    Ok except for encryption

    I have been trying for six weeks to get an encrypted backup to work with no success. I have been working with thier customer support, who are very fast and responsive, but to no avail. The problem is it just will not restore from an encrypted backup. If you want to use it for non-encrypted purpses it works fine.

    Nice Product and Great Support

    I will echo the comments of those below. The product just works. With Time Machine on the Macs it is easy to take backups for granted. but hardware still fails. With more and more of our lives stored digitally, do you really want to lose those baby pictures or that sound file of your grandfather telling the family stories? Maybe you can get it back with Time Machine, but an photographer/film maker friend spent almost a week with Apple on the phone recapturing his business works and files over the past ten years. Why not have a external drive and at least a weekly backup? Most of us can lose a week of files (or find them with TM) but years?

    And these guys spend enough time on the phone to solve the problem not just "take two reboots and call me in the morning."

    Bugs, bugs and more bugs

    I had very little luck with this app. The backup schedules disappear or become damaged, source and destination volumes/folders disappear and have to be reset every few backups, can't save new scripts most of the time (save script is grayed out), I have to duplicate existing scripts and "save as", can't make "do a full scan" option stick, it would often miss files, often when I tried to re-add a destination after it disappeared it says that the source was already used do I want to read the information? Whether I click yes or no it doesn't add the source, I have to remove the .indeligible (or whatever that's called) using the terminal, then I can re-add the destination. Useless logs on top of that. Really weird GUI and options. After two backup scripts disappeared from the list yesterday I got fed up and I've gone back to Retrospect Express (I wanted a native app and the ability to delete oldest backups). Hopefully Retrospect X will address those. Wasted 60 bucks...

    Works Great

    I was looking for a simple, but effective way to backup my User Folder to an external drive. This product does the trick with no issues.
    I also use it to backup various project folders to other external drives, and it works great.
    I have been very pleased with this Software.

    Excellent support

    I believe the true test of a product is not only how well it works but how well it is supported when something goes wrong.

    I created an issue by deleteing my cache using mackeeper to allegedly clean up my system. Anyway it broke databackup.

    Prosoft support was very responsive and had the issue diagnosed and resolved as soon as I provided them with the information they required.

    Data Backup 3 and support

    I chose Data Backup 3 out of frustration with Synchronise Pro X. While it doesn't have all the customisation features, it does what it does do very well, and that is to backup my data without me having to worry about it.

    I quickly encountered a problem with copying to an external drive attached to another iMac on my home network. It would copy all files every time rather than copy only the files which had changed. With more than a little trepidation, I contacted ProSoft support. They were excellent. After a couple of emails, my problem was solved.

    I wish all companies had support organisations that worked this well to support their customers.

    Great Backup Software

    I purchased my Max a couple of years ago. I tried using Time Machine for backups but had nothing but trouble with no help from local Mac stores. I found a review of Data Backup 3 at Macworld. I tried it and it works great! It has an easy to use interface and the support is fast and helpful.

    Prosoft Data Backup & support

    The Prosoft Data Backup 3 is an excellent product. It does what it is suppose to do, and more. Their product Drive Genius is also very good as a disk diagnostic and repair tool. But their customer service is the best feature of all. I had a bad, bad disk failure. I E-mailed them when not knowing i thought there was a chance it may be related to a ProSoft product. Recrived a prompt reply that enabled to determine that I had an obscure hardware problem, not a software or app. problem. When desperate Prosoft engineering certainly helped me out of a hole.

    Good Product Great Support

    Data Backup v. 3 has performed quite well as did its predecessor v. 2. I have been using Data Backup prior to Time Machine and saw no reason to stop after reviewing the capabilities of each. But the real difference in most of back up software is the support. ProSoft support service is among the best. After six years of using both Data Backup and Drive Genius I have found their support timely and thorough. The support personnel stay with you until the problem is solved.

    So there may be cheaper applications out there to accomplish the same thing that Data Backup does but I will guarantee that when you really need to retrieve the backup or need a special backup you will wish you had bought from ProSoft since you are unlikely to get any support from any other vendor.

    Works fine for me, and excellent customer service

    I bought an external disk drive for backing up our Macs, and it came with Data Backup 2.1. Since this was before Apple's Time Machine software, I started using DB and found it entirely satisfactory. I use it regularly, and before every trip with my laptop. I had a laptop HD failure, and restore of my stuff after replacement and OS X re-install was perfect. I like the availability, but not the necessity, of detailed information.

