Connection flakey, keyboard travel too short

    • Written by David M from King's Lynn

I have a full size wired Apple Keyboard at home and I love it. For work I have always wanted a full-size wireless keyboard, so when Apple (finally) brought out this one I bought it. Only I wish that i had not. The connection is so flakey that I keep it connected at all times with the USB-lightning connector that it came with, and the key travel is just that little bit too little so that while I can type just fine it is a welcome relief to go back home and use the older keyboard.

This is not a case of "not getting use to it". I have had the new keyboard at work for months, working 8 + hours a day and only use the home keyboard now a couple of hours a week. But oh what a pleasant couple of hours a week!

I strongly suggest you go elsewhere. I wish that I had.

it's awesome ...only for 2 years

    • Written by Eden S from Seosan

i bought this keyboard 2 years ago and had enjoyed using it until the shift keys started not working. it has been confirmed that it is a hardware problem which needs some repairing or replacement.
i know keyboards can be expandable but only 2 years when the warranty is only 1 year long... it's not worth the money.
i have never dropped it or spilled any liquid on it so i couldn't be the reason why it's broken.
the replacement is over 130 pounds. now i'm only hoping for my other keyboard last longer than this...

Not bent, but very shallow angle and no means of changing the angle

    • Written by David M from Cambridge

Well, I guess I am one of the lucky ones that has a flat keyboard, but the angle is very shallow, and it cannot be changed. Presumably Apple knows better than I do what angle I want to type at. :)

And the keyboard travel is very short. I hope that I will get used to that, presumably it is part of the "Apple thin" philosophy that over-permeates everything they do...

    Bends in the middle

    • Written by Jeffrey C from Islington

I do love the actual face of the keyboard and all its functions, I used to have the keyboard without the numeric keypad but I much prefer having the keypad attached. But I agree with Tony, when you are typing the keyboard dips in the middle, so much so that the bottom of the keyboard gets all scratched.

And as many have mentioned, for a high expensive quality product I don't think it's good enough from Apple.

    Sticky Key

    • Written by Oliver H from London

Day one - one sticky key. The keys aren't robust, they're not doing their job and therefore I don't have confidence in the quality of the product so I've sent it back for a refund.

    They Bend, Avoid

    • Written by Tony D from Llanelli

The keyboard has unnecessary bend/flex in the middle and if pressed on the side of the frame bounce upwards. Had mine replaced. Same issue. Poorly made, especially at this price point.

    So far so good

    • Written by dominic T from London

Only got this today so it's early days.

    Cons:

    - Too expensive
    - Smaller tilt angle than the old one

    Pros:

    - Not bent
    - Nice feel to type
    - Does not require bluetooth to be enabled if you just want to use it liked a normal wired keyboard. This was the biggest unknown for me as it baffles me why people want to deal with wireless keyboard charging when this is for a desktop.

Hopefully it'll have a longer lifespan than the old wired fullscreen keyboards. Time will tell.

Excellent Keyboard - Top Feel & Quality

    • Written by Richard B from Cannock

I love this keyboard, having just bought it to replace a Logitech one I had for 6 years that has now finally broke down.

The previous reviews saying this keyboard is bent must have experienced the very first batch of these, which must have been a bad batch. This one is flat and perfect.

I would recommend this to any iMac owner.

    Great keyboard

    • Written by Thomas G from Banbury

I am a middle aged software developer and I use iMac a lot. Every single day. I've been using iMacs for about 10 years now. When I updated my current iMac in 2015 it came with the narrow Magic Keyboard and even though I tried to love it very hard it was too difficult for me to use. So I ended up using my old full sized keyboard. It's about the numeric keypad (but I use it as well) its more about PgUp, PgDown, the size and placement of cursor keys. When I realised that the full size Magic Keyboard is available I instantly wanted to get it, but I was not so sure after reading so many negative reviews. Perhaps Apple has reinforced the keyboard or I was more lucky, but mine works perfectly! After a few days I get used to the slightly different angle and I can use it forgetting that this is a new model. Now, two months later I decided to write a review, to help those who worry that the keyboard bends easily. It's not. It declutters my desk a bit because I don't have the cable, it makes one USB port free – important when you have many testing devices connected. It's responsive, I can wake up my iMac just by pressing the space in the morning and the key typing feel is great. I can recommend it without reservation.

Great keyboard but they are bent

    • Written by Lee W from East Renfrewshire

Could have lost one star for being bent, I have purchased three of these in total and each has a differing degree of bend in them. I am sure it is either warm or cold storage causing it.

