It depends on the age of the MacBook Pro and what you plan to stream. MacBooks made in 2011 and later running Mavericks or Yosemite can use AirPlay to stream content to the Apple TV. This includes screen sharing which lets you use your MacBook like a Home Theater PC. MacBooks made before 2011 can still stream some content to an Apple TV. Using iTunes you can stream any content from iTunes from your MacBook to the Apple TV. You can also set up Home Sharing which allows you to use the Computers app in Apple TV to browse through your iTunes Libraries and play content from iTunes on your Apple TV.
