Perfect replacement - a step up from older model

    • Written by Mark B from Rotherham

Wanted to give a bit of background, I am a professional writer, so my keyboard is pretty important to me. Around 6 months ago I ended up with a new keyboard after my previous keyboard got wet (disaster)!

So I went to the Apple store and bought a new one. My old one was more angled, due to the battery storage, so the angle was something I had to get used to. There were also two other major changes. The buttons were more low profile, so they were closer to the aluminum board. The benefit of this is it is much easier to clean, so in 6 months time you won't be left with a horrible keyboard. The spacing of the keys is also a lot better in my opinion, as they are slightly closer together.

This isn't where the benefits end. The battery life on this is nothing short of amazing. With writing so much, I'd expect to have to charge this every 48 hours, most of the time I'm looking at weeks between each charge.

Sorry for the reality check, but anyone who is complaining about the noise of the keys has a terrible typing technique. Skimming the buttons with a light touch means that you can type really quietly. If you are dropping your fingers from 3/4cm then it is going to make a fair amount of noise. That isn't the keyboards fault, more your heavy fingers :)

    A fantastic keyboard

    • Written by Maxime R from London

    Things I like:
    - The key-feel and overall typing experience is the best I've come across - and I've gone through a fair few chiclet / cherry mx / topre keyboards in my quest for typing perfection! This keyboard is quiet and free of annoying 'clacks' (which some keyboards are bad for; particularly with the space bar), however on firmer key presses there is a satisfying click as the key bottoms out. The key travel is (imo) excellent; not far enough to cause strain to the wrists as I have experienced after extended use of mechanical keyboards, however long enough to feel the key register properly (unlike perhaps the newer MacBook Pros' keyboards).
    - The key layout (on the British English variant in my case) is also great - particularly, I like how Apple places the backslash / vertical pipe key (\|) to the left of the enter key (which makes writing LaTeX and shell scripts much more ergonomic) as well as the position of the tilde / backtick key (~`) under the left pinky (rather than in the top left which is often a bit of a stretch). While the physical surfaces of the keys are flat (some folks prefer them slightly concave; I don't mind), the surface available to type on is very large (larger than most mechanical keys caps) which has increased my typing accuracy and speed somewhat. The glorious size of the escape key will also please vim users who haven't re-mapped it to something else already :)
    - Setup is a breeze, with no configuration to do for both MacOS and Linux when using the lightning to USB cable. Bluetooth setup on both operating systems is equally trivial and pain free.

    Things I don't like:
Perhaps the construction could be slightly sturdier; there is a slight flex in the keyboard although that said, I appreciate the portability and lightness.

    Best Bluetooth Keyboard Out There

    • Written by Logan S from Gilbert

I bought this Bluetooth keyboard when using my MacBook Pro with an external monitor and couldn't be happier. The keyboard is the exact same size and the one on the MacBook Pro (possibly other MacBooks as well) so you do not have to keep switching back and forth between layouts, but can get used to the same exact distance and spacing between keys, allowing you to always type very quickly. Additionally, the feel of the keys is very similar to the MacBook Pro 2015, with a similar travel distance, which gives a nice feel when typing, better than the butterfly keyboards of the newer models in my opinion. This is probably not a good keyboard if you like the feel of mechanical keyboards, but if you want an external keyboard that has the feel and efficiency of a top-of-the-line laptop keyboard this is the only one that you should consider. While it is definitely expensive compared to other external keyboards, which can cost as little as $10, this is certainly my top pick, even over the Apple numeric keyboard, due to issues I have heard related to bending, and the more minimalistic feel given by excluding the number pad that I would hardly use anyway.

    Fab key board

    • Written by Nadeem M from London

The feedback is mixed but I think that reflects a lot of personal preference and writing styles with keyboards.

I had the older more angled battery one - I let it down by leaving it dormant in a box during a long move, and the batteries leaked out.

I use the large iPad PRO, and never liked any of the attachable keyboards.

I bought the most fabulous stand from a German-Italian wood product company - Yohann. Now I have the keyboard, and it feels brilliant. The writing experience is very positive. The keys are responsive and have improved my typing. Like all Apple products, the keyboard is a pleasure to handle and move around. It’s simplicity, shape and easy to charge system - I think its better than the older version, Much better.

Always cheaper options out there. Buy cheap. Cry everyday. Buy quality. Cry once.

    A Rather Nice Upgrade

    • Written by David S from Eyemouth

Having used the previous generation of Wireless keyboards from Apple, both the original 3 AA battery and the revised 2 AA battery version, I was a little curious to see what this latest generation would offer, so I bought one.

First thing first. The packaging, build and feel is totally Apple. It is lovely.

So, connected up to charge onto my iMac, the keyboard instantly paired and sorted itself out, so when I unplugged it once it had finished charging, the keyboard was already wirelessly paired and working without issue.

Keys: in a word, different. They don't have as much travel as the previous generation, but after a couple of hours use, I absolutely love them. I can type much faster with fewer mis-hits. The keys don't wobble as much as the previous generation and feel great.

So, if you are wondering about an upgrade from the previous generation, I would say, despite the higher price tag, it's a much better experience to use and makes my older iMac feel a little bit newer.

    • Written by Alexander P from Norwich

As with all of the many Apple products I buy this is another superb addition to the Apple accessory line up for Mac. I fully recommend this to anyone who is looking to buy a Mac as this keyboard is a definite must have! Excellent built quality, superb craftsmanship and really solid. Very impressed.

