    Not fit for purpose

Just to add another voice to the tale of woes about the magsafe 2 chargers and the usual failed/frayed cable at the charger end. The product is not fit for purpose and at the very least Apple should offer a free replacement or repair service, not be charging 80quid for the pleasure of buying the same piece of junk. I do not understand how they can remain in complete denial about this failure mode. Shame on you Apple for releasing this garbage and then failing to do anything to acknowledge customer complaints.

    Lamentable quality

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro - top of the range laptop. The cabling to the Magsafe connector is fraying and supported with 'gaffa' tape.

I have a 2007 MacBook Pro (replaced by the one above) whose Magsafe wiring is still pristine.

The computer is utterly outstanding, the power supply cabling is reprehensible. Apple, what has happened to your quality control - you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves.

The general quality of Apple cables is also poor, with insulation breaking down far too quickly - what is going on?

£2000+ for quality such as this?

2nd time buying a replacement charger. Total rip off

These chargers get too hot to quickly. Also they are not durable. Mine is so frayed, I'm embarrassed to use it in public. They are NOT built to last and now I have to by a 3rd one. :-(

    utterly terrible!

Can't believe apple still haven't redesigned these. The fact that 90% of the reviews for this product are 1 star should be enough for apple to pay heed. They always break in exactly the same way with the joint next to the computer socket becoming frayed, even with light use and when well looked after. Having to pay £79 for a replacement on a fairly regular basis due to poor design is unacceptable. Apple have access to some of the most talented designers and engineers in the world... surely they can do better than this.

Here's a suggestion. As the power brick is the expensive component simply change the design so that the cable leading from the power brick to the computer is the interchangeable cable/extension. presto! The part that always breaks is now detachable and can be cheaply replaced without having to invest in a whole new power brick. surely this is obvious!?

Dangerous product - calling for 0 start option!!!

Too hot to touch after just 20 mins charging! Is there an alternative? Now reading these complaints really disappointed Apple not doing anything about this! Serious concerns re fire safely!!! This is a 3rd charger with same problems in under 4 years! Apple if you can't get your act together to produce a safe charger please get another company to do it on your behalf! Seems other companies have it worked out!

    Very hot, brittle and dangerous

I've been concerned for a a long time about the amount of heat this power adaptor generates. It has now split at the weak point (on the thinner cable) and seems to have shorted/fused. It's a potential fire hazard and not at all safe to leave unattended, which ruins the slick user experience associated with the majority of Apple's designs. I simply do not feel reassured about this adaptor in the same way I do about the £2500 worth of MacBook Pro it came with. Apple should be refunding dissatisfied customers for this huge mistake in their product line, and promise to build strong, safe power adaptors as a matter of priority.

    Expensive junk. Terrible design

This will be my 3rd replacement in 5 years. Even with relatively light use, and tape added to the weak point between the hard socket and soft cable to try to make it last a bit longer, don't expect it to last longer than 6 months. It is a terrible design, and grossly overpriced.

Expensive and substandard - where is the 0 star option?!

I am now on my third charger in less than two years. I would in AV so I know how best to handle cables. My partner is on her second charger in two years. Fraying at the same point every time (where cable meets adaptor) and constant overheating even with moderate use.

Paying close to 100€ every 15-16 months for a product that costs thousands is a disgrace. When the original MagSafe had a known similar issue with the cable fraying around the MagSafe adaptor a few years ago, it was recalled. With so many people online and in store having exactly the same issue, why is this product not being recalled or radically redesigned?

Likely because of Apple's growing contempt for, and arrogance towards, its loyal customer base. Maybe time for that loyalty to end soon and I'm definitely reflecting on alternative options.

    Awful.

I'd rate this product 0 stars if I could. I have had to replace so many chargers since I have bought my macbook at least one every year the previous the most recent replacement was no longer within the warranty so I had to pay for a new one. It has just broken (overheated) again and I am going to have to pay yet again. I find it ridiculous for the amount of money I have to pay. I'd happily pay it if i knew this was a one off issue but it is reoccurring. Time to change to PC?

Forced to buy 3rd one in less than 3 years

For the price, they should last at least as long as the MacBook. I have never had to replace any charger for any other laptop ever.

What is the matter with Apple?

This morning my 4th charger of this type failed. Why is it Apple can produce the most beautifully made laptops but the chargers are complete rubbish? It wouldn't be so bad if the price was reasonable but it isn't. Apple - if you charge a high price we expect quality, sort out your quality control on these chargers.

Great laptop let down by dreadful power supply

My 15" MBP Retina is now just over 2 years old and I am on my third power adapter. This is not a computer that is used every day - it comes out for an hour every Saturday morning to make some changes to a website. So many other people seem to be having unsatisfactory experiences with this product I'm surprised Apple haven't redesigned it and recalled older ones.
My main computer is a 9 year old white MacBook which is still on its original charger. Something is wrong here.....

Poor quality, 3rd power adapter so far.

This is my 3rd Power adapter since purchasing my 2014 MacBook Pro. The power adapter gets incredibly hot! The last two started to smell of burning and you could actually hear them fizzle inside before burning out.
As a potential hazard and simply been left unable to do my job, till i've coughed up another £80. As a professional user, the disappointment i have in the brand after being a loyal customer for 20 years continually grows.

    Very poor quality

The design and quality of this product is very poor. It overheats and the cable frays, even with careful use. To make matters worse, it is ridiculously expensive. Does little to promote the image of Apple products.

On my Third Charger now - They are rubbish !!!!

For someone known for good design, Apple must have all bee on holiday they day they designed this!
The cable starts to come apart from the magsafe connector in less than a year, & then shortly after that the white outer cover starts to break up close by too.
For a charger costing £80 this is just rubbish
Shame you cannot give zero stars

DEFECT CAUSES CHARGER TO BURN AND MELT

About every two years I need to get a new charger because the cable melts and sparks.

Lucky I have been in the same room when noticing this and to avoid further damage, like my house burning down.

    Will break eventually

The macbook pro retina charger is very much form over function. More so than the laptop itself. Mine lasted about 27 months with diy duct tape repairs at both the magsafe end and the power cord end. If you have to replace this don't go to the apple store first. I got one from a very popular high street electronics store for £30 and its pretty much brand new. Apple should not be charging these ridiculous prices for a charger from a previous generation laptop.

Another year, another replacement charger, another £80 :'(

To anyone who rated this product more than 1 star... what were you thinking? Shocking that replacement chargers aren't free, there is clearly an issue with the design... admit it apple!!!

    It's great but…

I do love Apple. Their products are so nicely designed and are convenient. For example the mag safe feature has saved my MacBook countless times from flying onto the floor. This charger did last me about 2 years but went out with a bang. From what I can tell it overheated and shorted out. Baring in mind that it was not in a enclosed location, and was exposed to open air and a free flow of air; I was kind of disappointed. Then further looking at the cost to replace it I was even more disappointed. I don't know if this issue has been fixed with the new USB-C charger but if it hasn't I feel it should be taken into consideration that these chargers do have a tendency to overheat and potentially short.

Overall this is a great charger but bare in mind overheating is an issue.

Can this be made better please?

I've lost count of the number of these chargers i've had to buy over the years.

They all go in the same two places. Either the cable coming out of the adaptor frays. Admittedly they are better than they used to be in this aspect. Or mainly the pins that power the laptop push in and don't connect.

Please sort it out or charge less for it!
