Superb solution brings the iPad Pro 10.5 from tablet to mini laptop

But after a couple of w When I took delivery of my iPad Pro 10.5 I really wrestled with the concept of paying *another* £160 for a keyboard to compliment it. But after a couple of weeks, the new iPad (this is my fifth iPad since the launch in 2010) has really demonstrated that it's possible for an iOS device to replace my MacBookPro for many of the tasks I use it for. While on a business trip in Asia, I needed to type up some documents and found my laptop too heavy to lug around the mass transport system, from meeting to meeting. So I purchased the keyboard for my iPad and I've opened up a whole new world of useage for my iOS device. I'm sorry, I can't agree with the other reviews comments that the keyboard is an origami nightmare - it's not. With a simple flick to the left and then use your thumb to flip out the keyboard itself, just requires a twist to the wrist to align the iPad into the storage grove and hey presto - a tablet becomes a mini laptop. The feel of the keys is far better than I dared hope, and far far better after a few days than my first impressions in the Apple Store led me to believe. I'm writing this with my iPad and keyboard perched on a stool and it's perfectly useable. All in all, I think this device transforms and already superb tablet into a massively useful content creation device - and for this, it's worth the purchase price.

      Origami vs Functionality

As expected, the build quality is excellent and the 'snappy' connection feel solid. An oversight with many 3rd party producers of bluetooth keyboard cases is As expected, the build quality is excellent and the 'snappy' connection feel solid. An oversight with many 3rd party producers of bluetooth keyboard cases is that the keys often are in touch with the screen when 'closed up'. This can potentially allow things to be caught between keys and the screen a result in potential damage to your screen. This is not the case with the Apple Smart Keyboard and the way the keyboard folds back inside allows for the extra screen protection. This extra protections comes at a cost... It can sometimes feel like you are grappling with a piece of origami when either setting up or putting away. Resting on your legs with the keyboard can also be troublesome as it has a join which means it doesn't hold its own weight unless it is on a flat surface. (Think sitting up in bed using your knees as support) I would also still very much like to see some sort of integration options for the Apple Pencil. I have had to resort to a third party piece of elastic that does fit well to the Smart Case, but for £160 I think Apple could have better utilised the magnets to 'grip' the pencil or a sleeve on the depressed front of the case to store a pencil.

It is a bit like origami, but I was please it did everything I wanted; keyboard, proctecting the screen and separate charging i.e you do not have to charge it. The keyboard feels nice on the fingertips! Probably not something you think about, but when I'm in thought, I run my fingers over the keys - the equivalent to a fidget spinner or comfort blanket. The first review mentions there is nowhere for the pen to go, I agree it doesn't have it's own little pocket, but it does stick to the back of the keyboard when covering the screen or when you are using the keyboard you can tuck it behind the iPad in the triangle bit that holds up the iPad. I wish I could put up a picture up to show you. It's lightweight; slips into my handbag and can use it on the go, doesn't add much to weight to my bag like a normal laptop. I've used Logitech before which is a heavier but still great, however I think I prefer this. The proof is in the pudding and how long it will last for the amount of money I have paid.

Limited Life - Apple should admit the issue

What a disappointment. Apple need to admit that this product will last “about a year” and then stop working. Like many other reviewers on here - my Smart Key What a disappointment. Apple need to admit that this product will last “about a year” and then stop working. Like many other reviewers on here - my Smart Keyboard just lasted the warranty period and then stopped working all together. It was within 13 months of purchase and Apple store refused to replace/help. Usual nonsense about it being “not a known problem” and “normal wear and tear”. I had been in touch with them when it was 11 months old and I had started getting the accessory problem warning. They just went through a few simple fixes and it would connect for a while and then stop. It is frustrating that a company which makes so much of its reputation is prepared to allow such problems to continue. I was not even offered a discount on a new keyboard. I know it is a 12 month warranty period; i know that it is what we agree to when buying the product. However, this is a well documented issue. Please sell this item responsibly - be honest about these issues with your customers. This keyboard will likely last a year and you will then need to buy a new one. I also noted that the keyboard really drained the power after about 10-11 months.

Going by other reviews it seems the product does not have an acceptable useful life; unless you want to spend this on product that only lasts a year, be warned. Really like the button feedback (a bit loud clicky but satisfying if you’re the user :-))and the tactility is good, but construction quality is evidently poor.

I expected something better from Apple. They will not entertain a replacement as it is a month out of warranty. They even had the cheek to offer me a replacement for £130.00. Not a long term product in my opinion.