    Excellent

    • Written by Connor C from Dukinfield

I have used this keyboard everyday for around six months and it feels great to type on. I have used it not only with my Mac but my iPad also whilst in college. I would definitely recommend to anyone who does a lot of writing. The only issue is that the Caps lock key isn't the best as you have to press slightly harder than the others.

    Very happy

    • Written by Mark O from Plymouth

I have been using both versions of the Magic keyboards and after 6 months i must say i think the newer model is much better. Key are responsive and have a great feel.

It does take a bit to get use o but if you can stick with it then i think you will be very happy using this keyboard.

One thing i would like to see is a bigger version with the number pad added to it.

    A Magic Experience.

    • Written by Neil S from Heanor

I've had my eye on the new Magic Keyboard since they were announced and have finally gotten around to purchasing one.

Granted the shallower keys take some time to adjust to but I have to say the wider buttons in a smaller body are very much welcome.

Feels solidly made and like the fact I can charge my Keyboard whilst using it still-and that if I ever lose my original Lightning Cable I can use one of the spare ones from my iPhone/iPod/iPad.

Would've been nice to have a backlit option (perhaps in Space Grey) but those are minor quibbles.

    misleading reviews

    • Written by Lynne G from Chatham

read the previous review about noisy keyboard and nearly didn't buy it, but went ahead anyway as can't use mac without it and I'm very pleased I did, it's really quiet just the same as my old one, which I unfortunately spilt a drink on while trying to get to the phone. yes I would have like it to be cheaper obviously, but it's great, easy to set up quiet, easy to use and very sleek, only worry is the integral battery and how long before I have to replace the keyboard when it stops charging. apart from that, very happy

    Excellent Keyboard

    • Written by Harvey D from Gravesend

The keyboard is very pleasant to type on, build quality is 10 out of 10, charging is such great feature and fast too.
If you need a keyboard whether wireless or wired, just get this. Such a good quality keyboard and I can't find a con so far.

    The perfect keyboard

    • Written by Giles C from Abergavenny

Reading the reviews, this new keyboard from Apple seems to bring out strong opinions! I definitely fall into the best-hardware-they've-ever-made camp on this one. It's a superb keyboard: precise, low travel (but enough), a delightful firm feeling to each key press, lightweight & robust enough to chuck it in a bag to use with an iPad, instant to pair, easy to charge – it even has a proper on/off switch… it's the gold standard of keyboards. Using the keyboard on my MacBook Air makes me very sad now – it just feels horrible & spongy in comparison. It makes me want a new Retina MacBook with the similar keyboard… maybe that was Apple's idea all along?

    A Great Keyboard

    • Written by knight R from xi'an

I decided to buy one some days before, because my old Macbook pro 13 is too hot for typing. Now I can type quicker using this keyboard. In addition, I found a keyboard cover on amazon which can be used for this new keyboard.

    • Written by michael A from london

Very stylish keyboard is this, its silent, I dont know whar some reviewers mean by noisy.
Lovely feel to it. Easy to install too.

However, I cant find how to check the battery level, yet!
So I am not sure how long it lasts.

Other than that, great! Pricey though.

    Great Keyboard

    • Written by Elaine T from LONDON

I decided to buy one of these only yesterday, largely because the Logitech one I have been using has been playing up. Not disappointed. In fact, I'm really pleased with it because I find it a vast improvement to the last one and to the older, battery operated, Apple keyboard that I use solely for my iPad.
It is light, but I don't find that an issue. The keyboard is very smooth, so it would seem the improved mechanism works well. The layout is exactly the same as any other Qwerty board I have ever owned.

    I would definitely recommend it.

    Loving it

    • Written by Patsy M from Helensburgh

My magic keyboard arrived this morning (extremely fast delivery) and so far I'm very impressed. It was easy to set up and having read some reviews can't understand about the noise - what noise? It's very elegant and hopefully will do what it says on the tin! I'm finding typing on it just as good as any keyboard I've ever used.

Does what it says on the can, except perform Magic

    • Written by Stephen C from Brighton

I'm not sure what people expect from this, I think some actually are disappointed it doesn't perform magic. It's a small keyboard, it actually feels better to it's predecessor and feels more solid. Rechargeable battery is excellent, the only thing I would say is that there's not indicator for when the keyboard it fully charged. It's easy to pair with devices. I only have it paired to my Macbook Pro, I just wanted a small keyboard for when I used my TV as a monitor. I have big mitts, and the keyboard is perfect size for me, I'm not sure why there are so comments that it's too small. I think a lot more people should actually try before buying, go to an apple store, it saves a lot of pain. Again, too many comments about noisy keys, utter rubbish. It's no noisier than using the keyboard on my Macbook. Keyboard is well made, value for money.

    Another solid Apple product

    • Written by Nick H from keighley

I have had this keyboard for a few days now, and I have found that I can type much faster on this keyboard because of the lower key travel. As most other reviews have said, this new version is louder to type. But I quite like the noise, each key makes a satisfying tap to compensate for the lower key travel. The lower key travel does make they keyboard much easier to use, and is defiantly an upgrade from my wired apple keyboard with the num pad.
Although, the only thing I would want it to do is be able to act as a wired keyboard through the lightning cable, as at work we have really rubbish keyboards, but no bluetooth, therefore I'd love to be able to simply plug this keyboard into my work computer and continue to use it there.

This is another great product from apple. Im not sure it's worth £79 however at least when you buy from apple you can rest assured that you are buying quality and that the product is designed by Jony Ive!
