  • Overview

The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter lets you connect Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices — such as external hard drives and Thunderbolt docks — to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports on your MacBook Pro.

As a bidirectional adapter, it can also connect new Thunderbolt 3 devices to a Mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port and macOS Sierra.

In addition, it can be used to connect Thunderbolt-enabled displays — such as the Apple Thunderbolt Display and LG Thunderbolt 2 displays — to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports on your MacBook Pro. However, using this adapter with an Apple Thunderbolt Display requires a power source, because the display does not provide power through the adapter.

Note: This adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays. For more information, visit the Apple Support page for the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter.

      Thunderbolt only, NOT DisplayPort

I bought this to use my existing monitor cable (Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort) with my new MacBook Pro (Late 2016). It doesn't work. You can use this ad I bought this to use my existing monitor cable (Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort) with my new MacBook Pro (Late 2016). It doesn't work. You can use this adapter to connect THUNDERBOLT devices to your brand-new MacBook Pro . It appears that you CANNOT use this to connect Mini-DisplayPort devices. I hope that this helps others considering the same thing.

Beware TB3 devices can need more power than TB2 supplies

Thunderbolt 3 is capable of delivering a lot more power than Thunderbolt 2 so may need more power than your Thunderbolt 2 port can supply. I know this to be the case with the Sonnet Fusion PCIe SSD Thunderbolt 3. If your Thunderbolt device has it's own separate power supply there is a chance it will work, but as per some recent articles in the mac press the new MacBook Pro will not support any currently on the market Thunderbolt 3 devices as they all use the Generation 1 Texas Instruments Thunderbolt controller. New products now reaching the market and due to appear from November 2016 onwards are more likely to include the Generation 2 Ti controller which is supported. I imagine this lack of compatibility might also reach backwards when trying to connect those TB3 devices to a TB2 equipped mac.

I can't as there is a software/compatibility issue, I have checked this on other Macbook's and Thunderbolt displays, this adaptor only works with Macbook Pros.

      Be wary

For the cost of this adapter you would expect it to bring your coffee as well as perform all connection functions you can think of. Especially in the aftermath For the cost of this adapter you would expect it to bring your coffee as well as perform all connection functions you can think of. Especially in the aftermath of limited connectivity, I'm all for going wireless but something things just need a wire, like a display! The holes fit so it it should work, yes? NO. Very expensive what it does.

It works if you know what you're buying

All the bad reviews of this product are people who don't know what monitor they own and/or don't understand what this adapter does. Thunderbolt 1 and 2 reuse All the bad reviews of this product are people who don't know what monitor they own and/or don't understand what this adapter does. Thunderbolt 1 and 2 reuses the Mini Display Port. Thunderbolt 3 uses USB-C. This adapter changes the USB-C Thunderbolt connection to a Mini Display Port Thunderbolt connector. It is NOT a USB-C Thunderbolt 3 to Mini Display Port connector. So, if your monitor uses a Mini Display Port input like the Apple Cinema Display, this will not work. Your monitor MUST use Thunderbolt as its input. I'm using it on dual 34" ultrawide LG monitors and these adapters work perfectly.
