Celebrate Black History Month with an evening of spoken word by three of Oakland’s finest word magicians. Join playwright Dr. Ayodele Nzinga, actor Cat Brooks, and poet Tureeda Mikell as they perform verse that reflects modern black ideals. Followed by an Exclusive session about urban renewal and cultural resilience hosted by Dr. Nzinga with Cheryl Fabio and Tom Bowden.

Dr. Ayodele Nzinga, MFA, Ph.D.

Director and Playwright

Dr. Nzinga is the founding director of the Lower Bottom Playaz theater troupe. She is the artistic director of BAMBDFEST 2019, an arts festival in Oakland’s Black Arts Movement Business District.

Cat Brooks

Actress and Organizer

Cat Brooks is a playwright and member of the Lower Bottom Playaz and 3Girls Theatre Company. She is also co-founder of the Anti Police-Terror Project and finished second in Oakland’s 2018 mayoral election.

Tureeda Mikell

Poet, Storyteller, and Healer

Tureeda Mikell is an author, educator, and qigong energy therapist. She directs the Tree of Life Foundation Health Literacy Project, and was an Eth-Noh-Tec Nu Wa storytelling delegate in Beijing.
