    Fed up

    • Written by Aliyah A from San Antonio

I am so tired of buying products from apple and not having them last. My cable end frayed without any mishandling (I leave my cable in my room untouched until I have to charge my laptop, which is usually right before I go to bed). Too bad I desperately need a charged laptop for school and will have to unfortunately buy another one of these...curious to see how long this one will last.

    Stopped working

    • Written by Britta F from Satsuma

Only had it for about 3 months and stopped working already. Used for my iPad Pro. Only had this ipad for about 4 months so I know the iPad isn’t the problem. Especially after reading all the other reviews. Waist of money, should not cost 20 dollars for it to only work a short time. Very disappointed in Apple.

    Bends Easily

    • Written by Julie M from Madison

This cord does not hold up to normal use. If the computer falls over onto it or is dropped it bends and becomes useless. Worst cord ever! Hate having to replace it every couple of months of normal use.

    Horrible charger cable

    • Written by Jessie M from Tempe

Here I go again! This is my third Apple charger cable for this MacBook. From the beginning it wouldn't stay hooked up if moved ever so slightly. Within a few months it bends and is basically useless. This is not the quality I expect from Apple.

Doesn't fit snugly into power brick, so loses connection to brick

    • Written by Thomas M from Los Angeles

This was a replacement for the cable that connects power brick to laptop. When plugging it into the power brick, it has to be aligned perfectly or the computer will not charge. Placing the brick on the floor after plugging it in runs the risk of dislodging the cable. It's that sensitive, though the original cable that came with the laptop was not.

Should not be marketed for data transfer

    • Written by Steven H from Berkeley

The item name is "charge cable" but the description says its good for data transfer. While it technically does transfer data, it does so at a top speed of only about 30 MB/sec. It actually makes my external SSD slower than a spinning disk. The external SSD should be about 500 MB/sec (and is that speed with a different cable)!

    Cable Has BAD ODOR

    • Written by Donna A from Alexandria

I recently purchased MacBook Pro. Upon opening the box I smelled a foul odor. Isolated this to the USB-C cable. I thought maybe after using for a week or two, cleaning it and airing it out, the smell would go away. After researching this on the internet, I was surprised to find many have had this issue. I could not find anything from Apple as to what they are doing about it. I did call Apple support and they are sending me a replacement. The two support reps I spoke to were completely unaware of this problem.

Pervasive Mold Smell - Disgusting on-going Problem

    • Written by Corinne B from Minneapolis

I'm a consultant, and every new MacBook that comes with this cable, as well as the separately purchased boxed version has the disgusting unhealthy & pernicious smell that gets on everything around it & doesn't dissipate.

I've checked at Apple Retail Stores & Best Buy. Sometimes it's so bad you can smell it right through the box.

Apple needs to solve this problem that is originating most likely right in the factory, as computers that come direct from the factory in China have the problem.

This has been an on-going problem that I first encountered in January 2018, and repeatedly since then on every new MacBook I work with. I've been working with computers (mostly Apple) since 1985, and this has never been a problem until 2018.

Apple, PLEASE take this seriously & get it fixed. Customers are becoming disgusted with Apple, and it is affecting the bottom line, as well as the health of those with mold allergies & the sensibilities of those who practice & enjoy good hygiene.

    cable odor overpowering

    • Written by Eric S from Holt

So Very disappointed with this cable. Tried to buy a new MacBook Pro, but the cable smell was so bad, we eventually had to return the computer. Tried airing it out in the basement, then the garage with no success. Causes headaches and nausea, and the odor seems to spread to everything the cable comes in contact with. We returned the cable to Apple store for a new one, but sadly had the same result. The staff in the store, including the manager, reportedly had never heard of the issue, but did admit the cable smells of mold when they opened a third one. Apparently all the cables are made of the same materials. This causes me to question why I would ever buy another product from Apple. We are long term users. I hope this issue will be corrected soon.

everyone is right this cable and standard is actually a disappointment

    • Written by TJ H from Santa Monica

You can basically only use this cable to charge, and you HAVE to use the apple cable to charge at full speed. aftermarket cables in my experience take twice as long to charge. So the "wireless future" that apple has described is actually double the cables you carry around with you all th time. Apple is expecting the aftermarket to plug all the gaps between accessories and macbooks, but its not graceful and its not carefully enough thought through. If I pull this cable our of my macbook 1st gen touchbar laptop even 1mm, I loos connection. it looks like its connected but its not. Also, my drives eject constantly. Thats a macbook problem more than a cable problem, but the two sides were ill conceived together. Lot of potential for USB-c, but its not helping me in my day to day life as a person who makes a lot of video and photo. Its just a lot of dongles and adapters and a heaping bag of cables. I now carry at least double the cables I used to.

Cracked and kinked after only 5 months

    • Written by Elizabeth K from Downingtown

Very disappointed with the power cable for my new MacBook. After just 5 months it has kinks and one part is actually cracked with the wires exposed. My MacBook spends most of it's time plugged in at a desk or my bedside table - not traveling a lot. The cable for my previous MacBook Pro was great for over 4 years and is still going strong. The quality of this cable is poor (read the other reviews!) and unacceptable considering the cost of a MacBook.

I have used about 3 of these charges since I got my MacBook...with all three charges, charging is a hassle, I have to unplug and replug the charger several times, in several ports before it works. Sometimes I give up and just leave my laptop dead for the whole day. It is really really stressful and inconvenient.

no magsafe, no charge indicator light, doesn't transfer data at high speed

    • Written by philip S from Houston

It's like the charge cable apple used to supply with laptops but this one doesn't include magsafe and doesn't include a charge status light. Also, don't confuse this with a thunderbolt 3 cable or even a useful data cable, it's just a dumb charge cable.

    Doesn't work

    • Written by Heidi B from Erwin

I have had my 12" MacBook for less than two months and my computer is completely dead and will not charge. After reading the other reviews, I am more hopeful that it is the charger that is bad. When you pay 2100 dollars for a computer, you don't expect that you will only use it for two month before it is completely useless. I am praying it is just the charging cable and will be happy if it is, but still, that is unacceptable.

    Another Shameful Apple Product

    • Written by Melissa F from McLean

I've been a dedicated Apple user ever since their 1st generation iPods. But I've decided my next computer will have to be a PC. This cable is a simple example of the company going downhill. I have gone through THREE charging cables since I've had my laptop (less than 5 months). I don't put undue stress on the cable either. I simply travel a lot, and need to wrap it and put it in a backpack. Repeatedly, these cables stop charging my computer. First they alternate between charging and not charging for a while and I'll fiddle with the cable to make it work, then eventually it stops working altogether. And if you lost the charger entirely you need to buy three different parts! This is ridiculous! And brand new MacBooks don't even come with the extension. This is such a shame.

As another reviewer mentioned, this is also a sub-par cable in terms of USB-C. It's JUST a charging cable - it won't transfer video, and it transfers data very slowly (even slower than the old USB 2.0 speeds). I'm now looking for other brands of cables. Don't bother with Apple's USB-C cable.
