Superb solution brings the iPad Pro 10.5 from tablet to mini laptop

    • Written by Philip T from Warsash

When I took delivery of my iPad Pro 10.5 I really wrestled with the concept of paying *another* £160 for a keyboard to compliment it.

But after a couple of weeks, the new iPad (this is my fifth iPad since the launch in 2010) has really demonstrated that it's possible for an iOS device to replace my MacBookPro for many of the tasks I use it for.

While on a business trip in Asia, I needed to type up some documents and found my laptop too heavy to lug around the mass transport system, from meeting to meeting. So I purchased the keyboard for my iPad and I've opened up a whole new world of useage for my iOS device.

I'm sorry, I can't agree with the other reviews comments that the keyboard is an origami nightmare - it's not. With a simple flick to the left and then use your thumb to flip out the keyboard itself, just requires a twist to the wrist to align the iPad into the storage grove and hey presto - a tablet becomes a mini laptop. The feel of the keys is far better than I dared hope, and far far better after a few days than my first impressions in the Apple Store led me to believe. I'm writing this with my iPad and keyboard perched on a stool and it's perfectly useable.

All in all, I think this device transforms and already superb tablet into a massively useful content creation device - and for this, it's worth the purchase price.

Perfect complement to the iPad Pro

    • Written by Jason T from BRISTOL

Like many others, I was hesitant to fork out an extra £160 on top of the iPad Pro... but I'm totally glad I did. The design of this PERFECTLY complements the iPad Pro 10.5 inch. It's incredibly lightweight it allow you to keep it attached when you're not using the keyboard part. It protects the iPad screen really well when not in use. A pleasure to type with. And you don't need to worry about batteries or bluetooth... it all draws it's power from the magic connector - which magically and satisfiably snaps together. It folds really nicely offering a stand as well.

If I was to provide some constructive feedback to Jony and the design team, I'd suggest the next version has the option to make the keys glow if needed. Unfortunately it's very difficult to type in the dark as the screen isn't angled well enough to shine onto the keyboard. But if you won't be solely typing in the dark, then this won't be an issue for you!

If you have the iPad Pro, you need this smart keyboard in your life!

    The perfect addition!

    • Written by Emily P from Ipswich

This unique keyboard is a true delight! It takes a little adjusting from using normal keyboards but soon you’ll get in the swing of using it. Typing is efficient and quick. Once you get your head around setting the keyboard to your iPad, you’ll be flipping it out in no time. The feel of the key board panels are nice and smooth, only draw back would be the back space not being quick enough when going back on text. Other than that I am enjoying using the iPad Pro and this keyboard very much!

    Exceeds expectations

    • Written by Alison S from Magherafelt

This keyboard is simple to connect and use. I haven’t had a problem with the so-called origami design. It is responsive and I can type really quickly on it. I wasted money on a Bluetooth one and wish I had bought this one first. You get what you pay for as the adage goes.

    Be patient

    • Written by Linda B from Little Neston

It took me a while to get to grips with how the keyboard connected to the iPad. After reading the first review and going online it became apparently clear. It is a bit like origami, but I was please it did everything I wanted; keyboard, proctecting the screen and separate charging i.e you do not have to charge it.

The keyboard feels nice on the fingertips! Probably not something you think about, but when I'm in thought, I run my fingers over the keys - the equivalent to a fidget spinner or comfort blanket.

The first review mentions there is nowhere for the pen to go, I agree it doesn't have it's own little pocket, but it does stick to the back of the keyboard when covering the screen or when you are using the keyboard you can tuck it behind the iPad in the triangle bit that holds up the iPad. I wish I could put up a picture up to show you.

It's lightweight; slips into my handbag and can use it on the go, doesn't add much to weight to my bag like a normal laptop. I've used Logitech before which is a heavier but still great, however I think I prefer this. The proof is in the pudding and how long it will last for the amount of money I have paid.

    Excellent

    • Written by James S from Oxford

Fittingly, I write this review using the product in question.

Excellent quality and feel out of the box, neatly presented as you would expect. Arrives essentially without instructions, which is testament to its straightforward operation – a strong magnetic connector pairs the keyboard with the iPad instantly, providing everything it requires and freeing you from any need to charge the thing independently. Both of its sanctioned positions (upright, with and without keyboard) are easy to get in and out of, and provide a solid footing and tolerable working angle.

