    Ware and Tear

    • Written by Andrew R from Marblehead

The battery is great but the case falls apart like a piece of coffee cake. Also, the ease of plugging it into an iPhone charger is extremely convenient though overall still not impressed for what its worth.

    Bad design

    • Written by laurie P from moore

The case doesn’t come with a power button so the entire time your phone is in the case the case will never let your phone get below 100%. So even if you’re not using the phone the normal drain of the battery will drain the life of the case and will need to be charged long before the other charging cases would. Miss my lifeproof charging case which they discontinued

    The silicone peeled

    • Written by Hans J from Gig Harbor

The silicone wore through, peeled, and fell off. The extra battery life is great, but the actual case is garbage.

Not a bad case, but it’s not built to last

    • Written by Sten O from Frederick

The silicone outer cover cracks and eventually comes off. The battery itself failed on the first case, but it was replaced. Now the covering failed again after about 3-4 months

    So bummed.

    • Written by Melanie K from Boulder

The charging is great, no complaints there. But as everyone else said, the case literally falls apart. I use my phone for work, virtually NEVER put it in my pockets, and it was worn completely through. I don't even understand how. So I took it back to the Apple Store while still under warranty and they said because the case had lost a piece by the buttons it wasn't replaceable under warranty. Like a fool I bought another one, despite the truly awful case and the horrible design (ugliest phone case I've ever owned). Why you ask? Because the ease of charging with my apple charging cords. But after spending another $100 the second case is wearing out after a few months. Honestly, this makes me so bad I'm thinking about switching to Samsung for the Galaxy. My husband loves his and I'm not willing to spring for the iPhone X anyway. Apple is right on the edge of losing my support. If you pay a premium you better get premium quality.

    Silicon peeling off

    • Written by Stephen M from Albuquerque

I take great care of my phone and case and the silicon is already peeling off. I can only attribute this to putting it in and taking it out of my pocket which is a guys only option. The extra battery life is awesome but the case already looks horrible and is cheap. Very disappointed. I really like the case--just wish it lasted longer. Not sure I want to buy another and have the same thing happen.

    Better than Mophie?

    • Written by Christopher C from Hendersonville

I have used both the Apple Smart Battery case and the Mophie Battery case. If wireless charging is most important for you, go with the Mophie case. If being able to plug-in Apple accessories is more important, go with they Apple’s Smart Battery case.

The Mophie case is available with wireless charging. It is equipped with a Micro USB port on the base that will pass through data. The draw backs are that the battery charge status is displayed with just 4 LED lights on the back. The power to the iPhone has to be manually turned on and off with a button on the back. They have a hard plastic shell that can be just as slippery as the iPhone’s shell, and is easy to fumble and drop.

The Apple Smart Battery case will automatically turn on and off as need. There is a Lightning Port on the base that is compatible with other Apple accessories. The other shell is silicone with a good, sure grip. When charging without a phone attached, an LED will display an orange color while charging, and switches to green when the battery is 100%. But, you will have to connect an iPhone to see the remaining battery charge. The MAJOR drawback is the lack of built in wireless charging. The apple cases will block the iPhone’s own wireless charger when a case is attached.

    Pockets Beware!

    • Written by Ryan D from Telford

After normal wear and tear the soft silicone has all come off on this case, leaving just the hard plastic. It's disappointing that a case that costs this much can barely last a year. If Apple is going to design a case it should easily last 2 years of normal wear.

    Good product, lousy quality

    • Written by Rob V from Phoenix

Couldn't make it through my day without this product but the quality is sub-par. I previously had a Mophie which fell apart with use. Thought this Apple product would be of higher quality, Not so much, The thing is falling apart after a little over a year.

    Great battery, terrible quality case.

    • Written by Edward A from Dallas

Had to return the first one after the case began to fall apart in less than a year. Now on my second one, has fallen apart entirely. All of the material on the outside has peeled off. Haven't dropped the phone and take great care of it. The friction of putting the phone in and out of my pocket wore the case down to the hard plastic. The battery is great however.

    Great for 6 months

    • Written by Michael A from Kaneohe

Love the case. The best possible case out there. Has a nice battery, good grip on the rubber, and was well thought out. But.........It only lasts about 6 months. My last one lasted 6 months, and the one before that lasted 6 months. It's fine, because Apple replaced the last one, and I expect them to replace this one. If Apple can sell a product (I'm sure made in China) and sell it for 100 bucks, they better replace it when it falls apart in 6 months.
The battery in this one just stopped working, and when connected to the phone causes the phone to heat up and the phone battery has a run-away. Goes from 100% to zero in 20 minutes. So if you have enough free time to visit the Apple Store every 6 months, it is an awesome case.

    Poor durability

The durability of the matte silicon coating has worn off after about a week of use.
I’m quite disappointed giving the price of the case.

Just like every other review on here, the case is great when you first get it but then within the first 6 months it starts to fall apart at the edges and peel. It also does not offer any protection, screen broke twice on my phone with this case. Also, right around the time the silicone starts falling off, the battery also stops charging sporadically.

I am disappointed apple cannot create a better charging case with higher quality. I love to be able to use the same iPhone charger for the case unlike all the other cases but I refuse to buy a third case when the others have fallen apart before 1 year of use. I would expect something of greater quality with an apple logo on it and for $100.

One more review of how this case falls apart

    • Written by Per F from portland

I love this case but I hate how it falls apart. I gave my old iPhone 6s battery case to my neighbor and it is still fine over two years later. My wife and I each bought new cases for our 7s and they started disintegrating on the top corners at the same time. I hope Apple is listening to these reviews and, perhaps is offering some sort of refund. $100 is a lot for a case that self destructs pithing a year or so. Battery saves my life but the case looks silly all covered in electrical tape.

    NOT worth it

    • Written by Raquel C from Naperville

I love the performance of this case in terms of battery life. The material itself feels soft to the touch and easily slides into pockets; HOWEVER, I am on my third smart battery case! The silicone is very thin and not durable at all with normal use. I take very good care of my phone and rarely remove the charging case, yet after about a year the edges start to tear and peel. This does not affect the cases’ functionally, but the ware is certainly an eye sore as well as something you constantly feel will using your phone. This is definitely not something I am willing to deal with for $100. The fact that I’ve spent over $300 on battery cases just because I use my phone like the average person is ridiculous!!

While it's a good idea in theory, this case deteriorated quickly. The battery on the case doesn't last long and started to go downhill about two months after I got it. An hour at the Apple store of them trying to explain to me how many minutes per day I'm on the phone and not wanting to do anything about it was annoying. I decided it was better than nothing so continued to use it. Now it's peeling and I can see the hard part of the case (under peeling silicone) is also cracked. Spent 30 minutes on the phone with support and they're sending me another but charging me until I send the old one back. Did not expect this with Apple who I'm so financially tied to in so many ways and have been for many years. I don't think you're hurting for money are you, Apple? To the point you can't offer the same customer service as other professional companies? On another note, don't buy white or a light color. It instantly turned pink from being in a red jacket. Then after it's been in jeans pockets imagine that pink mixing with blue....grey....UGLY! Don't do it!

Falls apart - not worth the purchase

    • Written by Frederick E from Lexington

On my second case. The first one lasted 8 months before it completely fell apart. It de-laminates. I took it back to an Apple Store and pleaded for them to replace which they did. I got the replacement in January of 2018 and it is falling apart in November of 2018.

Question for Apple - are you going to replace these? Or, is it "too bad consumer"?