The bend is in the aluminium, this actually means it is quite easy to lay the keyboard down and see where it is high then apply some light pressure to bend it back into either a level position or one that suits the desk it is on. We use them on natural solid oak desks which are by design not perfectly level. So it is handy that you can bend them slightly to suit.

I know its a pain to get a bent keyboard, however, it does appear nothing more than the metal twisting in storage and for me at least it was easily sorted very quickly.

    Broken

    • Written by Alex H from Altrincham

I was given it as a birthday present. I loved it. However after 4 weeks of using it. It started to bend. The bend has gotten worse and worse. Now this is very unfortunate, as when I went to the apple store, located in the Trafford Centre it could not be fixed. I also can't get a refund as it was a gift from a relative who is no longer with us so we do not have the receipt. The keyboard itself is fantastic and easy to use, i fully recommend it, if the bend does not occur. I do tho love all of apple's products.

    Perfect

    • Written by Nick L from Henlow

I never have an issue with this keyboard. Mine isn't bowed, but I have seen ones that are, but really, it makes no difference at all, it still works flawlessly. People just love to moan.

Bad design leads to warped keyboard - not worthy of the apple brand

    • Written by n P from Thalwil

After a relatively short amount of time, my keyboard warped which meant on a glass table the thing would spin back and forth

Returned it to the apple store where, from entering the shop to leaving with a replacement, took 80 mins!

Not Bent, but still with flaws

    • Written by Thomas C from Slough

Would have been five stars if it didn't have the same delay on the Caps Lock key that my other Magic Keyboard also had.

It worked perfectly as a wired keyboard but then developed the 'feature' after I had synced it with my Mac. This is really annoying, and slows down my typing speed massively as I inevitably have to go back and correct letters which appear as lower case but should be upper case!

    Not Bent!

    • Written by Christopher B from CHIPPENHAM

I was going to buy this keyboard in November -I'd always wanted it since it was announced. I decided not to because of the many negative reviews concerning bowing. The device then became unavailable - everywhere - for a few weeks. I suspect that Apple were working to correct the issue. The keyboard came back into stock again in mid-Dec 2017 and I bought it. Just one example, I know, but this copy is perfect - no issues at all. Dropped a star because the price is nuts. I'll report back if any bending issues materialise.

    Bent - BUT EASILY FIXED!

    • Written by Stuart R from Troon

Mine arrived bent along with lots of others by the looks of it - I hadn't read all these reviews at the time and couldn't be bothered to return it so put it over my knee and applied light pressure to either end; now fixed, doesn't rock, sits flat and works perfectly!

Obviously this shouldn't be necessary with such a premium priced product but nevertheless it worked and saved me a 70 mile round trip to the Apple Store!

    Great functionality but badly bowed

    • Written by Chris B from Droitwich

Shame and a disappointment when you spend £130.00 on a keyboard to find that it is badly bowed. It works great but one does not expect to have quality issues in this price bracket. I would return it for an exchange but suspect that this is how they all are judging by the percentage of reviews detailing this fault.

    Brilliant Keyboard for Video/Audio work

    • Written by Liam M from Wigan

I'm not the biggest fan of typing on this keyboard, but I got it for use with my MacBook Pro 2017 15" for doing work in Cubase because it uses a lot of keys in the Num Pad, and these keys are brilliant for doing shortcuts on due to the short travel, so it's doing brilliant for what I got it for and I'm really happy with it, but I'm not yet up to speed on it when typing.
If you're already used to Apple keyboards then it'll surely do you fine, but might be best to get a different keyboard if you're not if you just wanna type on this.

    Very smooth keyboard

    • Written by Peter H from Near Tenby

Nice key operation and big improvement over standard keyboard without the numbers section.

Previous reviews mentioned keyboard was not flat and curved at the edges. Have to agree with this criticism. Mine was slightly curved and could be 'rocked' from end to end when on a flat surface. Took the bull by the horns and applied gentle twisting action at each end of the board and this has cured the problem. Keyboard now sits neatly and flat on my desktop.

Word of warning for anyone else trying this - be very careful how much pressure you apply when twisting the ends. Better to do it in very gradual stages to avoid breaking totally. Do it properly though and the problem can be solved without having to travel back to your nearest store (in my case 30 miles each way) to end up possibly with a new keyboard that may have the same problem.

Other than that point the keyboard is excellent piece of kit