It’s interaction with the software (on screen) keyboard is well thought out and intuitive – the software automatically hides itself when you’re using the Smart Keyboard as you’d expect, but handily reappears when you want to use emoji etc. Hold ⌘ to view keyboard shortcuts for the current app. ⌘ + space to open Spotlight on the Home Screen makes it easy to jump to apps without needing to poke at the screen.

I find the keyboard itself pleasant enough to type on. It certainly has more travel and click than I had anticipated considering its form. I’ve tried it out on a table, on the floor, in bed and on my lap – all painless enough, though you might expect to miss a key or two on the softer or more uneven surfaces, as the plastic construction and ‘hinged’ assemblage does have some give in it.

All around a solid device that makes a great productivity-boosting addition to iPad Pro. A star docked for its lack of a place to put Apple Pencil, and for being a touch heavier than would be ideal. A little pricy too but, provided it lasts the test of time, a cost that I expect to be repaid by its contribution to versatility and convenience.

Great product, but not quite up to Apple standard

    • Written by Connor W from Evergreen

This keyboard is so comfortable to type and work on, even on my lap. However, after a few months the corners began to fray, and loose strings started poking out of the edges. I am still pleased with my purchase, but I feel Apple didn’t work as hard to make sure it didn’t fray. I wish the keyboard was made out of something more durable, but would still recommend this product.

    Good keyboard - useless support

    • Written by KEITH M from Shoreham By Sea

The keyboard's good. Lacks backlighting however. Magnets work better than the Apple cover. Pairs well with the Tech21 hard back protector.

It does not work like a Mac keyboards, so don't be misled.

The instructions "Switch from your SMART Keyboard etc" are wrong. For a start you only get a partial IOS keyboard bar. Showing the text/spelling choices or username/password options. There is no down v on the keyboard, it is actually the 'globe/world' key you use to 'toggle' this onscreen bar. When you first use it it gives you a keyboard choice dropdown. After selecting the keyboard (usually the language of choice) you want from a pop up menu the emoji screen remains. If you press the keyboard symbol (bottom right) it will toggle off immediately. You have to press the 'ABC'. It will disappear, but whenever you normally have the option bar in IOS it will appear again.

To cancel the bar when it pops up press the down v in the right hand corner. You may have to re-toggle to get it to work again.

Apple need to train their support staff about this. I spent a wasted hour going through it with two of them!!! They hadn't even seen the keyboard!

    Origami vs Functionality

    • Written by Christopher H from Water

As expected, the build quality is excellent and the 'snappy' connection feel solid.

An oversight with many 3rd party producers of bluetooth keyboard cases is that the keys often are in touch with the screen when 'closed up'. This can potentially allow things to be caught between keys and the screen a result in potential damage to your screen. This is not the case with the Apple Smart Keyboard and the way the keyboard folds back inside allows for the extra screen protection.

This extra protections comes at a cost... It can sometimes feel like you are grappling with a piece of origami when either setting up or putting away.

Resting on your legs with the keyboard can also be troublesome as it has a join which means it doesn't hold its own weight unless it is on a flat surface. (Think sitting up in bed using your knees as support)

I would also still very much like to see some sort of integration options for the Apple Pencil. I have had to resort to a third party piece of elastic that does fit well to the Smart Case, but for £160 I think Apple could have better utilised the magnets to 'grip' the pencil or a sleeve on the depressed front of the case to store a pencil.

    No foreign characters!!

    • Written by Mike H from GLASGOW

Nice keyboard, but nowhere did the description warn me in advance that there were no foreign characters/accents available when typing with it!! Useless for a full time translator ...

Not the "international" standard I was expecting from Apple ...

    Lovely keyboard if it lasted

    • Written by charlotte G from southampton

These keyboards are fantastic to use when they are working. I like the feel of the keys to type on and light weight cover for the iPad. I agree a holder for the pencil would be useful. My issue is I have had 2 keyboards now and owned an iPad pro for 18 months, neither have lasted more than 9 months - the keys stop being picked up by the iPad and i get a symbol that says this accessory is not compatible. Its alot of money for so short a lifespan. Im currently looking for alternative solutions that may last a little longer.

Completely overpriced - even for Apple standards

    • Written by Matthias M from Peterborough

The keyboard is of very inferior quality if compared to 3rd party products. The overall feel is extremely cheap. It does not cover your iPad smoothly, and when used on an even desk surface it is wobbly rather than flat.
The only good point, with it being an Apple product, it works flawlessly with the iPad from the first minute.
However, it is nowhere near worth the crazy amount of money Apple is asking for!

