don't make my mistake. don't buy it.

    • Written by Barbara B from Brooklyn

After buying my iPad Mini 4 online, I went to my local Apple store to trade in my Mini 2 and with the trade-in gift card buy for my new device a new smart cover. "This is great!" I thought. "The smart cover price is the same as when I bought the Mini 2 a few years ago!"

The surprise: I got home, extracted the cover from its box, and discovered the cover really was just a cover. The back and sides were left bare. It's like buying a car and discovering the price didn't include the engine.

Made stranger: Apple doesn't directly sell the back anymore - they call the back the case -- for the iPad Mini 4. "You can get it from a reseller," the support rep told me. The reason? Both the online rep and the sales clerk when I went back to the Apple store to return this rectangle of magnetized polycarbonate, gave me the same reason. The Mini 4 is considered an old device.

It's not that old, folks. Apple sold it to me a week ago. Apple is selling it as I write this review. It's not so much old as disdained.

Now it's true I could have turned over the store display of the cover and discovered It really only protected the screen. But you know, from the front it looks just like the fully functional one I had bought for the Mini 2. I was happy to spend my trade-in money. It didn't occur to me Apple was running a shell game.

Now, if you're still dying to buy this smart cover, there is a reseller on eBay who will sell you its corresponding silicone back, at least while the back is still in stock. You'll have spent almost a hundred dollars to clothe your machine.

Or, if you've just discovered your mistake, as I did, you could do what I did. Return the Apple cover (you have 14 days after original purchase, and they don't care that you've mutilated the original packaging), and with your refund money buy a nice functional front-and-back smart cover from any number of third-party merchants for a fraction of the price. With the money left over you can also buy a good screen protector.

Don't get me wrong. I love my iPad Mini. It's perfect to carry around, and the 4 is measurably faster than the 2. I don't disdain it. I use it a lot. I chose it over bigger tablets because it suits my needs. But I don't like -- in fact, I disdain -- Apple's silly design decision.

    Ready to return

    • Written by Annmarie W from Washington

I didn’t read carefully enough and now that it arrived, I see it doesn’t have a back like my previous case for an iPad mini. I was already annoyed that the mini case doesn’t fit the mini 4. Ok, I figured I’d just return it and buy what I wanted. I want a leather case that has the trifold design. Sadly, it doesn’t exist. Really unhappy. Might return the mini 4, too. Yes, it matters a lot. Too expensive for a front only that doesn’t even seem to fit right. So disappointed.

    I love it

    • Written by Una H from Lone Tree

I had difficulty getting the Smart Cover to work and searched the net for a solution to no avail. Previous iPads worked by going to general, lock/unlock. I decided to work through everything and found the solution under Brightness. Success.

Fits good with the silicone case

    • Written by Randy R from Portland

This cover, along with the silicone case is really nice, and fits my iPad Mini 4 good. And it feels good in my hands. It's a "smart" cover, so it turns on the screen when you open it, and turns the screen off when you close it. It magnetically grips the left edge of the iPad really well. I miss the one-piece silicone case and cover that my old iPad had, which worked better, in my opinion, or else I would have given this 5 stars.

Not built for long term use

    • Written by Brian S from Nesconset

The case is nice and was great when I first got it, but after only one year of use, it's hanging by a thread. You would honestly expect the case to be build to withstand everyday, but it's completely flawed and it's unfortunate. It rips easy, the glue on the gphinge has come off thus exposing the magnets onto the bear metal of my iPad. It's a major disappointment

The Ipad Mini 4 Smart Cover is not Smart!

    • Written by Trudy K from Winnipeg

This is the 3rd Smart Cover we have bought and the first 2 worked great on the original Ipad Mini. The Ipad Mini 4 is different for some reason (thinner case) and the Smart Cover does not adhere to the case well enough (it seems the magnets are too weak) and it becomes completely useless as you spend all your time re-fastening the cover. It even falls off from it's own weight if it's flipped open and if you don't hang onto the cover as it flips over. We have not even tried to address the issue that the Smart Cover did not turn the Ipad on/off when opening/closing the cover. There may be a solution for that problem but it matters not if the cover won't adhere to the case properly.
We returned it immediately and are working on finding a solution.

    Not fit for purpose

    • Written by Duncan C from Blairgowrie

This product does not work. The magnets do not grip the case and for £29 is a complete waste of money. Retuned with one hour for a refund.

    Works, but overpriced...

