The Smart Keyboard Folio for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation) is a full-size keyboard when you need it to be, provides elegant front and back protection when you don’t, and allows for convenient viewing angles. And with no charging or pairing required, just attach the keyboard and start typing.

The stand gives a reliable snap when putting the iPad in one of the two viewing angles, and the magnets hold the folio in place well. The problem is that it feels totally wrong - a plastic feeling outer material takes away from the iPad which is inside, and leaves a beautiful device feeling cheapened by what should be a touchable addition, rather than something which I quickly fold behind the display out of sight.

The keyboard is functional but to have to feel the keys when in a normal browsing orientation feels so very un-Apple. Also it feels like an oversight not to have function keys on an accessory for a 'pro' device. Please, please, please create a superior keyboard folio for the professionals you marketed the new iPad to.

Its not a mechanical keyboard like others available for the older model, and it has no backlighting either, but it feels pretty good to type on. Handy for longer emails and other duties. My main issue with the design is not the lack of lighting or the keys, but the fact that if you hold it in a traditional tablet way, you end up with your fingers that would normally rest on the back of the tablet hitting the keys. Thankfully that doesn't mean the key presses register as apple disable the keyboard in this position, but it feels awful. It also adds a fair bit of thickness to the overall shape. I would like to see the new model from Apple at least featuring some kind of backlit on the keys, for less than ideal lighting conditions. I appreciate that would likely reduce battery life a little, but having the option to have even a minor glow would be great. I think its pretty overpriced for what you get, and really only useful for those who need to type a lot on the iPad on the move, and who wont want to carry around a (typically better) bluetooth keyboard with them.

Feels cheap and the connection is sketchy

Similar issues remain here and it feels I had the previous version of this which had many issues to the point Apple extended the repair period for three years. Similar issues remain here and it feels even cheaper than the previous version! AVOID! There are better options, including writing by hand onto paper, taking a photo then throwing it in the bin.

      Rather good overall....

Incidentally, I also bought the pencil. I was impressed with the features it offered, and pleased to see it afforded protection for the back of the device too. And without adding much thickness - especially compared to a lot of third party ones. The iPad Pro remains highly portable and convenient to take with you everywhere. The typing experience took a few days of heavier use to acclimatise and the keys become much better with time as they wear in. I must admit that I rather winced at the price, considering that you can easily spend more than on a MacBook in the end! I think £149 would be more reasonable, or a discount when purchasing alongside the iPad. It would also be nice to have backlit keys and possibly a choice of colours and materials. Apart from the negatives above, and the not insignificant weight it adds, its a great piece of kit. In point of fact I’m beginning to use my MacBook Pro less and less.

It comes down to personal taste

For me, I love this keyboard! The helpful Apple in store elf allowed me to try several keyboard products with my new iPad Pro 12.9” and this one was by far the superior option. It is made for the iPad so everything clicks, magnetises and fits perfectly. It’s very streamlined. In comparison, the other options from different sellers were bulkier or just felt wrong. This one feels reassuringly strong and it’s incredibly light. No backlighting, but it’s not something I need so, again, it works for me. Looking at the keyboard in sunlight it seems to have a kind of ‘woven’ texture to the plastic which I guess is how they make it both light and strong. My only grumble is that when you fold the keyboard behind the iPad to write with the Apple Pencil, it’s a bit disturbing to the fingers because you feel the keyboard buttons and this provides a bumpy surface and slightly distracts from my experience of an otherwise smooth product. However, this doesn’t mess with the performance of the machine (the buttons don’t engage in this position) so it’s a small price to pay for a product that is superior, seamless and gives the iPad protection and immediate efficiency on the go. Price? It’s Apple. I just live with it. My advice is: go to the store, if you can, and try it out before you buy it. You’re either going to love it or hate it - and I love mine!
