AirPods

  • Overview

    Wireless. Effortless. Magical.

AirPods will forever change the way you use headphones. Whenever you pull your AirPods out of the charging case, they instantly turn on and connect to your iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad or Mac.(1) Audio automatically plays as soon as you put them in your ears and pauses when you take them out. To adjust the volume, change the song, make a call or even get directions, just double-tap to activate Siri.

Driven by the custom Apple W1 chip, AirPods use optical sensors and a motion accelerometer to detect when they’re in your ears. Whether you’re using both AirPods or just one, the W1 chip automatically routes the audio and engages the microphone. And when you’re on a call or talking to Siri, an additional accelerometer works with beamforming microphones to filter out background noise and focus on the sound of your voice. Because the ultra-low-power W1 chip manages battery life so well, AirPods deliver an incredible 5 hours of listening time on one charge.(2) And they’re made to keep up with you, thanks to a charging case that holds multiple additional charges for more than 24 hours of listening time.(3) Need a quick charge? Just 15 minutes in the case gives you 3 hours of listening time.(4)

The charge case with its tactile rounded edges and corners is a great place to keep them safe in a pocket or purse. Flip the lid and there they are nestling inside, ready for play and your iPhone is already paired. They also paired with my my iPad Air effortlessly and near intantaneously. No fiddling about in settings or entering code numbers is required. They fit my ears really well and show no signs of falling out though at my age I walk and do not jog. Given their price it would be fair to say I won't be taking these out on the ocean in my sea kayak though. The sound quality is superb especially considering that they are connected by bluetooth. Previous bluetooth earphones I have used have been a real faff to connect, the sound quality was tinny and they suffered frequent audio drop outs. Unlike some earphones, these do not seal your ear canal from the outside so if you are in a noisy environment, such as a busy road, they do let a fair bit of outside sound in. So if that is where you listen to music, you might be better with earphones which have soft rubber seals to keep road noise out. Not having to spend time untangling wires really sets you free and I certainly don't miss an earphone being tugged out by the wire that gets caught on a jacket when you take it off or turn your head etc. When I meet someone, I particularly love this feature: removing one AirPod causes the music to pause and you can have a chat. Then when you put it back in, the music starts again. If you chat too long the music stays paused but rather than getting the phone out of an inside pocket, you can just double tap the earphone to activate Siri and say "play". Unfortunately you need to be in WiFi range or have a decent phone signal for Siri to work. I have never used Siri on my iPhone, iPad or MacBook Pro, so for me the AirPods have proved to be the killer application to get me started using Siri. Making or receiving phone calls is also a breeze, double tap to start Siri and say "phone home" and that's it. The only downside (until they catch on) is that having two bits of white pasta sticking out your ears makes you look like a bit of an extra terrestrial. But at least they are not spaghetti like wires! It's good to see some innovation that has been really well implemented. They may be pricey enough to make your eyes water but at least your ears will be happy and free.

Flicked open the AirPod Case just to take a look and instantly my phone lit up with the connect screen, it is really that simple. I've owned these for about a month and I've found daily use with battey life brilliant for how small they are, the sound quality is amazing. The switch between iPad, Mac and even Apple TV is fluent and not a problem at all. I highly reccomend this product. Definitely worth more than £159 for the overall experience.

When I put the new AirPods in my ea I bought these AirPods because i get fed up with the corded type getting pulled from my ears every time I move in the chair! When I put the new AirPods in my ear for the first time I thought they will fall out but having tried to make them fall out they still stayed in place and after about 20 mins you wouldn't even know they were in. In my opinion worth every penny and absolutely delighted with my purchase.

Most important for me first and foremost was the sound and for an eternity I did not buy these believing that they would be too tiny, as they were not the In-ear "sealing" type (i.e. earphones that insert fully in the ear forming a seal with the rubberized soft section). Also I based the sound on the old classic wired EarPods which did sound painfully tinny to me. However the AirPods incredibly give quite a decent sound much to my surprise and relief! The shape and design of the Airpods are decent and small. The charging case is very well made and the AirPods get magnetically sucked into them rather nicely for storage and charging. The Airpods could do better though when using them with other devices apart from the usual Apple products, primarily with Windows laptops/tablets. After all the Airpods are using the Bluetooth "standard" which should work well with other devices incorporating the Bluetooth connection standard. They work for the most part but with both setup issues but more importantly it's during use that issues are experienced. Momentary loss of connection for one or both AirPods and initial delay in engaging sound/mic connection when using, i.e. Rosetta Stone on the PC may find the AirPods problematic as the AirPod's Mic may not kick-in quick enough from it's auto muting technology or noise cancelling technology. This makes the AirPods almost unusable for this, which is why I may be focusing on the Version 2 of AirPods when released.