    • Written by Elton B from Valley Falls

I purchased this with the also overpriced silicone case and it is a nice (but pricy) two piece case. Seriously, Apple, $39 for a tiny Smart Cover and $59 for a silicone back is over the top, but I did end up buying both because it is a nice combination. Be aware that older mini covers DO NOT fit the mini 4 and the magnets don't work with older covers. Apple is forcing you to buy the newest version; kind of bites but there you have it. If the package does not say mini 4 don't buy it.

Absence of Leather Case was a Huge Mistake

    • Written by John P from Los Angeles

I don't quite understand why Apple has decided to not make a leather version of the cases this time around, but it definitely was a huge mistake on their part. The tactile feel of the polyurethane is so awful that it has really deterred me from using my iPad mini 4 for a long duration compared to previous versions.

    I Like It!

    • Written by Willard B from Killeen

If this is the first or only review you've read, I have to say that the product name is misleading: this is not a case. It is a back cover. Having said that, on with the review. People are complaining a lot about this case. It's too expensive, but that's Apple: high quality, high price. It fits like a glove, looks and feels great, and the bulk it adds to the iPad is offset by its positives. It also integrates perfectly with its counterpart cover, exactly as I had hoped. Time will tell how well it wears; I've never owned a silicone case before. I remember trying and rejecting Apple-branded leather iPad cases in the past, because they added too much bulk. Not so this combination. I like it! That's saying a lot, since I'm a big fan of leather cases.

Great cover, great fit, wakes up iPad

    • Written by William F from Seattle

Very well designed, I just wished they had better color selections. I don't know what people are complaining about. Mine fits perfectly (has enough lip to make it easy to open) and has no problems holding on as a stand. Perhaps others bought the wrong one? I love how it's just a cover and not a bulky protective case. This allows the iPad to fit in my external keyboard stand. As far as not waking up the iPad, maybe try Settings->General->Lock/Unlock ?

This is the worst cover I've ever had for any of my iPads I've ever owned!

    • Written by Carl E from Lanai City

Ok first off if it were possible I would give this negative stars! And come on Apple am I buying a bikini where top and bottom are separate? This cover will not stay on by itself and it doesn't wake or put the iPad to sleep. I figured that if I buy the matching back cover it would work better, it does help it stay on the iPad, but the "Smart Cover" still does not wake or sleep the iPad. Save your money and buy a cover for a 1/3 of the price on Amazon. Shame on you apple you should give automatic refunds to anyone who bought this rubbish!

The iPad Mini Smart Cover works great. Glad I got it. The magnets attach the cover firmly to the device and are covered, so no scratches on the side of the case. An elegant and simple way to turn on and off your iPad and protect your screen. Very slim, light weight and unobtrusive.
This isn't a case, so can't be faulted for not providing overall protection. If you want a full case, you would need to combine this with the silicone case that covers the sides and back of the device. That is an expensive full-case option, but is the ultimate for those willing to drop the cash.

The word "Smart" should NOT accompany the name of this cover! DO NOT BUY

    • Written by Albo F from Santa Fe

There are very few cases in which this cover remains firmly attached. One of the main ones is, iPad lying flat on the table, hands nowhere near. As for carrying, the cover easily slides off. Same when placed in a purse, briefcase, carryon, or other bag. The cover is merely a symbol. Get a case. (After a two-hour trial, we'll be returning ours to trade up for a case.) Smart? No. Cover? Sometimes.

    Highly recommend

    • Written by Matthew G from Rehoboth Beach

I just purchased this product for my iPad Air 2, after having the older leather model on my old iPad2.

I really like it! I ordered Black, but the color is actually a dark dusty grey, which I prefer to solid black. It's lightweight (lighter than the old leather version) and doesn't detract from the feather weight quality of the iPad itself. Quality seems to be excellent so far. I would recommend this product to anyone seeking a slim cover without a lot of bulk at a good price.

    Stupid step back

    • Written by Luis M from Maple Grove

Who was the brainiac in Cupertino who thought it would be smart idea to not offer the full one-piece Smart Case for the iPad 4, and why do they still have a job?

So now we're stuck with the POS removable cover that does nothing to protect the back of the unit, and which falls off at the worst time. We are also stuck with having to buy a close solution to what was a perfect idea.

Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave. RELEASE A SMART CASE FOR THE IPAD MINI 4 YOU IDIOTS!

This case is not even close to being worth 40 dollars. Not only that, but it makes a horrible flimsy "stand". Very cheap design. Not recommended.

It covers my "pride & joy" really well.

    • Written by Darryn W from San Francisco

I find that it does a good job. Much better just to buy it from Apple and know the product works than to shop around. If I was to say one bad thing, I wish the cover was already attached to the back case, but I am sure there is a reason it is not.
