon one for the apple pencil. I remember years ago I had a cheap android tablet with an incredibly light and accurate bluetooth stylus built in - so I don't think this is a technological limitation. All my preferred note taking apps are iOS only. I just wish there were a stylus for iOS with the fidelity of the apple pencil but the weight of an S-pen. (And a rubberised tip would be great for better traction and control on the page)

    Serious battery problem

    • Written by Andrea P from Basiliano

The lifespan of the battery is very bad. I've 2 pencils 1st gen and both of them are defunct because battery won't charge anymore.

    Stopped pairing

    • Written by William O from Palm Harbor

What Apple fails to tell everyone is that the automatic upgrades to the iPad Pro may kill the pairing with the pencil. Apples solution is just buy the newer version of the Pencil which they made 30% higher in price. My new policy is if your product stops working due to your software upgrades I never buy any version again.

    Amazing Waste

    • Written by Scott R from Big Bear Lake

    When it works, it's great..
BUT, the design and battery are really bad. I don't use the pencil that much, but have already had to get a replacement while under the original support. The new one literally lasted only a month or so, and now the pencil will not charge or be recognized by my ipad pro.
Re: design, the cap and charge adapter are both easily lost. The round design creates a problem when you set it down, it rolls right off the desk...
Take my advice and don't bother with it...

    It's not worth it

    • Written by Charlotte B from Lake Charles

I really wanted the pencil becauseI I was an Android person and I switched over to Apple iPhone when the airlines band the Galaxy phone from flying and I had a flight from New Jersey back home and could not take my phone. So that was my decision to switch to iPhone, so since I have everything apple. I have the iPhone, MacBook pro and a iPad pro 11. I have the Apple pencil with my tablet, but it is so bad I want to throw it sometimes not worth the money. My finger works better then this pencil, I was going to write a review before but I waited to see if it would get better and it hasn't after months of being patience. I would never suggest to getting this Apple pencil. NOT A GOOD BUY
Some of my choice words could not be use in this review. It would not post.

    A good product but.....

    • Written by Cheron B from Fort Pierce

there are so many things that would make this better. It doesn't have an indicator light to let you know when its charging. Which wouldn't be a big deal if using your iPad to charge wasn't so bad. The connection is loose and the pencil often falls out. Secondly, the adapters and add ons are small and poorly thought. Too many adapters and little small pieces that can easily be lost. When did I have an app for that change to 'we have an adapter for that', or we have a cord for that. Thirdly and most importantly, this pencil needs some type of locator device on it. It is super easy to loose and once its lost you have no way of locating it. And, considering its small size, it will get lost! Last, when you charge it from your iPad, it kills the battery. Its like the battery from your iPad transfers to the pencil.

Pros: its a good tool with the right application. I love it. I have purchased 2, lost 2, and contemplating a 3rd. If you love to sketch, doodle or draw its a must have,.

    Poor design

    • Written by Bob old M

a $100 for a pencil - I don't mind the weight or how quickly it loses a charge but really for $99.00 you couldn't spend another ten cents to figure out a way to keep the top and charging connector located securely with the pen

    Bad buy

    • Written by Eleanor G from Hooper

Very disappointed for the money. It will not hold a charge, I did like the way it worked when I first bought it. I think Apple needs to replace faulty pencils. I only have had it for approximately one month. I certainly don’t recommend anyone buying this item.

It's.... Really Bad. Don't buy it.

    • Written by Madi D from Rapid City

I got mine with a gift card less than a month ago, used it a few times and noticed that my hand would cramp very badly after only an hr or so of use. Went to pick up the stylus for my Wacom tablet and was shocked by how light it was.. turns out the apple pencil weighs a TON for something so small and its "sleek" design means its hard to hold on to. Thus, hand cramps. I was gonna buy a pencil grip from Walmart to see if that would help, but it doesnt matter because it died on me. Didn't charge it for a couple days, now it wont hold a charge at all. I'm glad I got it using a gift card, because its an absolute waste of $100. I'm honestly mad I had to spend $6 of tax on it.

    Broken tip...good luck

    • Written by S Franklin W from Johnson City

Worked fine until the tip broke leaving 1/3 of the tip inside the pencil. Good luck getting it out without damaging the pencil. This is a serious design flaw from a company priding itself on design. I would not recommend any "pencil" that leaves a portion of the breakable tip internal to the device and inaccessible for removal and replacement. $100 rendered obsolete by a $5 piece of plastic. Unacceptable Apple.

Apple Pencil as waste of my time.

    • Written by Trevor C from Orange

I have been a great supporter of Apple products for many, many years. My last iPad Pro plus Apple Pencil were a great team. Unfortunately, I was convinced to upgrade to the latest due. The iPad Pro is definitely better, though I'm not sure enough to warrant the cost. The new Apple Pencil is nothing more than a waste of both time and money. My major use is research, so with software such as PDF Expert, the use of both is essential. If I leave my Apple Pencil for more than a few minutes it disconnects. The real problem is obtaining a reconnection. Sometimes it takes in excess of 15 minutes for successful connection. The response is "connected", but that's not to say that it actually works. Totally a NEGATIVE from me!
