One step forward.... Two steps back.

Were it not for the inclusion of Siri on this remote, I would give it only 1 star. Otherwise, it is a complete departure from the concept that made Apple TV great.
Control interfaces should be simple, straightforward and reliable. This track pad and it's swiping/clicking combination is the biggest fail yet encountered on an Apple product. It requires extreme caution and practice to avoid unintentional commands. I am very careful and particular about these things and still find myself exclaiming "I hate this remote" every time a desired action is derailed into a menu that requires careful and complicated swiping to get out of.
Here is a prime example; one of the most common commands that I need is to toggle subtitles on and off. The old remote could do this with a single long press on an easy to find button. The new remote requires exact swiping and navigation on two planes, the sequence of which will differ depending on which of the 3 submenus was last used, followed by more swiping and a click, which creates many opportunities for error. Imagine which of these is easiest to explain to your 74 year old mother over the phone. "By the way mom, you have to make sure your hands are completely dry, so don't touch your water glass"

If the goal is a positive user experience, the design team for the next version should be given these instructions: Add Siri to the original remote, plus a locator chip/tone to make it easy to find it when misplaced.

    Worked until it didn't...

I have had my Apple TV for almost 2 years. Never had any problems, worked flawlessly as it should, until a few weeks ago. My Apple TV remote started acting up. It seemed like it would disconnect and then reconnect erratically. I tried every suggestion from the online forum, restarted, and even reset my Apple TV, but it didn't seem to fix the issue. After charging the remote overnight it seems now it only controls the volume of my TV and nothing else. Every once in awhile it tries to reconnect, but doesn't. In the end, after speaking to Apple over the phone, the only option it seems I have left is to purchase a new remote for $60. I am now weighing the option between purchasing a new remote or just continuing to use my iPhone remote app. I could understand if the remote started to act up 5+ years after purchase, but two years seems like a short shelf life. When you buy an actual TV, the remote is the last thing one has to worry about and they usually outlast the TV itself. Disappointed in the product and the limited options I am left with. Would have rated this product 1 star, however I took into account that the remote did work until it didn't...

    complete garbage

thank god i still have the old silver remote from my previous apple tv. track pad is terrible, difficult to fast forward or rewind. having to swipe is much slower than simply hitting forward when sorting through shows

    Very glitchy

Awful!!! I use my old Apple TV remote that has the up,down, left, right buttons on it. The scroll pad is glitchy at both the top and bottom of remote look the same in the dark. Sometimes just picking the remote up will skip the movie forwards or backwards or pause it. It is nice that it has the volume controls and the Siri feature though.

    Poor user interface

While the remote is minimal in appearance, the functionality suffers greatly. Fast forward and rewind are particularly useless with the hidden press. The design also does a poor job of orientation for front and back. More functions need to be transparent. The only improvement might be the recharging feature. This remote is designed more poorly than the first silver iteration in terms of user friendliness.

THIS LITTLE REMOTE WILL DRIVE YOU CRAZY!!!!!!!!

This is the absolute worst remote I've ever worked with. It wears my hand out clicking and you will miss half of your TV program just trying to get there. The remote came with no instructions. If I can find a better remote, this one goes in the garbage.

    Why

Who wants to swipe a quarter inch a thousand times to look around your apps? Obnoxious touch pad makes what was clicking a button 5 times more work.

The WORST Apple product ever made.

Who decided that this remote control was a good addition to the AppleTV? This is the worst product they've ever created. The remote is configured such that you have to look carefully in order to press the appropriate button. It's also incredibly sensitive and if you have it next to you and happen to get near it, the channels change, the applications exit, it's a mess. I seriously cannot imagine how Apple hasn't come up with something better. Very disappointing!

    Absolutely Terrible

As someone who has multiple Apple products and has always enjoyed using them, this remote has me baffled. It's the worst remote I've ever used to control anything. The trackpad is so sensitive and constantly registers the wrong commands, or over exaggerated the command such as with scrolling. If it even touches the sofa the wrong way, it will change apps or pause the show or something else unwanted. It is not user friendly in any way. While I have no problems with the Apple TV itself, I will most definitely be searching for an alternative remote to use. For any new purchasers, please take the remote into consideration before moving forward.

