Q: USB thumb drive and iPhone 6

Using the Lightening to USB adapter MK0W2AM/A, and an iPhone 6+ iOS 11.0.3.   I am not able to use any of my thumb drives to move pictures to or from my phone.  The USB thumb drives work fine with my Mac.  I've reformatted the drives using ExFat, Mac OS and MS-DOS with the disc utility/erase.   Is this the correct adapter to connect a thumb drive to my iPhone?  If so, how can I determine if the problem lies with the adapter or the thumb drives ?

Q: Can a APFS formatted Thumb Drive be read by a mac running OS 10.9.5?

Because we are doing video work we CANNOT upgrade beyond OS 10.9.5. in our video editing lab, (10.9.5. is the last OS that will run iMovie HD 06.)  These OS 10.9.5 Macs are not networked in any way.   We have other Mac Pros running 10.12.6.  These all have the ability to upgrade to 10.13.  The concern is that we occasionally transfer files from Macs running 10.9.5 to Macs running the latest OS, and vice versa using a thumb drive .   If a thumb drive is formatted with APFS from a 10.13 Mac

Q: After installing HighSierra, the disk utility option to erase and reformat a MS-DOS thumb drive as "master bootable record" has disappeared. Is this option (needed for a music stick in my car) still available somewhere in the disk utility app?

In an attempt to restore my iMac, I have managed to erase the hard drive using disk utility but when prompted to reinstall lion, it states that the iMac needs verified with Apple via the app store, but my current apple id is not working. Someone has advised that the apple id needs to be the one used when setting up the machine originally, but I cant remember it as it was year's ago (? 2010). How can I over-ride this? Also, to make matters worse, I cannot contact apple directly as the serial