A good first effort, but lots of room for improvement

    • Written by Gero V from London

A good first effort, but I think there is a lot of rooom for improvement on version 2. Quality isn’t fantastic - it feels like it will last, which is good, but its not very refined - for example, the edges of the case/keyboard are sharp enough to cut you. The finish is OK, but pretty basic - a fabric finish would have been nicer and more in keeping with the apple brand. It’s very noisy... really noisy.. enough that colleagues comment when you are tapping away in meetings (don’t sit next to the telecom mic!!). Hopefully I will get quieter with time! I think the lack of travel doesn’t really help. I don’t see why the keyboard could not have been larger - i’m Sure the origami design would allow for this and it would have been nicer to have at least 1 more row of keys for inclusion of short cuts (lifting your hand up to the screen is slow and cumbersome). The lack of backlit keys limits the lusefullness of the keyboard to. Overall, its basic, but get the job done in a portable design. If you are trying to get some serious typing done however, i’d Look for alternatives!

    Sorry not good enough

    • Written by Matthew M from Yeovil

I bought one of these for my iPad Pro about a year ago and it has already failed. When attached, it continually disconnects and reconnects and so renders the product useless as you have the screen keyboard popping up then disappearing constantly. This is the first apple ‘product I have ever been disappointed by.

    Does not last

    • Written by Stephen E from bath

Does not last! We bought this product about a year ago not sure if it was the hot weather on the holiday but on the hinge side where it attached to the iPad it lost all its shape and I will not stay on properly, pretty useless after one year, waste of money.

Loved my keyboard until it packed up...

    • Written by Maria B from Gotherington

Great product but extremely expensive as once the 1 year warranty is over, the keyboard only works intermittently, and sometimes wont work at all.
I have tried all the suggested fixes and the keyboard has not been damaged and has been treated carefully.
My keyboard is just under two year old and with careful use I would expect it to have a much longer life!

    Not Impressed

    • Written by KEITH W from Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Worked well for 13 months, the case is is coming apart and "accessory not supported" message showing all the time. The keyboard will not work at all. I feel cheated after paying top money. I expected something better from Apple. They will not entertain a replacement as it is a month out of warranty. They even had the cheek to offer me a replacement for £130.00. Not a long term product in my opinion.

Literally coming apart at the seams after a year.

    • Written by Andrew C from LONDON

So, for £159... the product Is a year and 3 months old (so conveniently just out of warranty) and now the side seam of the keyboard is ungluing where the air holes were... it;s not physical damage, it lives in an ipad case and the corresponding part of the fold is not damaged either it didn’t receive a blow or constant rubbing; just ungluing - literally coming apart at the seams.

Going by other reviews it seems the product does not have an acceptable useful life; unless you want to spend this on product that only lasts a year, be warned.
Really like the button feedback (a bit loud clicky but satisfying if you’re the user :-))and the tactility is good, but construction quality is evidently poor.

    Don’t buy it

    • Written by Josh L from Fordingbridge

I bought this apple keyboard not once but twice and each time it’s has given me problems. Not so much with the usability side of it but more so when you connect it to the iPad. My advice is to look else where for another brand of keyboard and not to waste your money on this one.

    Good but doesn’t least.

    • Written by Robert L from Wakefield

I bought one of these just over a year ago to team up with my new 10.5 iPad Pro and iPencil. Worked great for about 10 months and then stopped.

Went back to the Apple store where it came from and explained/complained and they ordered a new one.

This worked fine for about three months until I started getting the “accessory not supported” notice and this has packed up as Wellington the last month or so, when I was abroad working!

This is very poor considering the cost of the keyboard cover, I do not expect an expensive product from a world leading manufacturer to become unusable after such a short time.

During my conversation when I replaced it, I got the impression that it is a commonly known fault and possible based around where the keyboard folds along the ‘hinge’ line. Perhaps the thin wiring in here breaks easily?

If this is known then I suggest that it is sold as “Not fit for purpose” and we should get a refund or lifetime replacements.

I will be going back to complain again but recall being told that as a replacement it would not have the 12 month guarantee so it makes you wonder how many they expect to break!

Being a long time Apple user and having numerous Apple products, this is the first time I have been dissatisfied with one of their products.