Needs to do only what it's told

There's a bad problem of uncommanded actions. For example, laying it gently on the sofa is not my secret way of asking, "Please fast-forward." Setting tracking to slow hasn't helped. Apple TV 4K, tvOS 11.4.1, remote firmware version 0x0100.

A lot left to be desired

Swiping the touch pad is nice for scrolling though content, but controlling media with it is problematic. Why not build a more standard remote? The touch pad is too sensitive. I'll barely swipe and it'll scroll multiple rows. It's too easy to accidentally do something like change the channel or stop the show with how large the touch pad is. Having to hold the edge of the touch pad to fast forward or rewind is a pain and I will sometimes have to hold it for a long time if a show didn't resume from where I left it. Plus there's only one forward/rewind speed. Pausing and swiping the touch pad to forward/rewind isn't intuitive. I should be able to click for different speeds and simply play when I click the play button when I find my position. It's cool that I can turn on the TV using the TV/Home button, but there's no way to control the input, so I end up having to use my other remote to change the input and therefore making the TV turn on feature only worth it if Apple TV was the only input I used. The Apple TV would be a much better product if the Siri Remote were more like the Amazon Fire TV Alexa remote that is much simpler to use.

Love it! Dont be stupid and so will you!

Love the product! Ive had one since the Apple TVs were released and only reason i had to replace is because it was lost in a move. Fail to understand how people break them unless they drop them off roofs or are just incompetent. Ive dropped mine feom waist high numerous times on my wood floor and not even a scratch.

    Really disappointed

I love Apple brand and products, An Apple fan, however this Siri remote control design is perverse. It Last a month once my 10 years old boy dropped On the carpet. Glass made without any protection is untouchable. Worst when I went to replace it in a authorized dealer in my country and they said I have to leave my broken remote control if I want one new....helloooo?? And then pay about us$90!!! Please review the design and allow us buy the remote control for less money or buy the old design which is all metallic and simpler. I do not recomend this control, and if you have opportunity buy the old model.

    Shatters

The remote is very fragile and shatters.... I understand, things happen but the replacement control is $60. That's not acceptable! We only have 1 Apple TV at home but when it breaks sticking to our Amazon Firesticks with durable controls! I did buy a silicone protective case for this. Crossing my fingers.

    Shatters!

I agree with those who don't appreciate that the remote is made with glass and shatters easily. Mine has many cracks and dangerously rough edges thanks to a short fall from the sofa to the floor. To add insult to injury, the price of a new one is $59.00. I also feel that the touch pad/control could be much improved. Apple has done a disservice to its customers by not updating this remote along with the newest Apple TV despite overwhelming customer dissatisfaction. It's almost as if they have chosen to sell a product so fragile that customers will need to buy replacements sooner or later. I have been an Apple customer for decades (iMacs and MacBooks, iPad, iPhones, Apple TVs), but this product has pushed me over as it shows Apples blatant disrespect for it's customers. The least it could do is give customers a credit towards a new remote for every cracked on that they turn in.

    Worst Remote Ever Made

Totally unstable. The way it was designed, it's difficult to tell which side is the top. The slightest touch to the remote will cause the TV to pause, stop, switch channels. Finally fell from the couch to the floor and shattered. My remotes from older Apple TVs work perfectly even after my dog chewed on it. Oh, and Siri is the worst!

Using this remote is a nightmare!

Seriously it’s the least user friendly remote ever for any device, the touchpad works different on every app, sometimes it’s just impossible to scroll 30 minutes in some video, or it scrolls insanely fast, you can’t distinguish the buttons, often pressing the TV icon instead of Volume Up, it keeps turning on the TV for every single accidental touch on the Remote and the worst is that it is made of glass, so it’s easily breakable forcing to treat it with extra care.
Just the worst remote ever, by far the worst thing about the new Apple TV, even the plain-old remote was better than this.

Zoom and 10 second fast forward conflict

The same button that you click three times to zoom is also the button you click when you want 10 second fast forward or rewind. Very frustrating trying to forward a bit and inadvertently zooming in.

    Stopped working

Great remote when it works. My remote won’t work at all, at first the down volume wouldn’t work not nothing will. Wish is didn’t cost so much to teplace a remote...the Apple remote app only connects some of the time and rarely will turn the Apple TV on. Great idea, cheap build.