    Recently DB started Initializing but then shut down. Software does not wear out due to use, but to changes in its environment. To see what the problem was, I contacted customer service at Prosoft Engineering. Michael responded with instructions to uninstall and reinstall. He added stuff that had to be done in addition to using the Uninstall option on the initial window. I think this should be, if possible, incorporated into the one-click process. In any case that did not work, so I sent back the relevant lines from /var/log/system.log.

    Michael, to his credit, recognized that I was knowledgeable about Unix-based computing, and the level of our discussion was adjusted. He ultimately concluded that a Java update had made version 2.1 no longer operable. They are a small company and do not maintain over-mature products. He pointed me to a download of the latest Beta version of DB 3.

    I installed that, everything worked dandy. So I got a good deal on a DB 3 product upgrade, and all is well. Great customer service.

    Good product with GREAT tech support.

    ProSoft Data Backup 3 works very well for me, especially after I contacted tech support by phone, and asked them to help set up a clone backup that would run automatically, each time I connected my external hard drive. Their help was thorough, unhurried and amazingly educational. They also sent a follow up email with the instructions I had been given over the phone. Impressive!

    Technical Support: ProSoft Data Backup 3

    I received this program on a cd with purchase of an OWC on the go 500GB external drive. Installation went without a hitch and I backed up the internal drive successfully. However, Restore would not work. I called Prosoft's technical support service and worked with Michael. Though it must not be easy to help someone who is not really computer savvy, I was patiently guided step by step. For the experts out there, Prosoft is working on why 3.1.1 - 9 would not restore on a mac powerbook G4 with OS 10.5.8 (leopard). For me, it was great to be in contact with another being with a native command of English and a good ear.

    a must have

    It took me 15 yrs to finally set a back up system after almost losing 500GB of invaluable movies and pictures. After recovering everything with the only program which could do the trick "DATA RESCUE" from prosoft, I started to try out every back up programs on the market that I could download for free for a trial period.
    DATA BACK UP 3 was from far the best and easiest software to use.
    A MUST HAVE !!!!!!!!!

    Excellent Backup Utility

    I have used this prodcut for a number of years and it has become one of my most trusted utilities for preserving my data. Version 3.X did have some issues with Snow Leopard but they seem to have resolved most of them.

    I had a couple of issues with 'executor" in the past and both time John (support heroe) provided resolution. Support is excellent, timely, and very professional.

    Excellent Tech Support!

    I recently received a copy of Data Backup 3 with my new Guardian Maximus Raid, and initially I was having a problem scheduling backups with the software. I emailed tech support and received a link to a newer version of the software from Michael, who was extremely helpful. The new version works well, and it's a good feeling to know that your backups are up to date! I really like the folder synchronization features too, that's missing in a lot of similar software.

    FileVault Backups

    I highly recommend Data Backup as your backup application. I use a FileVault account and no other backup software was able to make a nightly backup of my boot drive while I was running from my FileVault account. Only Data Backup was able to do that. I had to log out of my FileVault account if I wanted to make a nightly backup with the other backup applications.

    I tested Data Backup for a month to ensure that every new file I added to my FileVault account was being encrypted on the backup drive and Data Backup did not fail to keep every new file I placed in any area of my FileVault account in the encrypted sparseimage on the backup drive.

    Data Backup was the first application to allow you to backup your FileVault account while you are running from it, and it was able to do that long before any of the other backup apps were capable of doing that, so Data Backup is far ahead of everyone else.

    The support I received was also excellent. There were some things I didn't understand but once they were explained to me everything fell into place.

    Lont Time User

    I've used Prosoft Data Backup for many years and I am now on version 3.1 for Mac. I use this backup up system because it is very flexible in allowing me to set up customized backups. I back up some files as simple copies, I synchronize other files between my iMac and iBook, and with certain files I prefer to use version backups and Data Backup allows me to do all of this very in a very simple and elegant way. Lately, I had a technical issue with my Data Backup software and I sent support an email at the end of my work day and the next morning I received a very complete answer to my fix and it worked. I have other backup programs, but I will continue to use Data Backup as my mainstay.

    Awesome Product AND Support!!!

    I have been using Data Backup 3 for some time now. I have found it very easy to use and it has been a tremendous blessing several times over the past few years.

    I had an internal hard drive fail on me 2 times and Data Backup was there to keep me up and running. I use the clone back up every night and get an up to date backup that is bootable. If I ever lose my computer hard drive - my work doesn't miss a beat as I can boot up immediately from my external drive and keep working!

    I have contacted support over the past several years with a question or two. I have always had very timely support and details to my questions that gave me the answers that I needed instantly.

    I have found them to be fast - friendly and very reliable!

    Excellent product and excellent support!
