My second lightning to USB cable fraying at the lightning end in 20 months

The first cable I had frayed less than two years old. It frayed at the lightning end. I thought it was me pulling the cable off wrongly . Hence when I bought the second lightning cable I was very careful to pull the cable out by putting my fingers on the hard white plastic. Nevertheless it has frayed at the same place after 18months. These lightning to USB cables are now cheaply and poorly made and not worth replacing with another Apple cable.
Sadly I will look elsewhere to replace this.

Haven't had any problems so far

I've read plenty of reviews saying that Apple's Lightning cables are awful and break easily, but I honestly haven't had any problems with my cable so far, and I've had it for around 1.5 years, plugging it in far more frequently than most people would due to the not very long battery life of my iPod touch. To be honest, my cable looks almost just as good as it did when it was brand new.
The only bad part of these cable are that they are slightly overpriced, but they're made by Apple, so that's probably why.

    Try it & see

There isn’t a bigger sceptic than me. I was 100% with the two for £5 brigade. I think over the years I’ve got through more of these moody ones than I can remember. Last Monday, I went into the local Apple shop & was heartbroken and having to part with nearly £30 nicka for one cable. The moody ones were getting so hot it did genuinely concern me. All the stories on hear about yes they’re wonderful or terrible. In my humble opinion, the difference in terms of manufacturing (being tangible I mean) the difference is remarkable. I’m in no way condoning the RRP for the product, how can a cable cost nearly £30 nicka which would cost no more at guesstimiation in the little people land 50p to produce. The quality is immediate once you open the box. We all know Apple is top draw & essentially you get what you pay for. It’s top quality & everything just works as we all know. The moody cables are more than likely made in the same sweatshop anyway. I’m not justifying their price in anyway, however I thing if treated more carefully & respect this should be ok for a few years. Why on earth would anybody wear a Rolex???? It’s essentially ostentatious & in your boat. I’d take Patek Philippe everyday.

Best of what I used so far

I am using this cable since a year and no issues so far. Pleased with its length, made my phone usage comfortable that I don't have to stick close to the socket. I would recommend it.

No problems with Apple cable I bought

Purchased Apple 2m cable and adaptor over a year ago with new iPad Pro. Not had any problem with it. I tend to leave cable plugged in to adaptor and just plug other end into iPad when needed. I think if you handle it gently it shouldn’t come apart as some people have experienced. I also bought a 1m cable and adaptor from another company to use elsewhere. Yes, it was cheaper but I find the cable too short to plug in directly to wall socket if I want to use iPad whilst it’s charging. Have to plug in to an extension socket. Also the cheaper one takes ages to fully recharge the iPad even when not in use. I suppose you get more reviews from unhappy customers to complain and there are many more satisfied customers who don’t bother to send a review.

Apple needs to improve this urgently

I was forced to purchase another 2m iPad cable approximately three months ago, it has already started to fray and I will need to replace it yet again! iPads are premium products and yet the charger quality seem no better than something I would buy at a thrift shop. This is disgraceful, whilst I am sure this increases the profit margin for the company, heavy users of their iPads (like myself) are being pressed. I depend on my iPad as a disabled person I can't get out and about, I certainly shouldn’t have to (and can’t afford to) keep replacing such an essential part of kit!

One star because that’s the lowest I can go

I have bought four of these cables @ £29 each within six months, I go to my local pound shop, for cables, I am still on my first cable from the pound shop 9 months later, so I wouldn’t waste my money on a cable that cost me £29 over one that costs me £1

    RUBBISH

3rd charger I've had now. These are so poorly made it's unbelievable. Not the standard you used to expect from Apple but this seems to be the way these days. Plus the price has increased AGAIN. I used to think I'd always be an Apple user, but it's all these little things that make me think they're getting a bit too big for their boots.

    Dreadful.

This is truly awful. After about 3 months the plastic at the lightning end comes off and the wires start to fray and pull out rendering it useless. I have gone through about 9 of these since Jan 2015. It's not a case of 'being careful' when pulling the wire out, it seems any contact with the lightning be weakens it.

    Mine lasted years!

My cable has lasted years. If you hold the part that plugs into the phone rather than the wire, then your charger will last 10 times longer.

Poor quality for company that should know better.

Bought third party 3m cable, then update made it inoperable with my Apple products. Bought this item so to keep with official mechandise, and the cable split after just shy of six months use?

£25+ ... this is not acceptable quality.

    Not durable

I am just about to order my 4th cable in 2 1/2 years. Last year a 2m cable was £25, this year it's £29.
The one I am using at present is a 2m cable and the casing has split.
Prior to this I had a 1m cable, the wire was obviously damaged and it started smoking, so I binned it, quickly!

    Good quality cable

I have two of these (used in different places), they are about a year old and I haven't had any problems with either. The 2m cables are slightly heavier duty than the 1m and to me look well made and fairly strong. Apart from myself my wife and daughter have also used Apple products for many years and have never had a cable fray or fail - I have had one iPad charger that died though. The only time I've had to replace a cable is after my daughter lost one.

I only ever pull from the plug - never, ever the cable. I also sometimes use my iPad whilst it's charging (so my cables do get movement).

I don't work for Apple and I'm not paid for this review.
